I held onto Caleb longer, and he did the same.
"I need to take care of some things at the office. I will be back before you know it," I promised him.
"Yes, Mum."
"If you hear anyone in the house, you know where to hide."
He nodded solemnly.
I had contingencies for days like this. The bunker I had built beneath the house was undetectable, even to the keen senses of werewolves.
I rose, leveling my gaze on the caretaker I had hired with very little notice.
"I will take good care of your son," the freckled woman named Tanya promised. "He is in safe hands."
I nodded, despite the ache in my chest. It was a mercy the press hadn't revealed Caleb's face in the news report; otherwise, I doubted anyone would be brave enough to babysit him.
Heading to the door, I was already calculating my next moves. The calculations didn't stop during the entire drive to Silverline.
