Chapter 1 - "The Girl who Only Existed on February 14th"

Ethan never believed in Valentine's Day.

To him, it was just red balloons, overpriced roses, and couples pretending to be perfect for twenty-four hours. Every year on February 14th, he followed the same routine — avoid social media, avoid restaurants, and definitely avoid romance.

But this year was different.

On the morning of February 14th, as Ethan sat alone in his favorite quiet café, someone asked, "Is this seat taken?"

He looked up.

She had silver earrings shaped like tiny hearts and eyes that seemed to carry both laughter and mystery.

"No," he replied. "It's free."

She smiled and sat down.

Her name was Lily.

They talked as if they had known each other for years. She spoke about dreams, about traveling without maps, about loving without fear. She said Valentine's Day wasn't about couples — it was about courage. The courage to love, even when you might lose.

Ethan felt something shift inside him.

For the first time in years, he laughed freely. He told her about his fear of relationships, about how he once loved someone who left without saying goodbye. Lily didn't judge. She just listened.

As the day went on, they walked through the city. They bought street coffee. They wrote their wishes on a napkin and folded it into a paper heart. She made him promise something strange:

"Promise me you'll show up next Valentine's Day. Same café. Same time."

He laughed. "Are you planning to disappear or something?"

She didn't answer directly. She just said, "Promise."

"I promise," he said.

As the sun began to set, she stood in front of him.

"I have to go."

"So soon?"

She nodded. "Some people are only meant to meet you when your heart is ready."

Before he could ask what she meant, she kissed his cheek and walked away into the crowd.

Ethan waited for her message that night.

It never came.

He went back to the café the next day.

No one knew her.

The waiter said he had been sitting alone the entire morning.

Confused and heartbroken, Ethan thought maybe he imagined her. Maybe loneliness had created a perfect illusion.

A whole year passed.

On February 14th the next year, Ethan returned to the café — not because he believed she would come, but because he had promised.

He sat at the same table.

At exactly 10:17 a.m., the door opened.

"Is this seat taken?"

His heart stopped.

It was her.

Same silver heart earrings. Same mysterious smile.

"You came," she said softly.

"You're real?" he whispered.

She laughed. "More real than your fear."

She explained that a year ago, she had been leaving the city forever. She didn't want to start something she couldn't continue. But that day with him had changed her too.

"I thought if you came back," she said, "it would mean you chose love over fear."

Ethan reached for her hand.

"I did."

She squeezed his fingers.

"Then let's not waste another Valentine's Day."

This time, when she walked into the crowd, he walked with her.

And for the first time, Valentine's Day wasn't about roses or red balloons.

It was about a promise kept.

And a love brave enough to return.
