Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 – The Purnima Confrontation

The moon hung full in the sky, pale and cold, casting long silver shadows over the clearing. The air was tense, thick with anticipation. Hunters crouched silently with oil-filled clay pots, flammable wicks poised, while Anand's fingers nervously tapped the lighter in his pocket.

From the edge of the forest came a low, dragging sound. The ground trembled under a massive weight. Leaves shivered.

Then it appeared.

Chanmrigasura.

A serpent-like behemoth, black with streaks of green venom, scales glinting in the moonlight. Its eyes glowed poisonous yellow, fangs bared, and muscles coiled like living steel. The villagers froze. The demon's roar split the night, echoing across the Godavari banks.

Agastya stepped forward, calm and composed. His staff tapped lightly on the earth. Every movement, measured. Every breath, deliberate.

"Stand firm," he said. "Observe. Do not act until I command."

Anand's heart thumped. This is… real.

The demon's gaze fell upon Agastya immediately. Its massive head twisted, nostrils flaring. It moved slowly at first, calculating. Agastya did not flinch. Instead, he began to speak — voice low, firm, resonant, carrying a calm authority that seemed to slice through the demon's rage.

"Chanmrigasura," Agastya called. "You do not need to kill. You do not need to rage. Your wrath is misplaced."

The demon paused, almost as if it understood, hissing sharply. Its eyes narrowed.

Anand watched in awe, realizing: the sage wasn't just bait. He was reading the demon. Probing for weaknesses.

"Your strength," Agastya continued, "is tied to the full moon. The sky shifts — you weaken when the moon is clouded. You cannot harm me, and you cannot escape your own limitations."

Slowly, Agastya guided the conversation, drawing the creature toward the prepared traps. Every word, every subtle movement of his hands, directed the asur's attention, keeping it focused on him rather than the villagers or Anand.

The hunters, encouraged by the sage's command, lit the clay pot wicks at the last moment using Anand's lighter. Smoke rose quickly, creating a haze that confused the demon. Flames licked at the ground strategically, forcing Chanmrigasura to thrash into a controlled area.

Anand whispered instructions to the hunters, coordinating the fire arcs. "Mid-coil. Don't hit the head. Keep it moving."

The demon, enraged but wary, lunged, striking at Agastya, who remained calm, stepping aside only when necessary to direct its movement. The asur's power ebbed slightly as clouds drifted across the moon, something only Agastya had anticipated.

Anand realized the full scope: Agastya was the bait, not in recklessness, but in calculation. Every word he spoke, every shift in his weight, every glance at the demon revealed an intimate understanding of its strength, its arrogance, and its limits.

The hunters flung their oil pots into the clearing, flames and smoke adding chaos, but it was the sage's guidance that made the chaos precise. The demon roared, venom spraying, coils thrashing, yet it could not touch Agastya.

Slowly, inch by inch, Chanmrigasura's movements became predictable. Its thrashes were funneled, its strikes guided toward the controlled traps Anand and the hunters had set.

And through it all, Agastya's calm voice never wavered: "Strength alone does not dominate the world. Intelligence, timing, and understanding—these are your true weapons.

Anand's mind raced. His modern tactics — the lighter, fire placement, timing — were useful, but without Agastya's intellect, this would have ended in disaster.

The moon remained partially hidden, casting silver light across the demon's massive form. The first volley of fire hit accurately. Smoke and fire confused the creature further. It snapped and thrashed, but the bait — Agastya — never faltered.

Anand's heart pounded. Every moment was tense, every breath calculated. The battle had begun, but the turning point — the demon's recognition of its limitations — was already visible.
