Chapter 71 - Hold My Hand

The rhythmic, deliberate clack of footsteps echoed across the polished marble of the Grand Concourse.

Kael walked out from the shadows of the stalled maglev train, bathed in the hellish, apocalyptic orange light spilling through the sheared terminal wall. He did not rush. He did not adopt a combat stance. He simply walked toward them, his glowing white eyes completely devoid of the boyish innocence he had once possessed.

The air in the cavernous terminal instantly grew heavy. It wasn't just a drop in temperature; it was a suffocating, ambient pressure that pressed against Darian's lungs, triggering every deeply ingrained survival instinct he possessed. The sheer scale of the threat radiating from the boy was unlike anything Darian had ever encountered. It felt ancient, bottomless, and unspeakably violent.

Darian instinctively stepped in front of Lyra, his body shielding hers.

"Lyra," Darian said quietly, his voice tightly coiled, never taking his eyes off the approaching figure. "Stay behind me. Do not move."

Darian studied the boy. The pale, exhausted face framed by the pooling black collar of the symbiote. The messy hair. The athletic build. Beneath the horrifying aura, there was something deeply, undeniably familiar about him. A ghost from a nightmare Darian had barely survived.

Confused, Darian's brow furrowed. He took a cautious half-step forward, his hands empty.

"Who are you...?" Darian asked.

He didn't even get to finish the sentence.

Kael instantly closed the fifty-yard distance. There was no dramatic wind-up. No blur of kinetic energy or explosive charge. It was a terrifying, frictionless deletion of space. One microsecond Kael was across the terminal; the next, he was standing directly inside Darian's guard.

Kael drove his bare fist directly into Darian's face.

The impact completely overwhelmed Darian's perception. There was no pain—only a deafening, skull-fracturing thunderclap, followed by an immediate plunge into sensory static. The sheer, impossible kinetic force lifted Darian entirely off his feet. He was launched backward through the air like a discarded ragdoll, flying over twenty yards before crashing violently into a marble transit pillar.

The thick stone cracked beneath his spine. Darian collapsed to the floor in a heap of tangled limbs, entirely paralyzed by the shockwave of the blow. The world spun in a nauseating blur. A high-pitched ringing drowned out the howling winds of the dying planet.

"Darian!" Lyra screamed, her voice muffled through the ringing in his ears.

Darian choked on a mouthful of hot blood, desperately trying to force his arms to push him up. His vision swam. Through the haze, he saw Kael walking toward him again. Slowly. Purposefully.

Kael didn't look like a victorious warrior. He looked like a victim who had finally cornered his abuser.

"You don't even know, do you?" Kael said. His voice was no longer the distorted, demonic shriek he had used against the POND squad. It was terrifyingly calm—a quiet, human hatred that had fermented in the absolute dark.

Kael reached down, grabbed Darian by the front of his coat, and hauled him effortlessly to his feet, only to instantly drive a knee directly into Darian's abdomen.

Three ribs shattered like dry twigs. Darian violently expelled all the air in his lungs, his eyes rolling back as he slumped against Kael's grip.

"You pushed me in that prison," Kael whispered, his words bleeding out naturally between strikes. He dropped Darian, only to deliver a devastating backhand across Darian's jaw, sending him crashing back onto the glass-strewn floor. "Because of you, the mission failed."

Darian gasped, his hands clawing at the slick marble. His mind was violently scrambled, struggling to process the accusations through the concussive trauma. Prison?

"If you hadn't interfered, we would have sealed the Expanse," Kael said, taking a slow step toward the bleeding boy. "Instructor Jax would be alive. Boro, Deja, Toben, they would be alive..." Kael's voice hitched, a raw, human agony bleeding through the demonic distortion. "They all died because of you. I burned from the inside out, alone, while you walked away."

While coughing up a thick mixture of blood and saliva, Darian's blurry eyes locked onto the boy's face. The memories violently stitched themselves together. The grinding stone of the Liuli Expanse. The desperate fight on the edge of the chasm. The cadet he had struck to save his own life.

Darian's breath hitched. "Kael...?"

It was impossible. The boy he remembered should not be alive. He had fallen into the lightless core of the planet. He should have been dead. He should not have become this walking, apocalyptic nightmare.

As the dawning, horrified realization washed over Darian's bruised face, Kael stopped. The black, liquid symbiote pooling around his collar writhed, smoothly retracting further down his neck, peeling away the final remnants of his monstrous disguise. He revealed himself completely. Just a boy, staring down the architect of his suffering.

"You took my family from me," Kael stated, the raw, emotional weight of the words hanging heavy in the freezing air. "But the Doctor found me in the dark. He pulled me out of the ash and gave me a second chance. Not to live peacefully... but to make sure you pay for every single person you stole from me."

Without another word, Kael brought his boot down on Darian's shoulder. Bone snapped.

Darian roared in agony, his emerald Essence violently flaring to life. The green light surged around his shattered shoulder, desperately trying to knit the bone back together. But he couldn't even mount a defense. Every time Darian tried to push himself up, Kael delivered another devastating, hyper-pressurized strike.

A kick to the spine. A heel to the ribs. A crushing stomp to the knee.

Darian was completely, utterly overwhelmed. His world dissolved into a cyclical nightmare of breaking bone and suffocating pain.

"Stop!" Lyra screamed.

"Lyra... stay back!" Darian gurgled, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the marble as he desperately tried to shield his head from another blow. "Don't... interfere!"

Lyra ignored him. She didn't just run and beg; she grabbed a heavy, jagged shard of shattered marble from the debris. Sprinting across the concourse, she threw herself directly between the monster and the broken boy.

"Leave him alone!" Lyra screamed, swinging the heavy stone with all her might at Kael's head.

The stone shattered completely uselessly against his black carapace. Kael didn't even flinch. He simply flicked his wrist, casually backhanding her. It wasn't a lethal blow, but the sheer, dismissive kinetic force sent Lyra flying backward. She crashed hard onto the glass-strewn floor, her breath leaving her in a painful gasp.

Kael lowered his hand, pausing his assault on Darian. Slowly, Kael turned his head. He looked down at the girl sprawled on the floor. He studied her dirt-streaked, tear-stained face. He noted the dark, expensive streetwear hiding beneath the ash.

"I know that face," Kael said, his glowing white eyes narrowing as the memory clicked into place. He pointed a black, bladed finger at her. "I saw your face broadcast on the fifty-story holograms across the entire burning city. The Spero girl."

Kael slowly turned his head back to Darian. He looked at the broken, bleeding boy on the floor. He saw the way Darian's terrified, bloodshot eyes were fixed not on Kael, but entirely on Lyra. He saw the sheer, unadulterated panic in Darian's posture.

A quiet, hollow laugh escaped Kael's lips. It wasn't a sound of amusement. It was the terrifying, chilling sound of a predator discovering the absolute most agonizing way to break its prey.

"Oh... I see it now," Kael said, his synthetic voice dropping into a cruel, echoing whisper. "You care for her."

Kael looked back at Lyra, the black symbiote rippling violently across his shoulders. "Thank you, Darian. I didn't know how I was going to make you feel the exact same despair I felt falling into the dark. But now... I understand perfectly. This is how I break you."

Darian's heart stopped. He saw the shift in Kael's posture. He instantly realized what Kael intended to do.

Despite barely remaining conscious, a primal, terrified surge of adrenaline flooded Darian's veins.

"Lyra, run!" Darian screamed, his voice tearing his throat. "RUN!"

The moment she scrambled to her feet and turned toward the concourse exit—

Kael vanished.

Darian didn't think. He threw himself forward, launching his broken, bleeding body directly into the empty space where Kael's trajectory would intersect with Lyra. He knew he could not win. He knew he could not even match Kael's speed. But he could become a wall of flesh.

He collided with Kael mid-air, wrapping his arms around the boy's waist, desperately trying to drag him down.

It was the worst mistake Darian could have made.

Kael didn't just break the grapple; he completely dismantled Darian. Kael slammed his elbow down into the center of Darian's back. The kinetic force ruptured Darian's kidneys and fractured two vertebrae.

Darian collapsed, but Kael grabbed him by the throat, hoisting him into the air, and began systematically destroying him.

A heavy, pressurized punch shattered Darian's sternum. Another fractured his orbital bone, sending a blinding spray of blood across Kael's pale face. Darian's emerald Essence flared in a blinding, desperate panic.

But the healing was no longer a miracle; it was a torture device.

As Kael pulverized Darian's ribs, the Essence aggressively forced the jagged bone fragments back into place. It felt like his own body was tearing its nervous system apart trying to survive. Darian screamed—a raw, agonizing, throat-shredding sound that echoed horribly through the ruined terminal.

Kael completely ignored the screams. Every time the green light successfully knitted a bone together, Kael intentionally broke it again.

He shattered Darian's right arm. The Essence burned like acid, fusing the bone. Kael immediately snapped the elbow backward.

Internal bleeding pooled in Darian's lungs. He choked, suffocating on his own blood, his glowing green flesh desperately trying to repair the catastrophic organ damage while Kael continuously pounded his torso. The regenerative ability grew slower. The brilliant emerald light began to flicker, dimming as Darian's Essence reserves were completely, violently depleted. Every subsequent heal took longer, burning hotter and hurting infinitely worse, until Darian's body was a shuddering, convulsing wreck.

Eventually, Darian could not even stand.

Kael dropped him. Darian hit the floor like a sack of wet meat. He was little more than a broken body that simply refused to die. His limbs twitched, his breathing a shallow, wet rattle.

Kael didn't finish him. He wanted Darian to witness what came next. Kael intentionally kept him conscious, stepping over the broken boy and walking toward the terrified girl trapped at the edge of the terminal.

"No..." Darian gurgled, his fingers weakly scraping against the polished marble. "No... please..."

Lyra backed away, her eyes wide with absolute terror, until her heels hit the jagged edge of the sheared wall. The howling wind whipped at her cloak.

Kael reached her. He didn't speak. He reached out, grabbed her by the collar, and violently threw her back toward the center of the terminal. Lyra hit the floor hard, sliding across the shattered glass. Before she could stand, Kael was standing over her.

He didn't strike her to kill her. He struck her to make Darian suffer.

Kael delivered a crushing kick to Lyra's side. She let out a piercing, shattered cry as her ribs fractured. She collapsed, curling into a tight ball, completely incapacitated by the agonizing pain.

"LYRA!" Darian screamed, his voice breaking into a pathetic, helpless sob.

Darian desperately tried to crawl toward her. His body completely refused to obey. His legs were useless, his right arm shattered. He dragged himself forward with his one functioning, blood-soaked hand, leaving a thick, dark smear across the pristine marble. Every inch was an eternity of agony.

"Lyra..." Darian wept, tears cutting clean lines through the blood masking his face.

Lyra heard him. Despite the agonizing pain in her side, despite the absolute terror, she opened her eyes. She saw Darian, broken and bleeding out, desperately dragging himself toward her.

She reached out with a trembling hand, her breath catching in her throat, and began to crawl toward him as well.

Both were crying. Both were entirely exhausted. The universe had violently stripped away their defenses, their plans, and their hopes, leaving them with absolutely nothing but each other. Neither could save the other. They were just two terrified teenagers bleeding out on the floor of a dying world.

Kael stood in the center of the terminal, watching them.

He watched the agonizingly slow, desperate crawl. He watched the tears, the blood, the sheer, helpless devastation radiating from Darian.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, their hands met.

Darian's trembling, blood-soaked fingers intertwined with Lyra's pale, cold hand. They gripped each other with the absolute, desperate finality of two people who believed these were their very last moments.

"Darian..." Lyra whispered, a weak, shattered sound barely carrying over the howling wind. She squeezed his broken hand, tears spilling onto the glass. "I'm here... I'm right here."

Darian pressed his forehead against the cold marble, weeping quietly. "I'm sorry," he choked out, his voice completely broken. "Lyra, I'm so sorry..."

Kael watched the emotional climax unfold. He looked at the broken boy sobbing on the floor, clinging to the ruined girl.

The suffocating, toxic hatred in Kael's chest finally felt satisfied. He had taken everything. He turned his back on them.

"Enjoy the dark, Darian."

The black symbiote surged upward, instantly sealing his pale face beneath the featureless, terrifying mask. He walked toward the dark concourse, his footsteps echoing softly before fading into the ambient roar of the storm, leaving them to die from their catastrophic injuries.

The terminal fell silent, save for the howling wind.

Darian and Lyra lay together on the cold, glass-strewn marble, barely conscious, their weak breaths mixing in the freezing air. They didn't cry out for help anymore. They simply lay in the ruins, holding hands, as the burning, apocalyptic remains of New Aether glowed violently beyond the shattered wall.
