Chapter 10 - The Demon Accusation

The morning sun over the Bastion of Mourning was a pale, sickly thing. It struggled to pierce the dense, iron-colored clouds that always seemed to congregate over the Ironwood Fringe. For the inhabitants of the castle, the light brought no warmth. Instead, it revealed the grim reality of an occupied fortress. The Silverian Inquisitors were everywhere. They stood like statues of grey salt along the battlements, their silver masks reflecting the dull light with a cold, unforgiving glare.

Cian Valerius stood in the shadow of the great colonnade, his eyes fixed on the entrance to the guest wing. He had slept for only two hours, but his two soul cores were humming with a renewed, vibrant energy. The Level 5 Awakened rank felt significantly different from the lower levels. His senses were sharper, his movements more deliberate, and the world seemed to slow down whenever he focused his intent.

[Rank: Awakened (Level 5)]

[Passive Gain: Teacher's Tax has increased Mana Density to 160% of standard.]

Through the Sovereign's Link, which still existed as a faint, subconscious hum in the back of his mind, he could feel the presence of the First Ten. They were back at their posts, disguised as ordinary, exhausted guards. But beneath their rusted armor, their mana was now silver and sharp. They were no longer sheep. They were wolves in sheep's clothing, waiting for his signal.

The heavy oak doors of the guest wing swung open. Baron Vane stepped out, his expression as cold as the mountain stone. He was not accompanied by his usual entourage. He walked alone, his heavy black cloak dragging slightly behind him. In his right hand, he held something wrapped in a piece of silk.

Cian's Akashic Scholar talent pinged a warning immediately.

[Threat Level: High]

[Visual Analysis: Baron Vane is radiating 'Suppressed Fury'.]

[Object Identified: Fragment of the Silent Talon's Shattered Dagger.]

Cian's heart did not skip a beat. He had anticipated this. No Saint-rank Auditor would lose an elite assassin without noticing. The "Silent Talon" had been Vane's shadow, and the shadow had been erased.

Vane did not go to the training grounds. He marched straight into the Great Hall, where Lord Alaric and the Imperial Overseer were sharing a tense breakfast. Cian followed at a distance, his head bowed, the perfect image of a lowly scribe carrying a fresh stack of reports.

"Alaric!" Vane's voice boomed as he entered the hall, shattering the quiet clink of silverware.

Lord Alaric stood up, his hand instinctively reaching for the hilt of his sword. The Imperial Overseer nearly choked on his wine, his eyes darting between the Baron and the Lord of the Bastion.

"Baron Vane," Alaric said, his voice wary. "You seem... disturbed."

Vane did not answer with words. He walked to the center of the long table and threw the silk-wrapped object onto the wood. The silk fell away, revealing the jagged, blackened fragments of the assassin's dagger. The metal was still stained with a faint, iridescent residue: the soul-eater poison.

"My personal shadow, a man who has served the Hegemony for twenty years, vanished last night," Vane said, his voice a low, dangerous hiss. "I found these shards in the Grey Weald this morning, less than a mile from your postern gate. There were signs of a struggle. A struggle involving a type of mana that does not belong to a human."

The Overseer stood up, his face turning ashen. "A struggle? Here? Baron, are you suggesting..."

"I am suggesting," Vane interrupted, his eyes locking onto Alaric's, "that House Valerius is harboring a demon. Or perhaps, someone here has made a pact with the Abyssal Reach to obtain a power they were never meant to have. The mana signature I detected at the site was chaotic, violet, and utterly monstrous."

The hall went deathly silent. Harboring a demon or making an Abyssal pact was the highest form of treason in the Silverian Hegemony. It was a charge that led not just to execution, but to the total erasure of a family name from all historical records.

"That is a lie!" Alaric roared, his Master-rank mana flaring. "My family has guarded this border for centuries! We have bled more than any house to keep the Abyss at bay! To suggest we would make a pact with the very thing that killed my wife is an insult I will not tolerate!"

Vane didn't flinch. He released his own Saint-rank pressure, a crushing weight that forced the Overseer back into his chair and made the stone floor beneath them groan.

"Your tolerance is irrelevant, Alaric," Vane said. "The evidence is here. Only a creature of the Abyss or a Monster-class hybrid could have shattered an Ascended-rank dagger with such raw, unrefined force. I will now conduct a 'Soul-Search' of every person in this Bastion, starting with your son."

Vane turned toward Cian, who was standing by the door. The Baron's eyes were like two grey suns, radiating a heat that promised to strip away every secret.

Cian knew he couldn't let the Soul-Search happen. Even with the Veil of the Void, a direct, aggressive Saint-rank probe would likely detect his second core. He had to pivot. He had to turn the "Monster" evidence into something else.

"My Lord," Cian said, his voice small and trembling, the perfect scholar in distress.

"Silence, boy!" Vane snapped.

"Please, my Lord," Cian continued, stepping into the center of the room. He looked at the shattered dagger on the table. "I... I think I know what that mana is. I saw it in a book. A very old book from the First Era."

Vane paused, his eyes narrowing. "You saw this in a book? Speak, scholar, but be careful with your words. Your life depends on the next sentence."

Cian approached the table, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and academic curiosity. He reached out a hand, as if to touch the blackened shards, then pulled it back as if afraid.

"This... this isn't demonic mana, my Lord," Cian said, his voice growing more confident as he 'analyzed' the fragments. "It is 'Over-Compressed Purity'. In the First Era, the Saints used to talk about the 'Aurelian Feedback'. When a soul with a certain frequency touches a corrupted object, the corruption doesn't just vanish. It shatters under the pressure of the purity."

Vane laughed, a dry, mocking sound. "Over-Compressed Purity? You are claiming that my assassin was killed by a saintly miracle?"

"Not a miracle, my Lord," Cian said, looking Vane directly in the eye. "A resonance. Remember the Aptitude Stone? It didn't just break. It exploded into gold and silver light. The scholars in the capital call it a 'Void Soul' error, but what if they are wrong? What if the Stone broke because it was being flooded with too much pure energy from the Bastion's foundation?"

Cian pointed to the blackened shards. "If a scout from the Abyss, or someone carrying Abyssal tools, was lurking near the Bastion, the latent energy from the Stone's destruction might have reacted with them. A 'Pulse of Purity' could have shattered that dagger and the man holding it."

"A ridiculous theory," Vane growled, but the Imperial Overseer looked thoughtful.

"Actually, Baron," the Overseer whispered, "there are records of 'Mana-Storms' occurring after the destruction of high-rank relics. If the boy is right, the energy from the Stone is still lingering in the air of the Weald."

"I can prove it," Cian said.

He looked at the Overseer's wine goblet, which was made of silver and inscribed with a minor protection rune.

"If I am truly a 'Void Soul', as you say, and if the energy of the First Saints is reacting through me, I should be able to 'Purify' even the most corrupted object."

Cian reached into his tunic and pulled out a small, blackened stone he had picked up in the Grey Weald. It was a 'Blight-Stone', a common object saturated with Abyssal Miasma. It radiated a faint, sickly green light.

"Watch," Cian said.

He placed the Blight-Stone on the table next to the shattered dagger. He closed his eyes.

[Divine Talent: Sovereign Tutor is Active.]

[Action: Linking with the 'Concept' of the Stone.]

[Technique: Primordial Heart-Core Compression.]

Cian didn't use his Monster core. He used his primary heart core, funneling the Supreme-rank Primordial Heart-Core Breath into the stone. But he didn't do it directly. He used the Akashic Scholar talent to "Filter" the mana, making it look like it was coming from the room itself, as if he were merely a conduit for the "latent energy" he had mentioned.

A soft, melodic hum began to fill the hall. The blackened stone began to vibrate. Suddenly, a brilliant, prismatic light erupted from Cian's hand, the exact same color as the explosion from the Aptitude Stone.

The green miasma within the Blight-Stone didn't just fade; it was burned away. The stone turned into a clear, translucent crystal, radiating a warmth that filled the entire hall. The Saint-rank pressure from Baron Vane was physically pushed back by the expanding light.

The Imperial Overseer fell to his knees, his eyes wide. "A... a Miracle of Purification! The Aurelian Feedback! The boy is not a demon, he is a 'Prism'!"

Vane stood frozen. He looked at the purified crystal, then at the shattered shards of the dagger. The "Monstrous" mana signature he had detected in the woods was gone, replaced by the overwhelming, saintly radiance of the Supreme-rank technique Cian had just performed.

[System Notification: Public Deception Successful.]

[Baron Vane's Suspicion: Decreased by 40%.]

[Imperial Overseer's Favor: Increased to 'Awe'.]

"You see, my Lord?" Cian said, his voice weak and trembling as he allowed the light to fade. He slumped over, looking exhausted. "I told you. The Stone breaking was not a sign of weakness. It was a sign that the old ways are no longer enough to contain the light of House Valerius."

Lord Alaric looked at his son, his face a mixture of shock and profound confusion. He knew his son was lying. He knew there was no such thing as a 'Prism Soul' in their family history. But he saw the results. He saw the Baron, a Saint-rank warrior, forced to retreat from a direct accusation.

Vane pulled his hand away from the table, his eyes narrowing into thin slits. He wasn't convinced, but he no longer had a legal basis for a 'Soul-Search'. To search a 'Prism' of the First Saints would be considered a sacrilege by the Hegemony's church.

"A Prism, is it?" Vane said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing whisper. "Very well, Cian Valerius. You have performed a miracle. But remember this: even the brightest light casts a shadow. I will find what is hiding in yours."

Vane turned and marched out of the hall, his black cloak billowing behind him. He didn't even look at the shattered shards of his assassin's dagger. They were useless now, evidence that had been "purified" into silence.

The Imperial Overseer scrambled to his feet, his hands shaking as he grabbed his quill. "I must write to the Capital immediately! A Prism Soul on the border! This changes everything! The audit must be re-categorized as a 'Sacred Observation'!"

As the Overseer and Alaric began to talk in hushed, frantic tones, Cian sat back in a chair, his breathing shallow.

[Teacher's Tax: 20 Knowledge Points gained from 'Instructing' the public on a fake history.]

[New Skill Unlocked: Veil of the Scholar.]

[Description: You can now permanently mask your Monster Core as a 'Sacred Relic Resonance'.]

That was too close, Cian thought, wiping the sweat from his brow. He knows I'm lying, but he can't prove it. Not yet.

He looked at the purified crystal on the table. It was a beautiful, empty thing. A lie made of light.

But it had bought him exactly what he needed: more time. The Baron was now wary of his "Sacred" status, which meant the audit would be less aggressive for the next forty eight hours.

Forty eight hours, Cian calculated. Enough time to take the First Ten into their first real battle. Enough time to show them how to kill an Inquisitor.

He stood up, the humble scholar once more, and picked up his inkwell. He had a legion to build, and the "Miracle" was only the first page of the new code he was writing for Oros.
