Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Ritual of Steel

The ribs knitted. The graze on my arm faded to a pale pink seam. The body heals, a relentless, pragmatic process. But the spirit, the will—that needed a different kind of therapy. Confinement was a rust on my edges, a dulling of the blade. I couldn't go to my private gym beneath the opera house, with its mats and bags and weapons racks. So, I brought the gym to me.

Viktor had a heavy bag, the kind used for professional fighters, installed in a cleared corner of the penthouse's spare room. It was a monstrous, black, sand-filled thing, an alien presence among the minimalist decor. Along with it came a set of kettle bells, a jump rope, and a standing grappling dummy.

My first session was pure, unadulterated catharsis. Strapped into the monitor, I faced the bag. I didn't wrap my hands. I wanted to feel it. The first punch was a release of all the pent-up fury—at Finch, at the ankle monitor, at the lawyers, at my own momentary powerlessness. The thud resonated through the room, through my bones. I fell into a rhythm, a brutal, driving cadence of fists and knees and elbows. The bag swayed and shuddered, absorbing the violence I could no longer unleash on the world. Sweat stung my healing wounds, my breath sawed in my lungs, and for the first time in weeks, I felt my body as my own again.

I didn't hear Ava come home.

The rhythm of my strikes masked the sound of the elevator. I was in the middle of a combination—jab, cross, hook, a spinning back elbow that connected with a satisfying crunch of sand shifting—when I sensed a presence in the doorway.

I stopped, chest heaving, sweat dripping from my chin onto the mat. I turned.

Ava stood there, still in her work blouse and slacks, her bag dangling from her hand. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips slightly parted. But it wasn't the flush of surprise. It was the deep, heated blush of pure, stunned arousal.

Her eyes were wide, locked not on my face, but on my body. I was wearing only a sports bra and tight shorts. My muscles, defined and pumped from the exertion, were slick with sweat. Every scar, every healing mark, was on display. My hair was a wild, damp mess. I must have looked feral. Untamed.

And she was staring as if I were the most breathtaking thing she'd ever seen.

The air between us, already thick with the smell of my sweat and effort, seemed to ignite. The raw, physical display of my strength wasn't intimidating her. It was undoing her.

"I… uh…" she stammered, her gaze finally dragging up to meet mine. "I didn't mean to interrupt."

"You're not interrupting," I said, my voice lower, rougher from the exertion. I picked up a towel, wiped my face slowly, watching her. "You're just… observing."

She swallowed, her throat working. "I… observe that you're going to hurt yourself. Your ribs."

"They're fine." I took a step toward her, the damp towel slung around my neck. Her scent hit me then, cutting through the musk of the gym—linen, office, and the sharp, sweet spike of her desire. It was more potent than any pheromone. "Do I make you nervous, Detective?"

"No," she breathed, but the word was a lie, and we both knew it. I made her something else entirely. "You're just… very…" She gestured vaguely at me, her blush deepening.

"Very what?" I stopped in front of her, close enough for her to feel the heat radiating off my skin.

"Intense," she finally managed, her eyes dropping to my mouth.

I chuckled, a low, rasping sound. "You've seen me kill men, Ava. A little sweat shouldn't scandalize you."

"It's not the sweat," she whispered, her courage finally sparking. Her eyes met mine again, blazing. "It's the… focus. The control. It's… different. Here. With just us."

Understanding dawned. In the warehouse, the violence was survival. Here, it was a ritual. A display of power and discipline for no audience but her. And she was responding to it on a primal, visceral level.

I reached out, my fingers—still wrapped in the faint, sharp scent of leather and effort—brushing a strand of hair from her dampening temple. "Do you want to see the control up close?"

She nodded, a quick, jerky motion.

I didn't kiss her. I turned and walked back to the center of the mat. "Watch."

I began to move through a kata, a pre-arranged sequence of martial forms. It was no longer the brutal, punishing assault on the bag. This was fluidity. Grace. A lethal ballet. Every strike was precise, every block intentional, every shift of my weight a study in balance and potential energy. I moved through the forms, my body a weapon at rest, then in motion, then at rest again. It was the art beneath the violence. The steel within the rose.

I could feel her eyes on me, tracking every movement, every flex of muscle, every line of my body. The blush hadn't faded; it had become a permanent, beautiful heat in her cheeks.

When I finished, coming to a still, centered stance, the only sound was our breathing.

I turned to her. "Come here."

She didn't hesitate. She walked onto the mat, her sensible work shoes looking absurd on the grey foam. She stopped just before me, her head tilted back to look into my eyes.

"You are," she said, her voice trembling with awe and desire, "the most beautiful, terrifying thing I have ever known."

I cupped the back of her neck, my thumb stroking the fluttering pulse there. "The terror is for them." I leaned down, my lips a breath from hers. "For you… there is only this."

I kissed her, and it was a claiming as definitive as any blow. It tasted of her shock and my sweat, of office life and primal ritual. She moaned into my mouth, her hands coming up to grip my slick shoulders, holding on as if I were the only solid thing in a spinning world.

The spice of this chapter wasn't in the sex that followed—though that was inevitable, frantic, and conducted right there on the training mat, her work clothes scattered like fallen leaves. The spice was in the blush. In the power dynamic not just accepted, but craved. It was in the sacred, shared understanding that my strength, my capacity for violence, was not a specter in our home, but a foundational, revered part of our intimacy. She didn't just love me in spite of the Don. She was in love with the Don's ritual, with the steel in my spine, and she worshipped it with a blush and a surrender that made me feel more powerful than any empire ever could.
