Chapter 21 - Chapter Twenty-One: The First Strike

Dawn broke with a pale silver light, the valley wrapped in mist. Yu Lan stood at the head of her expanded army, her newly forged weapon strapped to her back, its subtle hum of cultivation barely perceptible even to those closest to her.

Today was the day. Not just a skirmish, not just a warning — this was the first major offensive against the empire.

Bo Li rode beside her, eyes sharp, hand never far from the hilt of his sword. His protective instincts were on high alert. "Stay close to me," he murmured quietly. "I won't let anyone touch you."

Yu Lan's lips curved faintly. "I know. But remember — my strength is not only in defense. Timing and precision will protect all of us."

Bo Li's jaw tightened. She trusts me, yet she trusts herself even more. How can I not fall deeper into this…

Huo Yun observed from a nearby ridge, signaling troop movements and monitoring enemy patrols. Every detail of the offensive had been meticulously planned, yet he could not ignore the tension rising in him as he watched Bo Li's unwavering closeness to Yu Lan.

Always so near… always so ready. And she allows it. How am I supposed to remain calm?

He pressed the memory aside, focusing instead on strategy. The operation could not fail.

The imperial forces, unaware of the rebellion's true scale, marched confidently along a valley road. Yu Lan's army moved silently, shadows among the trees, poised for coordinated strikes.

At her signal, the first arrows flew — precise, disabling, and perfectly timed. The imperial vanguard faltered. Her troops struck in tandem, sweeping in with the speed and coordination of a single organism.

Yu Lan herself advanced, drawing her weapon. The lotus blade hummed faintly as her cultivation resonated with it, subtly enhancing its power. One swing disarmed two soldiers, another deflected a spear aimed at her army's flank. Every strike was deliberate, controlled, almost elegant.

Bo Li intercepted a charging officer who sought to flank her, throwing him back with ease while keeping her shielded. His chest heaved, pride and fear intermingling.

Huo Yun, from his vantage point, directed reserves, reinforcing weak points, and subtly shifting troops to counter imperial maneuvers. Yet he could not ignore the flutter of jealousy — Bo Li's closeness, his soft murmurs of concern, and the way Yu Lan's attention lingered ever so slightly.

In the imperial capital, the Emperor paced his chamber, golden robes brushing the marble. Advisors reported constantly.

"She has mobilized her forces with alarming efficiency," Long Tianwei said, his tone tense. "Northern patrols routed. Supply lines redirected. And rumors of… powers beyond ordinary human skill are spreading."

The Emperor's fingers tightened on the desk. "She is exiled. How is this possible? We humiliated her, cast her aside, and yet…"

He looked out the window toward the northern mountains, suspicion and fear tightening his chest. If she reaches the capital, all of our control, all of our prestige, will unravel. Yu Ya must be deployed… immediately.

Back in the valley, Yu Lan's army routed the imperial forces with precision. Civilians were kept safe, casualties minimal, and the movement of the enemy disrupted. Her blade hummed faintly with cultivation energy, allowing her to manipulate the battlefield without revealing the true extent of her power.

Bo Li stayed at her side through it all, deflecting, intercepting, and quietly marveling at her skill.

Huo Yun, directing reserves, felt a bitter tension — jealousy, admiration, and frustration all at once. He could not deny her brilliance, yet seeing Bo Li so close to her stung more than he would admit.

In the distance, Yu Ya's spies and agents reported the chaos. Her sharp eyes narrowed as she realized the full scale of Yu Lan's growing influence.

The exiled daughter has become more than we imagined… and the Emperor underestimates her. This time, she will not be stopped so easily.

As the sun set, Yu Lan stood atop a ridge overlooking the retreating imperial forces, her army regrouping below. The valley had been won today — a statement to the empire, a warning, and the first decisive action in her rebellion.

The lotus had bloomed fully. Its petals were sharp, lethal, and ready to strike deeper into the heart of the empire.

Bo Li's hand brushed hers briefly as he fell into step beside her. "We did it… thanks to you," he said softly.

Yu Lan's gaze met his, calm and resolute. "We did it together. And this is only the beginning."

Huo Yun, silently watching from a distance, clenched his fists. Loyalty and strategy remained his guiding principles, but his chest burned with a jealousy he could not suppress. She belongs to the rebellion… but why does my heart claim her too?

And somewhere in the imperial capital, the Emperor's eyes darkened, realizing the exiled girl he had dismissed was no longer a threat to be ignored — she was a storm approaching the throne.
