Chapter 98 - The Morning After

I woke to sunlight streaming through familiar windows.

For a moment—just a moment—I forgot everything. Forgot the war, the trials, the losses. Forgot Sarah's sacrifice, Theron's fall, the four worlds that would never rise again.

Then memory returned.

But so did something else. Warmth. Mei Lian beside me, still sleeping, the bond humming with peaceful dreams. Home. Real home.

I slipped out of bed quietly, letting her rest, and walked to the window.

The academy sprawled below—students hurrying to classes, professors striding importantly, the whole machine of education grinding forward as if nothing had changed.

But everything had changed.

We'd won. The war was over. The first immortal was... what? Redeemed? Trying? It would take time to understand.

For now, I just watched morning light spread across towers I'd known since childhood.

"You're brooding."

Mei Lian appeared behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist.

"Thinking. There's a difference."

She kissed my shoulder. "Same thing with you."

I laughed—quiet, real, alive.

"Maybe."

The Council

They gathered at midday—the ones who remained.

Darius, still limping, refusing to use a cane. Lyra, surrounded by screens even now, coordinating the impossible work of rebuilding. Vera, quiet as always, but with something new in her eyes. Theo and Mira, who'd traveled from their village for this.

And the gods—or some of them. Mira (our Mira) represented them, carrying messages from the others.

"Selene sends her regards," she reported. "She's at her mountain, healing in her own way. Theron and Solara are together—really together, for the first time in millennia. The others are returning to their domains, rebuilding their temples, reconnecting with worshippers."

"And Darian?" I asked.

"With Serena. They've asked for... time. To figure out who they are now. Together."

Cassian had stayed with them—not as servant, but as friend. The three of them, bound by centuries of pain and hope, trying to build something new.

I nodded. "Good. They deserve that chance."

Mira smiled. "You gave them that chance."

"We all did."

The Work

The days that followed were strange.

Not the rhythm of war—training, fighting, mourning. Something else. Peace. We weren't used to it.

Darius threw himself into training new soldiers—not for war, but for defense. "Someone has to protect what we built," he said. "Might as well be me."

Lyra coordinated rebuilding across a hundred worlds. Her screens multiplied, her hours lengthened, but she was happy. Purpose suited her.

Vera returned to Echoes—her people needed her. She promised to visit. We believed her.

Theo and Mira stayed for a week before returning to their village. Their peace was precious. We understood.

Sarah's loss hung heavy. Earth sent representatives—grieving, grateful, determined to honor her sacrifice. We built a memorial in the academy gardens. A simple stone with her name and the words: She flew so others could live.

I visited it often.

Cassian's Letter

It arrived on the tenth day.

Ren,

Darian and Serena are... healing. It's slow. Painful. Some days he can barely function under the weight of what he's done. Other days, he talks about the future—about rebuilding, about protecting, about trying.

Serena never leaves his side. Her love is... remarkable. After everything, she still believes in him.

I'm staying with them. Not because they need me—because I need them. They remind me that change is possible. That even immortals can become something new.

Thank you. For everything. For believing in me when I didn't believe in myself.

I'll visit when I can. Until then—

Yours in hope,

Cassian

I read it twice. Folded it carefully. Added it to the small collection of precious things I kept.

Mei Lian found me that night. "Good news?"

"Good news. They're healing."

She nodded. Sat beside me. "We are too."

I looked at her—this woman who'd crossed worlds for me, fought beside me, loved me when I couldn't love myself.

"Yeah. We are."

---

The Memorial

On the thirtieth day, we held a ceremony.

Not just for Sarah—for everyone. The four worlds. Theron. The thousands of soldiers who'd died in the long march. Every life lost to the Network's centuries of horror.

Representatives came from everywhere. Gods and mortals, immortals and freed slaves, all gathered in one place to remember.

I spoke last.

"We're here because people died. Because they believed in something bigger than themselves. Because they fought, and hoped, and loved."

I looked at the crowd.

"We can't bring them back. Can't undo their suffering. But we can honor them—by building something worthy of their sacrifice. By making sure no one else has to fight the wars they fought."

Silence.

Then, one by one, people spoke. Names. Stories. Memories.

We stayed until dawn.

---

Theo and Mira's Wedding

It happened on a perfect spring day.

Their village—small, peaceful, alive—hosted the ceremony. Flowers everywhere. Music from local musicians. Food that went on for tables.

Theo stood at the altar, trembling not from fear but from joy. Mira walked toward him—slowly, radiant, his.

They spoke vows. Simple words. True words.

"I love you," Theo said. "I'll love you forever."

Mira smiled. "Forever's a long time."

"I've got nothing but time."

They kissed.

Everyone cheered.

Darius cried—openly, unashamed. Lyra recorded everything. Vera actually laughed. Even Selene, who'd come despite everything, almost smiled.

Mei Lian held my hand through all of it.

"Someday," she whispered.

I looked at her. "Someday."

---

The Future

After the wedding, we walked through the village together.

"Penny for your thoughts," Mei Lian said.

"Just... thinking about what comes next. For us."

"And?"

I stopped. Faced her.

"I don't know. That's the terrifying part. For the first time in years, I don't have a war to fight, a mission to complete, a goal to chase."

She smiled. "So?"

"So... what do we do?"

She took my hands.

"We live, Ren. We just... live. Enjoy each other. Visit friends. Watch sunsets. Be normal, for once."

"Normal." I tested the word. "I'm not sure I know how."

"You'll learn. I'll help." She kissed me. "Together."

"Together."

---

Home

That night, we returned to the academy.

The stars were bright. The world was quiet. For the first time in longer than I could remember, I felt... peaceful.

Not happy—not yet. Grief still lingered. Loss still ached. But peaceful. Like the storm had finally passed.

Mei Lian slept beside me, the bond humming soft and content.

I watched her for a long time. Committed every detail to memory.

Then I closed my eyes and slept.

No dreams. No nightmares. Just rest.

When I woke, morning light was streaming through the window.

A new day.

A new beginning.
