The heavy star-metal doors slammed shut with a sickening thud, severing the mutated crocodile's shrieks. The vintage repulsor-cruiser pitched violently backward as Merrick punched the accelerator, the inertial dampeners screaming in protest.
Darian was thrown hard against the passenger-side door, the raw knuckles of his recently healed hands slamming into the reinforced glass. Next to him in the cramped rear cabin, K, the young surviving guard, was hyperventilating, his eyes wide and unfocused beneath his tactical helmet.
Up front, Merrick fought the steering yoke, banking the massive obsidian cruiser off the edge of the abandoned summit park. In the front passenger seat, Caldwell, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, immediately turned around, his silver hand-cannon still drawn.
"Everyone sound off!" Caldwell barked, his voice tight but completely stripped of panic. "Lyra? Darian? K? Is anyone hurt? Any deep lacerations? Can everyone move?"
"I'm fine!" Lyra gasped from the middle rear seat, pressing herself back against the leather upholstery. She was trembling, her hands clamped tightly onto the armrests.
"Clear," Darian said, peeling himself off the door. His breath fogged the cold window.
Caldwell's eyes locked onto the young guard. "K! Look at me!"
K blinked rapidly, his chest heaving. "I... I'm okay, Captain. I'm in one piece. Rylan... it just tore through him like—"
"Focus," Caldwell snapped, cutting him off. "Rylan is gone. We are still here." He shifted his gaze to Darian. "Kid, you were POND, right? Get on your frequency. Call your people. Tell them we have a total containment breach and need immediate extraction."
Darian shook his head, his chest tight. "I can't. I don't have access anymore. I was expelled."
"Merrick, get us out of the upper atmosphere," Caldwell ordered, turning back to the windshield. "We need to reach the mid-strata grid."
"I'm trying, sir," Merrick said, his hands flying across the illuminated dash. "But the descent lanes are gone. The entire sector's traffic grid just went offline."
Darian looked out the window. The sky above them wasn't a sky anymore. It was a suffocating canopy of blinding, hellish orange. Massive fragments of the Zenith Shell—burning sections of the orbital ring the size of city blocks—were plummeting through the atmosphere. The sheer heat radiating from the falling megastructures turned the freezing high-altitude mist into scalding steam.
"What the hell is happening?" Lyra breathed, staring up in absolute horror. "Did the tether just fail? Is the whole station coming down?"
"Merrick, bank left! Now!" Caldwell roared.
A burning chunk of star-metal, trailing a tail of raw atmospheric fire, screamed past the cruiser's port side. The radiant heat instantly blistered the vintage vehicle's obsidian paint, filling the cabin with the sharp, toxic smell of melting polymer. The shockwave swatted the massive cruiser aside, sending them into a terrifying spin.
"Hold on!" Merrick yelled, his forearms straining as he manually overrode the thrusters, fighting the brutal crosswinds dragging behind the falling debris.
Below them, New Aether wasn't just burning; it was actively dying.
Merrick managed to level out the cruiser, plunging them into the deep, cavernous canyons of the commercial district. But salvation wasn't waiting for them below. The multi-lane highways were completely gridlocked, transformed into a sprawling graveyard of thousands of abandoned hover-cars sitting bumper-to-bumper.
The city had descended into an apocalyptic nightmare.
A sea of terrified citizens flooded the pedestrian walkways, trampling each other in a blind panic beneath the flickering magenta glow of failing holograms. Ares security forces, their formations entirely broken, were firing wildly into the shadows at heavily mutated civilians and crawling, parasitic roots.
POND was already there, but they were losing. Through the shattered windshield, Darian watched a heavily armored POND transport gunship drop a squad of elite hunters onto a collapsing transit rail. They didn't even have time to establish a perimeter. A tidal wave of infected civilians, their bodies twisted by bio-alchemical growths, surged over the barricades, swallowing the hunters in seconds. A massive, malformed creature with scythe-like limbs scaled the side of a burning skyscraper, violently ripping a POND crowd-control drone out of the air and tossing it into the stampeding crowds below.
"The main artery is totally blocked," Merrick said, violently swerving to avoid a plummeting, flaming news helicopter that crashed into the adjacent plaza. His voice was clipped and professional, though sweat poured down his face. "Taking us down to the industrial sub-levels. The automated turrets there might give us cover."
"Do it," Caldwell ordered, tracking a horrifying, multi-limbed beast tearing through a stalled transport bus below them. "Just keep us moving."
Lyra shook her head slowly, her eyes wide as she looked out the window at the distant epicenter of the city. "It won't matter."
"What do you mean?" Caldwell asked.
"Look," Lyra whispered.
Darian leaned forward. Miles away, the colossal Ares Corporation HQ was barely visible through the smoke and falling ash. The massive Strangler Fig had fully consumed the needle-like structure. Thick, pulsating red roots were bursting from the pavement blocks away from the epicenter.
"What is that thing?" Lyra asked, her voice trembling. "Is it... eating the building?"
"How is it growing that fast?" Darian muttered, watching the colossal canopy eclipse the burning sky. "Are those roots spreading through the grid? Is this an attack?"
As if answering his question, a massive section of the elevated highway ahead of them simply buckled. A colossal, dark-red root, glowing with sickly amber sap, erupted from the asphalt, shattering a reinforced concrete support pillar. An entire line of gridlocked hover-cars plummeted into the abyss below.
"Brace!" Merrick yelled, yanking the yoke hard to the right.
The cruiser violently swerved, scraping the side of a collapsing skyscraper. Sparks showered the windshield as they careened into a narrow, scaffolding-choked maintenance tunnel beneath the commercial strata, narrowly avoiding the sweeping arc of a collapsing construction crane. The roar of the dying city faded slightly, replaced by the terrifying screech of the cruiser's hull grinding against tight corners.
In the back seat, Darian finally caught his breath. He looked over at K. The young guard had taken off his helmet and was resting his head against the reinforced window.
"Hey," Darian said softly, checking on him. "You hanging in there?"
K let out a long, shaky exhale, rubbing his face with both hands. "Yeah," he breathed. "Yeah, I'm good. Just... adrenaline, you know? I really thought we were dead back there on the plaza."
"We made it," Darian reassured him.
K offered a weak nod, but then he frowned, bringing a hand up to massage his temple. "Whoa."
"What?" Lyra asked.
"Just... dizzy for a second," K mumbled, blinking rapidly as if trying to clear his vision. "Crazy head rush."
He dropped his hand. For a fraction of a second, he looked at Darian, his eyes wide and terribly confused.
Then, it happened.
There was no warning. No scream. K's jaw simply unhinged with a horrific, wet crack, dropping impossibly low onto his chest.
"Captain!" Darian roared, instantly throwing himself backward, pressing Lyra into the corner of the seat.
Caldwell whipped around, raising the hand-cannon.
It happened in the span of a second. In the claustrophobic confines of the rear cabin, K's transformation erupted with terrifying, explosive violence. His ribcage shattered outward.
Jagged, dark-red wooden spikes tore out of his torso. Two of the thick, thorny roots shot directly forward, impaling Caldwell through the back of the passenger seat. The captain screamed as the roots drove straight through his right shoulder, violently pinning him against the dashboard.
The hand-cannon fired wildly into the roof of the car, deafening in the enclosed space.
"Merrick! Get him off me!" Caldwell roared, blood pouring from his mouth.
The mutated guard let out a layered, synthetic shriek. His arms stretched with a sickening pop of dislocating joints, transforming into serrated, wooden mantis-scythes. Trapped in the tiny space, the creature lunged at Darian.
"Get back!" Darian yelled, throwing his arms up.
The brilliant, terrifying emerald light of his Essence flared to life. Darian drove his glowing fist upward, burying it into the underside of the creature's mangled jaw. The impact cracked the parasitic bark, but the beast didn't stagger. Instead, the dark-red roots inside the guard's ruined chest cavity lashed out, wrapping tightly around Darian's forearms. The amber sap instantly seared his skin like acid.
"Darian!" Lyra screamed, frantically pulling at the roots binding him, but there was nowhere to move.
"I can't... hold it!" Darian grunted, his boots planted against the back of K's seat for leverage, desperately trying to keep the snapping, splintered maw away from his face.
In the driver's seat, Merrick drew his sidearm with his right hand while trying to steer with his left. He fired two shots over his shoulder, blindly hitting the creature in its mutated shoulder, but the confined space made it impossible to aim without hitting Darian or Lyra.
"Captain, I need you to pull it back!" Merrick yelled, his eyes darting frantically between the tunnel ahead and the nightmare in the back seat.
Caldwell, bleeding heavily and losing consciousness, weakly gripped the roots impaling him, trying to pull himself free. The movement jerked the creature forward.
The mutated guard's scythe-like arm whipped around, violently smashing into the back of Merrick's seat.
The driver lost his grip on the yoke. The vintage cruiser banked wildly at maximum velocity. The headlights swept across the narrow tunnel walls, illuminating a massive, reinforced ferro-crete support pylon rushing toward them at two hundred miles an hour.
Darian looked past the snarling creature, seeing the pillar through the cracked windshield. There was no time to brake. No time to swerve.
"Brace—!"
The cruiser slammed into the pillar. Glass shattered into a million glittering diamonds as the chassis buckled entirely inward, plunging them into the screaming dark.
