Three days since the four worlds fell.
Three days of numbness, shock, and the slow, terrible realization that millions were gone. That the people we'd freed—the ones who'd hugged us, thanked us, believed in us—were ash and memory.
I stood on Oracle's island, staring at the ocean. It did nothing. Waves didn't care about grief.
Mei Lian found me there. The bond carried her pain—and her strength.
"You haven't slept."
"Neither have you."
She leaned against me. "Different reasons."
We stood together, watching water that had witnessed countless tragedies and would witness countless more.

The Gods' Grief
Inside the temple, twelve gods gathered in silence.
Not the productive silence of meditation. The broken silence of beings who'd dared to hope and been punished for it.
Selene sat apart, frost spreading from her chair across the stone floor. She hadn't spoken since the news arrived. Her cold wasn't defensive now—it was expressive. Grief frozen into permanence.
Ignis's flames guttered low, casting long shadows. He stared at nothing, seeing probably the faces of those he'd helped free on Orthon. All dead now.
Lira moved among them, offering healing that no one accepted. Her hands trembled.
Valdur sat like the mountain he embodied—immovable, silent, crushed. Strength meant nothing when you couldn't protect anyone.
Solara's light had dimmed to twilight. She kept glancing at the space where Theron should have been. He was alive, but wounded—recovering in another chamber. His absence felt like a warning.
Noctis had retreated so deep into shadows he was barely visible. Only his eyes remained, watching, grieving.
Aric stared at ancient texts, searching for answers that weren't there. Terra had withdrawn into stone—literally, her form half-merged with the temple's foundation.
Nereus's waters were still—no movement, no life. Oracle sat at the table's head, aged centuries in three days.
Mira finally spoke.
"We can't stay like this."
No one answered.
"The enemy wants us broken. Wants us divided. Wants us to prove that hope was always foolish." Her voice gained strength. "We can't give them that."
Selene's cold sharpened. "What would you have us do? Pretend we didn't fail?"
"I'd have us grieve—and then act." Mira met her frozen eyes. "Those four worlds didn't die so we could sit here frozen. They died because we weren't ready. We make sure it never happens again."
"How?" Ignis's voice was raw. "We can't be everywhere. Can't protect everyone."
"No. But we can be smarter. Stronger. More united." Mira looked around the table. "We can learn from this. We must learn from this."
Silence stretched.
Then Valdur shifted—actually moved, for the first time in days.
"She's right." His voice rumbled like distant thunder. "Grief is a luxury we can't afford. Not yet."
"Then what can we afford?" Solara asked.
"Rage. Purpose. Determination." He stood. "The first immortal took four worlds from us. We take something from him."
Lira looked up. "Like what?"
"The dagger. The thing that can hurt him permanently." Valdur's eyes blazed. "We go after it. Now. Before he expects it."
Murmurs rippled through the room. Possibility, flickering back to life.

The Mortal Leaders
In another chamber, Darius paced like a caged animal.
"How did this happen? How did we miss it?"
Lyra sat surrounded by screens, face pale from days without sleep. "The first immortal hid it. Used every resource, every trick, every sacrifice to cloud our intelligence."
"That's not good enough!"
"I KNOW!" She slammed her fist on the table. Screens flickered. "I know it's not good enough. I know people died because I failed. You think I don't carry that?"
Darius stopped. Looked at her—really looked.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean—"
"Yes you did. And you're right." Lyra's voice broke. "I should have seen it. Should have—"
"Stop." Vera's quiet voice cut through. "Blame doesn't help. Planning does."
Sarah nodded from her screen. "She's right. Earth's governments are panicking, but they're also offering more support. More troops, more tech, more everything."
"Because they're scared," Darius muttered.
"Because they finally understand the stakes." Sarah met his eyes. "Use that. Don't waste it."
Theo's face appeared on another screen—he and Mira had insisted on being looped in, despite their retirement.
"We're with you," he said quietly. "All of you. Whatever you need."
Mira—our Mira, not the goddess—spoke beside him. "We can't fight anymore. But we can pray. Hope. Believe."
Darius stared at them. At all of them.
"Fine." He straightened. "Then let's figure out how we hit back."

Ren and Mei Lian
We walked along the shore as sunset painted the sky.
"I keep seeing them," I admitted. "The faces from Kaelos. The children who hugged us. The old woman who thanked me. All gone."
Mei Lian held my hand tighter. "I see them too."
"How do we keep going? After this?"
"Because stopping means they died for nothing." She stopped, turned me to face her. "We carry them with us. Every battle, every choice, every moment. They're part of us now."
I looked at her—this woman who'd crossed worlds for me, who'd fought beside me, who'd loved me when I couldn't love myself.
"When did you get so wise?"
"Always was. You just weren't listening."
I almost smiled. Almost.
"What happens now?" she asked.
"I don't know. But I know we face it together."
"Together."

The Council Reconvenes
That evening, gods and mortals gathered in the main chamber.
Mira stood at the head. "We've grieved. Now we plan. The first immortal expects us to be broken. We prove him wrong."
Valdur spoke. "The dagger. It's our best chance to wound him permanently."
"Where is it?" Darius asked.
Oracle answered. "Network central vault. Hidden between worlds. Guarded by an immortal legion and something older."
"Can we get it?"
"Maybe. With a small team. Fast, stealthy, precise."
Selene's voice was cold—but determined. "I'll go."
Ignis nodded. "Me too."
Noctis emerged from shadows. "Shadows will be needed."
Theron, still pale from his wounds, spoke from a chair. "I can't fight yet. But I can advise."
Solara touched his shoulder. "You've done enough."
I stepped forward. "I'll lead it. Mei Lian comes with me."
Darius started to argue. I cut him off.
"You're needed here. If we fail, the alliance needs you. Vera needs you. Lyra needs you." I met his eyes. "This is my fight. Let me fight it."
He held my gaze for a long moment.
Then nodded.
"Don't die."
"Wasn't planning on it."

Preparation
Three days of planning.
Noctis trained us in shadow movement. Selene practiced freezing sensors without damaging them. Ignis prepared diversions. Mei Lian and I drilled coordination until the bond made us move as one.
Theron provided intelligence from his years of fighting the Network. Lira checked everyone's health. Aric studied vault schematics. Terra shaped practice obstacles. Nereus offered escape routes through hidden waterways.
Mira visited each of us privately.
To Mei Lian: "Protect him. He'll try to sacrifice himself."
To Selene: "Your cold is a shield. Use it for others."
To Ignis: "Fire creates, but also destroys. Choose wisely."
To Noctis: "Shadows remember everything. Bring them home."
To me: "You've carried so much. Let them carry you, for once."
I nodded. Didn't trust my voice.

The Night Before
Mei Lian and I lay together, the bond humming soft and warm.
"Scared?" she asked.
"Always."
"Good. Me too." She traced patterns on my chest. "Whatever happens tomorrow—"
"Nothing happens. We come back. Together."
"You can't promise that."
"I can promise I'll try. Harder than I've ever tried anything." I pulled her closer. "Because coming back to you is the only thing that matters."
She kissed me—soft, deep, real.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Don't forget that. Ever."
"Never."

Departure
Dawn came cold and clear.
We gathered at the portal—me, Mei Lian, Selene, Ignis, Noctis. Theron watched from a chair, Solara beside him. The other gods lined the path. Mortal leaders stood at attention.
Mira approached. Pressed something into my hand—a small stone, warm like her blessing.
"A piece of me. For luck."
I pocketed it beside the others.
"Come back," Darius said. "All of you."
"We will."
Noctis opened the portal. The void between worlds yawned before us.
I looked at my team. At the woman I loved. At the future hanging in balance.
"Let's go."
We stepped through.
