"Thank you, honey. For getting me what I asked for," I said.
I tried to act as normal as possible so he wouldn't suspect anything. I wouldn't ask how he got the pastries either, because I figured that was trivial. There were still many important things I needed to do and find out from him.
"Why aren't you eating them? I went all the way to get them for you," he said as he lay down beside me.
"All the way?" I said. "You were in Malang earlier, right? And you bought them there. So how was it far?"
"Oh, right, hehehe. You should eat them," he said, scratching his head.
You can't even answer a simple question, yet you have the nerve to plan another marriage? What a low class playboy.
"Maybe tomorrow. It doesn't feel right to snack this late at night. Besides, I'm really sleepy," I said.
"Alright then, let's go to bed. Oh, and honey, I have to travel out of town again tomorrow. I might not be home for three days. Is that okay?" he asked with a smile.
"Of course it's okay. Would I ever stop my husband from working?" I said.
"But you trust me, right? That I'm faithful to you?" he asked, looking at me and taking my hand.
I pulled my hand away. The thought of his relationship with Raisa made me feel disgusted. From today onward, I didn't want him to touch me again. Chandra looked surprised by my reaction; I was usually so affectionate with him.
"I don't know," I said.
"Why would you say that?" Chandra moved closer to me.
"It's just, you're out all the time. How would I know what you're doing out there?" I said, pouting.
"Since when have you thought like that? You're making me want to spoil you even more."
Chandra wrapped his arm around my shoulder and tried to kiss me, but I pulled away. Three years together had taught me to recognize when he wanted me. After what he'd done, he could forget about the old Dita ever coming back.
"Sorry, honey. I'm really tired. Don't bother me. Good night," I said, turning my back to him.
"Hmmm, okay then. Good night, my beloved wife," he said, ruffling my hair.
I pretended to sleep and closed my eyes. A few minutes later, I heard soft snoring beside me, a sign my husband was sound asleep. Once I was sure he wouldn't wake up, I got out of bed and got to work.
My first target was Chandra's phone, which I saw on the nightstand next to the bed. It was unusual for it to be there; he usually kept it in his pocket wherever he went. Maybe he was just too tired tonight and forgot to put it away.
I picked up the slim device, but unfortunately I couldn't go any further, it was locked. I tried several combinations of words and letters I thought might be important to him, but none worked. I gave up for now and decided to think about the password tomorrow. Once I knew it, I would monitor his phone closely.
Next, I looked for his wallet in the pants he'd been wearing earlier, but it wasn't there. I checked his work bag instead and found it inside.
I opened the small brown leather wallet immediately. The main compartment only had a few banknotes. There were also several credit cards and ATM cards. I took the ATM card linked to my account – the one I'd given him, where all the company's earnings were deposited.
My plan was to print the bank statement tomorrow. I already had the necessary documents, so I would transfer all the funds to my personal account. Then I'd go to the office and tell the finance department to move all business earnings to my private account as well.
I checked the other pockets in his wallet. There were a few business cards, but one caught my eye, it belonged to a real estate agent. I remembered Raisa saying he would give her a house as a wedding gift. I slipped the card into my pocket.
I also saw a small photo of me tucked behind the business cards. I smiled to myself, he still kept an old picture of me after all this time.
I quickly put the wallet back where I found it and got ready to sleep. I had a lot to do tomorrow. It was convenient he'd be out of town; I didn't care if it was for work or his affair. Either way, his absence would make it easier for me to check on the company I hadn't seen in so long. I had many changes planned. His betrayal had woken me up from my comfort zone, and I would make sure he regretted what he'd done.
"Honey, I'm leaving now. It won't be long, just two or three days at most. It's tiring to keep driving back and forth," he said as he put on his shoes.
"Okay. Stay longer if you need to," I said casually.
"That's strange, you seem happy to let me go this time. Usually you hate when I'm away for too long."
"I've changed. I want to be more mature so people can't lie to me so easily," I said.
"Hmmm, you're being so weird today. Alright then, I'm off."
Chandra drove his car out through the gate. This time, I didn't bother to kiss his hand and moved away when he tried to kiss my forehead. Small gestures like that would never be the same between us again.
Once he was gone, I hurried out as well. My destinations for the day were the bank and the office.
When I arrived at the bank, I immediately requested a statement and transferred all the funds to my personal account. I also set up mobile banking for the account and planned to return the ATM card to its place later.
I saw enormous amounts of money that had been moved into Chandra's accounts. I'd been so foolish to trust him with all our finances and the company. I'd let him take advantage of me long enough. We'd see what I could do to repay him for this.
You were wrong to think I was stupid and didn't understand business. I just wanted to respect you as my husband and didn't want you to feel inferior to me. But instead, you abused that trust.
When I got to the office, I would trace where all this money had gone. I'd dig into every aspect of the company's finances. You have no idea I still have trusted people there, the same ones who worked with my father.
Before heading to the office, I stopped to buy several smart cameras. I planned to place them in Chandra's office and his car.
Walking into the office felt different; so much had changed since I'd been there last, almost a year ago. The staff looked surprised to see me, but they still treated me with respect. I made my way to my husband's office, where a pretty young woman with slightly flashy makeup approached me as she was about to go inside.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. Mr. Chandra isn't here right now," she said politely, though she looked a bit nervous.
"I know," I said.
"Oh, I see. Can I help you with anything?" she asked again. It seemed she didn't want me to enter his office.
"No, thank you. You can get back to work," I said.
"Well then, could you wait out here for a moment? I need to tidy up first. The office is quite messy. The cleaning staff didn't get to it earlier."
Why was she so afraid of me going in there? Something was definitely wrong. She was being far too protective of her boss's office.
