Chapter 67 - One Arm Still Raised

Ash settled over the ruined intersection. The planet's roaring winds dulled, swallowed by the suffocating tension radiating from the street. There was no explosive collision. There was only stillness.

Kael stood amidst the shattered concrete, the pitch-black symbiote rippling across his face. His glowing white eyes locked entirely on the lone POND cadet twenty yards away.

Zeri perched on a collapsed transit station roof to the left. Down the street, Captain Halden anchored a hard-light dome over the civilian evacuation stairs. Kael ignored them. In his reality, only Ravion existed.

For a long, agonizing moment, the battlefield was allowed to breathe.

"Tell me where Darian is," Kael said. His voice was a chilling synthesis of a desperate boy and synthetic distortion.

Ravion stood perfectly still, golden eyes unblinking behind his cracked visor, his unignited plasma spear at his side. "I can't do that, Kael."

The black mass around Kael's jaw flexed. "Then I'll drag it out of you."

Without breaking eye contact with Kael, Ravion tapped his comms. "Zeri, stay back. Keep your distance."

"Relax, Rav," Zeri fired back smoothly, the holo blasters near her shoulders humming with energy. "You just try not to trip."

Kael attacked.

He didn't roar or unleash a chaotic barrage of monstrous blades. He fought exactly like the elite cadet he had been, his symbiote amplifying his physical capabilities without replacing his discipline. He closed the distance with a blinding slip-step.

Ravion's spear ignited with a hum, the superheated purple blade snapping up to guard just as Kael arrived.

Kael slipped inside the spear's effective range, treating Ravion's defense like a kinetic puzzle. He parried the heavy star-metal shaft with a sharp clack of his forearm, transitioning seamlessly into a hyper-efficient close-quarters combination: jab, cross, ascending elbow.

Ravion didn't retreat. He used the length of his spear like a quarterstaff, weaving a pristine defense born of years of combat drills. He deflected the jab, slipped the cross, and caught the elbow on his reinforced bracer.

The impacts rattled Ravion's bones, but his footwork remained absolute. As Kael stepped in for a grappling throw, Ravion reversed his grip, driving the spear butt toward Kael's knee to break his foundation. Kael checked the strike with his shin, smoothly pivoting away to reset his stance.

It was a breathtaking, high-speed martial duel. Every exchange was earned. But Kael was learning.

He absorbed Ravion's rhythm, noting how the cadet favored his left side to compensate for the spear's length, relying on rigid defensive spheres. To break it, Kael needed to force a commitment.

Feinting a low sweep, Kael baited Ravion into dropping his guard a fraction of an inch. The moment Ravion anchored his footing, Kael shifted his weight upward. He slipped entirely past the star-metal shaft, exploiting the microsecond delay, and delivered a pressurized hook directly into Ravion's ribs.

The impact was devastating.

Ravion launched backward, hitting the asphalt hard and skidding ten feet as the breath was driven from his lungs. Kael lowered his fist to follow up, but a flicker of genuine surprise crossed his white eyes.

Ravion was already back up.

The cadet swayed slightly, a thin line of blood trickling from his lip, but his stance had snapped back into a flawless guard. The star-metal plating of his ribs was severely dented, yet his elite conditioning absorbed far more of the impact than an ordinary hunter could have survived.

Before Kael could press the advantage, the street lit up.

A blinding barrage of searing yellow plasma rained down from the slanted roof. Zeri's suppressive fire blanketed the exact space Kael was about to step into, pinning him down.

"Missed me!" Zeri yelled over the roar of plasma.

The pinpoint accuracy forced Kael to abandon his momentum. He dodged backward, diving behind the scorched chassis of a derelict Ares armored transport. For the first time since the fight began, Kael stopped.

His mind operated with cold, frantic tactical efficiency. Ravion was too disciplined to break quickly. Zeri commanded the elevation. Down the street, Halden was focused on shielding the civilians.

Kael deliberately turned toward the derelict transport. With a shriek of tearing metal, he drove a heavy kick directly into the base of the multi-ton vehicle. The sheer kinetic force sent the burning transport rocketing across the asphalt toward the civilian evacuation stairs.

"Captain!" Ravion warned.

Halden couldn't dodge. She threw her hex-gauntlet forward, forcefully expanding her hard-light dome to catch the vehicle. The transport slammed into the shield, the kinetic shockwave driving Halden to her knees. She grunted, physically pinning herself in place to hold the immense weight.

With Halden occupied, Kael blurred from cover. He didn't look at Ravion. He looked up.

He ripped a jagged slab of asphalt from the street and hurled it like a discus toward the transit station roof.

"Zeri, move!" Ravion barked.

Zeri dove sideways just as the concrete struck. The impact shattered her position entirely. The roof collapsed, sending Zeri tumbling violently through the air. She hit the street hard, rolling across the debris-strewn asphalt. The impact brutally reopened the catastrophic chest injuries she had sustained weeks prior. Dark blood rapidly soaked the front of her uniform. The hovering blasters flickered out, and she lay motionless in the rubble.

Kael stood in the center of the ruined intersection. His tactical objective was complete. Halden was trapped. Zeri was incapacitated. Ravion was completely isolated.

Kael slowly turned his featureless mask toward the lone cadet. The disciplined martial artist vanished. The frustration of the delay, amplified by the toxic impatience of the symbiote, boiled over.

"You're wasting my time," Kael hissed, his voice distorting into a demonic, layered shriek.

The symbiote along Kael's right forearm violently reshaped itself. The liquid mass hardened, elongating into a jagged, three-foot scythe blade. Tendrils whipped from his shoulders as his mass expanded.

He vanished.

Above, Ravion's instincts screamed.

Ravion threw himself backward just as Kael materialized in the air where Ravion's head had been a millisecond before. The entity descended, driving his bladed arm down with enough force to cleave a tank in half. Ravion rolled, the concrete exploding into shrapnel as Kael's strike cratered the street.

Ravion survived purely through flawless technique, letting Kael's frenzied swings slide off the shaft of his spear. He ducked under a horizontal swipe, delivering a brutal plasma thrust into Kael's knee. As Kael stumbled, Ravion slammed his elbow into Kael's throat, following up with a sweeping kick that sent the entity crashing into a transit pillar.

But the damage didn't stick. The black sludge surged, instantly snapping Kael's knee back into place and sealing the plasma burn.

Kael bounced off the pillar, his free hand shooting forward. The fingers elongated into hardened, spear-like tendrils. Ravion twisted his torso, but one of the tendrils clipped his side, cleanly piercing the heavy star-metal plating of his ribs.

Ravion let out a sharp hiss of pain. He twisted the shaft of his spear, breaking the tendril's grip, and slammed the heavy butt of his weapon directly into Kael's mask.

The blow barely staggered the monster.

Kael realized Ravion was too entrenched in his Institute training to easily kill. The fastest way to break a POND cadet's defense was to attack what he was defending.

Kael turned his back on Ravion entirely. The symbiote along his right arm rapidly expanded, surging into a massive, ten-foot-long, serrated scythe blade. He didn't walk toward Ravion. He simply coiled his legs and launched himself across the street, aiming to cleave the grounded, bleeding Zeri in half.

Ravion didn't think. He saw a teammate about to die, and his unyielding protective instinct took over.

Burning every ounce of his remaining stamina, Ravion activated his boot thrusters to their absolute maximum, rocketing directly into the path of Kael's descending blade. He knew he couldn't block it. The sheer mass of the scythe would shatter his weapon and cleave right through them both.

He had to jam the arc with something solid enough to halt the momentum.

Ravion threw himself between Zeri and the monster. He deliberately turned his body, dropping his spear low into his right hand, and thrust his left arm up, clad in heavy Institute star-metal armor, directly into the path of the sweeping scythe.

He aimed to catch the blade in the reinforced crook of his elbow. He was wrong.

The symbiote blade carried the impossible, hyper-dense mass of a biological nightmare. The collision made no sound of clashing metal. It was a sickening, fluid shuck.

The serrated blade sheared through the heavy star-metal plating of Ravion's gauntlet as if it were wet paper. It cut cleanly through the reinforced synthetic undersuit, through the muscle, the bone, and out the other side.

Ravion's left arm was instantly severed, sheared off completely, three inches below the elbow.

The severed forearm spun away into the debris. A horrific spray of bright, arterial blood erupted from the stump, raining across the cracked asphalt.

The shock to Ravion's nervous system was apocalyptic. His vision flashed completely white. A terrifying, high-pitched ringing drowned out the hurricane winds.

But Ravion was POND.

He didn't scream. He didn't fall. He didn't drop his weapon.

The agonizing trauma triggered a massive dump of adrenaline. As Kael's blade passed through his arm, halting its momentum just inches from Zeri, Ravion used the monster's momentary over-extension. With his right hand, he rotated his plasma spear. Releasing a guttural, blood-choked roar of absolute defiance, he drove the superheated purple blade directly upward, burying it deep into the joint of Kael's right shoulder.

The plasma seared through the black carapace, finally biting deeply into the human flesh beneath.

Kael let out a distorted, agonizing shriek. The entity staggered backward, ripping himself off the plasma blade. Dark, boiling blood mixed with pitch-black sludge poured from the wound.

Ravion stood over Zeri.

He was swaying, his face pale as death. Blood poured from the severed stump of his left arm in a rhythmic, terrifying pulse. His golden eyes were dimming against crushing waves of unconsciousness. But his right hand gripped his spear with unyielding discipline. He kept the weapon pointed directly at Kael's chest.

He had lost the fight. He was missing an arm. He was seconds away from bleeding to death. But he hadn't taken a single step backward.

Kael clutched his burning shoulder. The symbiote hissed, frantically trying to seal the superheated wound. The entity looked at the severed arm on the ground, and then up at the swaying, one-armed boy who simply refused to die.

For a brief second, through the madness, the symbiote registered an obstacle that could not be broken by fear. Kael raised his uninjured left arm. The black mass reshaped, forming a massive, dense spike. He prepared to launch it directly through Ravion's heart.

Then—the symbiote stopped.

It wasn't a tactical hesitation. It was a violent, biological reaction. The pitch-black sludge suddenly spiked outward like iron filings drawn to a magnet. The ambient temperature in the street normalized. The crushing, suffocating pressure of Kael's Essence evaporated.

Kael froze completely. His arm, raised for the killing blow, hung suspended in the air.

Slowly, the black mask peeled back, dissolving to reveal the pale, exhausted face of the teenage boy beneath. His glowing white eyes widened, the pupils constricting violently as they stared past Ravion, past the dome, past the ruined skyline.

A specific, undeniable frequency of Essence echoed from somewhere deep within the collapsing city. The frantic, fragmented paranoia vanished. The obsession instantly found its true north.

Kael's arm slowly dropped to his side. He didn't look at Ravion, or the bleeding Zeri, or the massive shield dome holding back the wreckage. They had completely ceased to exist in his reality.

"...Found you," Kael whispered.

The words were hauntingly quiet. The absolute certainty of a predator locking onto its prey.

The symbiote slammed shut over his face, reforming the featureless black mask. Without another word, without a final glance, Kael's legs coiled.

BOOM.

The concrete beneath his feet pulverized into dust. The air pressure violently inverted as Kael launched himself into the burning sky. He vanished at hyper-sonic speed, leaving nothing behind but a localized shockwave that shattered the remaining glass in the intersection.

He was gone. The deafening howl of the unanchored winds rushed back in to fill the vacuum.

For a single second, Ravion stood there. He watched the sky where the nightmare had disappeared. His duty was fulfilled. The threat was gone.

His golden eyes rolled back.

Ravion collapsed. His spear clattered uselessly against the asphalt. He hit the ground heavily, his body completely limp, the severed stump of his arm pumping blood onto the cracked street.
