Chapter 9 - Silent then death

James climbed.

The staircase narrowed further, the spiral tightening until the walls pressed in like cold, unyielding hands. Each step felt deliberate, measured. Not just for survival, but because the tower demanded it. Stone beneath his boots whispered warnings only his body could understand.

He adjusted his grip on the worn iron sword. Its weight was uneven, the edge chipped, but it was steel.

That was enough.

Level Two, he reminded himself. Not much… but enough to survive this floor. Maybe Level Three was just around the corner.

He let out a short, bitter laugh. It died almost immediately, swallowed by the stone.

A pulse ran through the walls as he climbed. Not vibration. Not sound.

Awareness.

Patient. Watching.

"This place is watching," James muttered under his breath. "And judging."

The air grew colder. He drew a shallow breath. It burned his lungs. Mist seeped from cracks in the stone, curling around his shoulders and wrists, whispering with a faint, sibilant hiss that reminded him of distant voices he refused to recognize.

The staircase ended.

---

Floor Three revealed itself in muted shadows.

The chamber was wide, wider than the second floor, but the ceiling felt lower, pressing down like a lid about to snap shut. Pillars stood in rigid lines, yet darkness pooled thickly between them, heavy and restless. Mist crawled across the floor, coiling around stone supports as if tasting the air for movement.

James froze.

The interface hovered faintly at the edge of his vision. Health full. Stamina recovering. Level Two glowed quietly, promising growth but offering no guarantees.

The floor shifted beneath his feet. Not a trap.

Not yet.

Illusions stirred.

Doors that weren't there flickered at the edges of his sight. Shadows moved against the light. Figures stood motionless between pillars, watching from angles that made no sense. The system labeled nothing.

This was not instruction.

This was judgment.

James swallowed. "Alright," he muttered. "Let's see who's first."

He advanced slowly, sword raised. Each step was careful, calculated, testing stone before committing weight. The mist thickened, turning the pillars into towering silhouettes that seemed to lean closer when he wasn't looking.

A whisper slid through the air.

"You will fail… player."

James glanced to all sides. But saw nothing.

"You're not gonna leave this place... Alive," the voice continued from the darkness.

James frowned. His hand tightened on his sword hilt. "Really?" he said aloud. "That's the best you've got? Come on though guy. You can do better then this," he shouted.

The sound vanished.

Only silence respond in return.

But then. Something moved. Mist start to gather around the chamber. A shadow appeared between two pillars. Humanoid, but wrong. Its head stretched too tall, arms too long, body flickering like a dying projection. Its eyes glimmered with something unreal.

It lunged.

James swung. The iron sword cut through empty air. The figure dissolved, then reformed a step away.

He cursed, spinning, slashing again. Miss. Miss. The sword shuddered with each useless strike.

This wasn't about strength.

It was about patience.

Calling the sword reliable would have been generous. It flexed slightly with every swing, threatening to snap. Still, steel was steel. Better than a sharpened stick exploding in his hands.

The illusion darted through the fog, vanishing and reappearing closer each time. James ducked, rolled, jabbed, swore under his breath, then finally landed a clumsy slash across its midsection.

A wail tore through the chamber.

The shadow staggered, flickered, and collapsed into nothing with a hiss of dying mist.

James stood there, panting. "Finally," he said. "Is it dead?"

No answer.

Then the system updated.

Fifty-five experience points added.

Current experience: 170 out of 250.

James blinked, then let out a breathless laugh. "Wow. Fifty-five points. Not bad. Not bad at all."

The chamber did not relax.

Floor Three was alive.

Pressure plates triggered spikes without warning. Flames burst from hidden vents. Walls slid and snapped shut, only to retract again. Illusions masked solid ground as empty space, and empty space as safety.

James adapted.

He tested each step with the tip of his sword. Step. Pause. Recalibrate. Move. Mist clung to the blade and dripped from its edge. His breathing slowed, controlled, deliberate.

Somewhere ahead, steel glimmered faintly.

An enemy.

Real this time.

The figure stepped into view. Muscular. Hunched. Claws tipped with metallic points. Skin mottled like corroded iron. When it hissed, the sound vibrated through James's chest, turning his stomach.

He raised his sword. "Let's not make this personal."

The creature struck first, terrifyingly fast. James barely dodged, spinning as he drove the blade into its side. Pain flashed through his hand as steel scraped bone. He stumbled back, blood streaking the hilt.

It roared and slashed downward. James ducked, lunged, parried. Sparks flew as sword met claw.

Swing. Dodge. Counter.

Pain bloomed across his shoulders and ribs. Stamina dipped, then clawed its way back as he forced his breathing steady.

Mid-fight, realization hit him.

This thing fed on hesitation.

Every pause was punishment.

James smiled despite the blood. "Level Two, huh?" he muttered. "Let's see how you like this."

No hesitation.

He feinted left, slid low across the dusty floor, and drove the blade up beneath the creature's guard.

Stab. Pull. Slash.

The monster staggered backward, stepped onto the wrong stone.

Spikes erupted.

The creature was impaled in a violent spray of dark ichor. Its claws scraped uselessly before it collapsed.

James stood there, shaking, breathing hard. "That… was something else," he said quietly. "But I survived."

The system answered.

Enemy defeated: Ironbound Lurker.

Experience awarded: 100 XP.

Level advancement achieved.

Current level: 3.

Current XP: 270 out of 500.

Light cascaded across his vision. Strength flooded his limbs, heavy but solid. Health climbed. Stamina surged. The ache dulled into background noise.

James flexed his fingers, checking the shallow cut on his arm, the bruises blooming across his shoulder.

"Alright," he said, a grin breaking through. "Level Three. I'm officially harder to kill."

Level ascension complete.

HP: 130.

Stamina: 120.

Adaptation successful.

His gaze dropped to the weapon lying beside the corpse.

A better sword.

He picked it up, testing the weight. Heavy. Balanced. Real.

"Better than nothing," he murmured. "And maybe… this one sticks around."

At the far end of the chamber, a narrow corridor opened. The mist thinned. The illusions faded. The floor went still.

James exhaled slowly. "Floor Three," he said. "Done."

The staircase rose ahead.

He climbed.

Stronger. Armed. Experienced.

And fully aware that the tower was only beginning to bare its teeth.

Floor Three was behind him.

The tower knew his name now.

James didn't slow. He couldn't.

"Next floor," he said softly, gripping the sword tighter. "I'm coming."
