Chapter 60 - Meanwhile – The Waiting

Three days since Ren left.

The academy felt different without him. Emptier. Quieter. Like someone had dimmed the lights without telling anyone.

Mei Lian stood on the balcony where they'd spent so many nights together, watching the horizon. The bond hummed faintly—he was alive, he was safe, he was moving. But the distance made everything feel muted. Like hearing music through a wall.

"You've been standing there for hours."

She didn't turn. Darius leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, trying to look casual. Failing.

"Three hours, actually."

"Comfortable?"

"No."

He walked out to join her. Leaned on the railing beside her. Said nothing.

They stood like that for a long time—two warriors who'd learned that sometimes silence was better than words.

"He's okay," Darius finally said. "You'd know if he wasn't."

"The bond tells me he's alive. That's all." She touched her chest. "I can feel his emotions—calm, focused, determined. But not details. Not where he is or what he's doing."

"Then trust the calm. If he was in trouble, you'd feel panic."

She nodded slowly. He was right. She knew he was right.

Didn't make waiting easier.

Lyra's Command Center

Three screens. Twelve data streams. One very tired Lyra.

She'd been working nonstop since Ren left—not because she had to, but because stopping meant thinking. And thinking meant worrying.

The first screen showed Network movements—scattered, disorganized, still recovering from Glass. The second showed Earth's governments, their endless demands for information, their growing impatience. The third showed something new: a map of divine energy signatures, compiled from Curator archives and Voss's books.

Mira's temple glowed faintly. Ren's path showed as a golden line moving toward it.

"He's almost there," she murmured.

"Talking to yourself now?"

Vera stood in the doorway. She'd returned from Echoes overnight, unannounced, unable to stay away.

"Couldn't sit still either?"

"Couldn't sleep." Vera walked in, studying the screens. "He's close to the temple?"

"Hours, maybe less. The energy readings are... strange. Something's happening there. Something big."

"Dangerous?"

"I don't think so. It feels... welcoming. Like the place knows he's coming."

Vera nodded slowly. "The goddess. She's real."

"Apparently."

They stood together, watching the golden line inch toward the glowing point.

Waiting.

Sarah's Lab

Sarah hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.

Not because she was worried—okay, partly because she was worried—but because she'd had a breakthrough. The stone from Glass, the one Lily had given Ren, was more than just a memento. It was a key.

She'd been analyzing its properties for days. The way it resonated with Ren's energy. The way it pulsed in rhythm with something distant. The way it seemed to remember.

"Come on," she muttered, adjusting instruments. "Show me what you are."

The stone sat in a containment field, glowing faintly. Readings scrolled across her screen—off the charts, into ranges she'd never seen.

Then it pulsed. Bright. Intentional.

And Sarah saw.

Not with her eyes—with her mind. Images flashed: Glass world before the Network. Beautiful. Peaceful. Children playing in crystal streets. Then the attack. The immortals. The cages. The centuries of suffering.

Then freedom. Ren's face. The battle. The rescue.

Then something else. A face she didn't recognize—ancient, terrible, watching. The first immortal. He knew about the stone. He knew about Ren. He was waiting.

Sarah gasped. Stumbled back.

The stone went dark.

"What... what was that?"

No answer. Just the hum of machines and the pounding of her heart.

The Dining Hall – Evening

Darius sat alone at a long table, pushing food around his plate.

He wasn't hungry. Hadn't been hungry since Ren left. But old habits—eat when you can, sleep when you can, prepare for the next fight—kept him here.

"You're brooding."

Lyra sat across from him. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were sharp as ever.

"Not brooding. Thinking."

"Same thing with you."

He almost smiled. "Maybe."

They sat in silence for a moment. Around them, students laughed and talked, oblivious to the weight pressing on their table.

"Remember when we first met?" Lyra asked. "You hated me."

"Hated everyone."

"True. But especially me." She smiled faintly. "You thought I was just a merchant's daughter playing at politics."

"You were more."

"And you were less of an ass than you pretended."

He snorted. "High praise."

They sat quietly, remembering. The early days of the Conspiracy. The battles. The losses. The victories.

"He always brought us together," Lyra said. "Ren. Even when we didn't want to be together."

"Yeah."

"That's why this feels wrong. Without him, we're just... individuals. Not a team."

Darius nodded slowly. "He'll be back."

"You sure?"

"No. But I'm sure we'll go after him if he's not."

Lyra smiled—real this time. "That's the Darius I remember."

Mei Lian – Night

She lay in their bed alone.

The bond hummed softly—Ren was resting now, somewhere safe, his emotions peaceful. She could almost feel his breathing, his heartbeat, his presence.

Almost.

She'd grown so used to him beside her that the empty space felt vast. Unbearable. The sheets still smelled like him. The pillow still held his shape. She curled around it, holding on, breathing him in.

Come back soon, she thought, pushing it through the bond. I miss you.

A flicker of warmth. Recognition. Love.

He'd felt her.

She smiled in the darkness. Closed her eyes.

For the first time in three days, she slept.

---

Vera's Vigil

She sat on the academy's highest tower, watching stars.

Echoes had taught her to find peace in silence. The endless sound of that world had driven her mad as a slave; now, quiet felt like freedom. Like choice.

But tonight, the quiet felt heavy.

Ren was out there, walking toward a goddess, carrying the weight of all their hopes. Vera had seen too many people she loved die to feel comfortable with any of them out of sight.

"You should sleep."

She didn't turn. Lyra climbed up to join her, breathing hard from the stairs.

"Should. Can't."

"Same." Lyra sat beside her. "What do you think he's finding? Down there in that temple?"

"Answers. Purpose. Probably more questions."

"That's cryptic."

"I'm a cryptic person."

Lyra laughed—quiet, genuine. "You really are."

They watched stars together, two women who'd learned that waiting was its own kind of battle.

---

Dawn – Days later

Mei Lian woke to sunlight and the bond singing.

Ren was moving again. Closer now. Heading back.

She sat up, heart pounding. Checked the bond—joy, anticipation, love. He'd found what he was looking for. He was coming home.

"About time," she whispered.

She dressed quickly. Ran to find the others.

---

The Gathering

They met in the courtyard—Darius, Lyra, Vera, Sarah (pale but excited). Mei Lian stood at the center, vibrating with energy.

"He's coming back. Today. The bond feels... different. Stronger."

Sarah nodded. "The stone from Glass—it showed me something. The first immortal. He knows about Ren. He's waiting."

"How do you know?"

"I saw it. When the stone activated. It showed me things—past, present, future maybe. The first immortal is gathering his forces. He's going to strike soon."

Darius cracked his neck. "Good. Let him."

"We need to prepare," Lyra said. "If Sarah's vision is accurate, we have weeks, maybe less. We need to rally every world, every fighter, every ally."

Vera nodded. "I'll return to Echoes. Bring everyone."

"I'll contact Earth," Sarah added. "Governments need to know."

"And I'll—" Mei Lian stopped. Smiled.

Everyone turned.

There, at the gate, stood Ren.

Tired. Dusty. But whole. Smiling.

"I'm back."

---

The Reunion

Mei Lian reached him first.

The bond exploded with joy as she crashed into him, arms around his neck, face buried in his shoulder. He held her tight, breathing her in, letting her warmth chase away the cold of the temple.

"I missed you," she whispered.

"I missed you too."

"Don't ever do that again."

"Can't promise that."

"I know." She pulled back, kissed him—fierce, desperate, loving. "But I'll keep saying it anyway."

Behind them, Darius clapped slowly. "Beautiful. Can we hear about the goddess now?"

Ren laughed. Actually laughed.

"Yeah. Let's talk."
