Chapter 23 - Ash and Iron

-Thyra POV-

The air reeked of burning flesh and ash.

I hit the ground hard after the blast. It felt like my lungs were burning, ears ringing. Everything was spinning

A feeling I never wanted to feel again.

I reached for my spear which landed just above me. Using it to push myself onto my feet.

The ceiling is still covered in smoke. It looks like a snake slithering along the roof.

The laughter boomed through the wreckage again. Sick, broken laugh cutting through the fire.

Followed by words I can't make out.

The Rigger. A bastard I never thought I'd have to deal with again.

I drive my spear into the ground to swipe off the ash coating me, before ripping it from the ground again.

I bring the spear to a steady spin between my fingers.

I need to charge up some energy. No doubt his puppets are around here somewhere.

Rhovan should be close to me as well.

Thyra: "Rhovan!"

No answer.

I think we were closer to the centre than I was.

I turn towards where the centre should be. Though it's hard to see anything through the fire.

Until a voice cut through.

Rhovan: "Thyra! I'm here."

Relief hits me hard.

Thyra: "You good?"

Rhovan: "Just had to fend off some of those maniacs puppets but I'm fine."

Thyra: "Alive is enough for now."

Some posts dropped. The remains of the building were falling apart as we stood here chatting.

Thyra: "He's still here. So are Kareth and Aric. We need to save them."

Rhovan: "We can't reach each other. So stay close enough to hear me ok?"

Thyra: "Got it."

*BOOM*

Aric could be in danger. Kareth should have himself covered though.

I jolt my head to the side. Footsteps.

A puppet slowly walked towards me. A middle aged woman. Though now her mind was gone. Half her face burnt off and an arm missing

No time for hesitation.

My spear drove through her chest. Long enough to avoid the explosion.

I should be charged enough to use some lightning.

I can hear Rhovan fighting from just beyond this wall of fire.

Thyra: "Rhovan you still good? I can break down the wall."

Rhovan grunts back.

It's probably a good idea nonetheless.

I hold my spear out to the right. Channeling lightning through the handle to the tip.

I'll get rid of the wall with a single powerful swing.

I swing my arm over my chest. Forcing the spear clean through the wall.

*CRASH*

The wall comes tumbling down.

Rhovan is fighting a few of the puppets as I get in.

I drive my spear into the ground again. Channeling my power into the ground.

Debris raise off the floor. Charging for a brief second before launching forward into the puppets.

Rhovan: "Thanks Thyra."

I nod

We keep pushing through the hoard of puppets and fire. Going towards the direction of the explosions from before.

Rigger has always been like this. Using people like puppets. Like toys.

*BOOM*

Rhovan: "Thyra over there!"

Rhovan pointed out in front of us.

Aric was about to get hit point blank by an explosion.

No thoughts. Just movement.

I have to save him.

*BOOM*

No no no

The dust settled.

Wait.

How is Aric a few meters away from the blast?

He doesn't even seem phased…

Is this how he's been killing the puppets?

I walk over a burning beam. Swiping the fire away before it grabs ahold of my boots with my spear.

Thyra: "Aric!"

My eyes are wide. Rhovans probably are as well after witnessing that.

He just unlocked his thread. After only a week of training.

That's insane.

Rhovan and Aric were going back and forth. I didn't catch most of it.

I'm too focused on the fact that Aric is ok. And that we need to save Kareth still.

Despite that I tried to pretend to be engaged. Adding in a few words.

Another explosion came from down the hallway.

My eyes snap down the burning corridor towards the explosion.

The Rigger.

I take off into a dash down the hallway. Rhovan and Aric will follow.
