Twelve days from the coast to the academy.
I walked them slowly—not from exhaustion, but from need. Need to process. Need to reflect. Need to let the weight of everything settle before I faced the people I loved.
Twelve gods. Twelve blessings. Twelve voices whispering in the back of my mind.
Mira's warmth. Valdur's strength. Lira's healing. Aric's wisdom. Selene's cold. Solara's light. Theron's storms. Oracle's sight. Noctis's shadows. Ignis's fire. Terra's depth. Nereus's sea.
All of them. All waiting. All hoping.
And somewhere, in a place between worlds, Serena tended her garden and waited for someone to save the man she loved.
Three hundred fifty days left.

The Road
I traveled through lands I'd come to know—villages, forests, mountains, plains. Each one held memories now. Each one felt like home.
At a village market, I bought supplies from a woman who reminded me of Marta. At a mountain pass, I rested in a cave that could have been Valdur's. At a forest's edge, I watched sunset paint the sky and thought of Noctis.
The world was full of gods. Full of stories. Full of hope.
I carried them all.

The Academy
It appeared on the horizon at midday.
Same towers. Same walls. Same gates where I'd left weeks ago, carrying nothing but Mira's stone and desperate hope.
Now I returned with twelve blessings and a year to save everything.
Mei Lian waited at the gates.
She stood alone—no Darius, no Lyra, no crowd. Just her, in simple clothes, hair loose, eyes fixed on the road. The bond blazed with everything she felt—relief, joy, love, fear.
I walked to her. Stopped inches away.
"I'm home."
She kissed me.
Fierce. Desperate. Loving. The bond sang with her emotions—relief so intense it hurt, joy so bright it burned, love so deep it had no bottom.
When she finally pulled back, her eyes were wet.
"You were gone so long."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Just—" She hugged me again. "—just be here now."
I held her. Let myself feel home.

The Team
They gathered that evening in our quarters.
Darius. Lyra. Vera. Sarah through a screen. Even Theo and Mira appeared via a communication crystal—their village had one now, thanks to Lyra's efforts.
"Twelve gods," Darius said, shaking his head. "You actually found twelve gods."
"Thirteen if you count Oracle. But she's different."
"Thirteen gods." He whistled. "That's an army."
"It's a start. We need more than gods—we need armies. Fighters from every freed world. Support from Earth. Coordination across dimensions."
Lyra nodded, already planning. "I've been working on that while you were gone. The freed worlds are organizing. Earth's governments are finally cooperating. We have maybe ten thousand fighters ready."
"Ten thousand against—"
"Against who knows how many. The Network's been building for centuries." She met my eyes. "It won't be enough."
"I know. That's why we need the gods. And Serena."
Vera spoke quietly. "Serena. The first immortal's lost love. You really think she can help?"
"I think she's the key. Oracle showed me. Her love—preserved all these centuries—it can reach him. Remind him what he was."
"And if it doesn't?"
I was quiet for a moment.
"Then we fight anyway. We don't stop. We never stop."
Darius grinned. "That's my Ren."

Theo and Mira
After the others left, I spoke with them alone.
They looked good—healthy, happy, peaceful. Theo stood without support now, though he still tired easily. Mira's hands rested in her lap, useless but content.
"You did it," Theo said. "Twelve gods. That's... that's unbelievable."
"I had help."
"You always say that." Mira smiled. "But we know the truth. You carried this. You walked those roads. You found them."
"I couldn't have done any of it without you. Without both of you." I met their eyes. "Theo, you taught me courage. Mira, you taught me sacrifice. I carry you with me every day."
Theo's eyes glistened. Mira squeezed his hand.
"Just come back," she whispered. "When it's over. Come visit. Tell us how the story ends."
"I will. I promise." I've made so many promises now.

Night – Mei Lian
We lay in darkness, tangled together, the bond humming soft and content.
"Twelve gods," she murmured. "A year to save everything. And you still found time to miss me."
"Always."
She kissed my chest. "I felt you, you know. Every blessing. Every vision. Every moment of fear and hope. The bond carried it all."
"Too much?"
"Never enough." She looked up at me. "What happens now?"
"Now we prepare. Train. Gather armies. And when the time comes—" I pulled her closer. "—we go find Serena."
"Together?"
"Together."
She smiled. Settled against me.
For the first time in weeks, I slept peacefully.
---
Dawn – New Day
Morning light streamed through the windows.
I woke alone—Mei Lian already up, already moving. Found her on the balcony, watching the academy come alive.
"Couldn't sleep?"
"Didn't want to." She leaned back against me. "Every moment feels precious now."
"I know."
"Three hundred fifty days. Then everything changes."
"Everything's already changed." I held her. "We just have to make sure it changes for the better."
She nodded. Turned in my arms. Kissed me.
"Then let's get started."
