Chapter 2 - Beast eyes. Trouble

The entire assembly was dead silent as everyone stared at Lucian, who seemed to have frozen in front of the orb; his body didn't react for a long time as his eyes looked in front of him lifelessly.

He didn't need anyone to tell him; it was common knowledge on planet Tyrathis that eye abilities were more or less useless; they had no practical uses that were useful for tamers, and Lucian's ability especially sounded very useless.

Beast eyes? What was that supposed to do? See the world from the perspective of a beast? Or allow a beast to see through your eyes? Was Lucian going to become a scout for his beast in the future?

'We can never tell what it might be, let's test it out first.' The teacher thought to himself before turning to Lucian.

"Kid, how about trying to use your ability first? It might give you a pleasant surprise," the teacher suggested. His words of hope lit a small spark in Lucian's heart.

He immediately did as he was told and used his ability; his eyes glowed with a faint blue light, and he began to look around.

He had studied in the academy for three years and had received many lessons on how to use their abilities after awakening them, so he didn't need to be taught how to activate his beast eyes.

After looking around for a few seconds, Lucian's expression slowly turned into one of despair.

"How is it? Do you feel any different or see anything different?" The teacher asked, everyone else also paid great attention to him and waited for his response.

"No," Lucian replied softly with his head lowered.

The teacher thought for a while before suddenly stretching out his arm, and a strange tattoo appeared on the back of his palm.

With a burst of beast essence, a shadow flew out from the tattoo and landed in front of the teacher.

The shadow soon formed and became a huge tiger with two large horns. The appearance of the beast excited all of the students and they immediately fixed their gazes on the beast. It looked very majestic and released a powerful aura that left them in awe.

Lucian was also stunned by the appearance of the beast, he took a step back with a fearful expression.

"Don't run, it won't attack you. Your ability is related to beasts, so I summoned it; use your ability on it if there will be any changes." The teacher said to Lucian.

The latter nodded and once again used his ability; his eyes lit up, and his gaze focused on the beast.

"So, did anything happen?" The teacher asked.

Lucian replied that he was only able to see the beast's name and when asked, answered correctly.

" I see, so your ability allows you to see the true names of beasts. It's not too bad, you can work out something with it." The teacher encouraged before calling for the next student to come for their awakening.

Lucian turned around and walked back to the assembly of students, his eyes were similar to those of dead fishes.

He could tell that the teacher was only encouraging him and didn't mean anything he said. Work something out? What could he possibly work out by reading out beasts' names?

"As expected of someone who took so long before awakening, he should have stayed home longer before coming."

"The old ancestor of the academy finally awakened; maybe he'll become a knowledgeable professor and read out the names of all his students' contracted beasts in the future and impress them."

"Not bad, not bad. As expected of the oldest student in the academy, all of his classmates already have one star contracted beasts but he's just awakening his ability."

Lucian's expression darkened further as he heard the whispers of the students while he walked to the back of the assembly where Marcos was waiting for him.

Their words were not wrong; Lucian had been in the academy since he was 14, and everyone who entered around the same age as him had long awakened and contracted their first beasts.

This had saddened him greatly, he had faced mockery and humiliation at the hands of his classmates for the past 3 years. Even then, there was nothing he could do than to wait patiently for the time he would awaken and shame them.

But just when his moment to shine finally arrived, he awakened a useless ability!

Lucian felt like punching something as he walked silently, his fists clenched tightly as he tried to ignore the harsh comments of his fellow students.

He reached the back after what felt like an eternity and stood beside Marcos like a statue.

"Come on bro, don't be so downed. Remember what I said? We're sworn brothers; I'll make sure you don't face any difficulty in the future." Marcos patted Lucian's shoulder and said seriously.

Lucian forced a smile as he looked at his friend, his heart was too heavy for him to say anything.

All of his thoughts were filled with his new ability, and what way it might be useful; he wasn't able to think of anything yet.

Time passed swiftly as more students went up for the awakening, after a couple of minutes passed, everyone present had finally finished with their awakening.

"Since everyone is done with their awakening, you can all return to your classes for the rest of the school hours. Tomorrow will be the day you all contract your first beast and officially become tamers. For those who were unable to pay for specially prepared beasts, the academy will provide you with beasts to sign a contract with but how far you can go will depend on you." The teacher said in a loud voice as they left the place with the orb.

The assembly of students immediately scattered after the teachers left and the youngsters became rowdy as they chatted freely.

Some of their discussions were obviously about Lucian as they ridiculed him.

"Let's go, bro, don't pay any attention to them," Marcos said to Lucian and pulled him over, but a group of students appeared and blocked their path before they could leave.

Lucian and Marcos frowned when they saw who it was.

"Joshua," Lucian mumbled softly. The people in front of them were Joshua and his goons, Joshua was the one who had crossed gazes with Lucian when Marcos was going to awaken.

"It sure is lively here. I heard that you were awakening today, so I came to congratulate an old friend." Joshua grinned, he was only 16 but was already so sinister with his words.

It was true that they were old classmates as they had entered the academy in the same year but they were far from being friends.

The two had actually been in a fight during their first year in the academy and Lucian had beaten him up badly. Joshua had then awakened a month after that. Since then, he hasn't missed a chance to pick fights with Lucian just to get back at him.

"Hey, let us pass. We don't wish to play with you today!" Marcos shouted and tried to force his way through but the people behind Joshua suddenly moved toward him and grabbed his fat body, preventing him from being able to intervene in whatever was about to happen.

Joshua looked at the struggling Marcos and snickered disdainfully before walking toward Lucian.

"So you have awakened and now a tamer, although you have not signed a contract yet; you will soon. So, how about we do our rematch now? I want to return the humiliation that you gave me in the past." Joshua said with a wicked smile on his face while moving closer to Lucian, quickly shortening the gap between them to one meter.

Lucian's eyes were as cold as ice. He was already pissed because of the result of his awakening and was on the verge of exploding after listening to the comments of the other students, seeing Joshua's irritating face did nothing but anger him even more.

Without any warning, Lucian suddenly shot a punch toward Joshua's face. The punch was so unexpected and fast that none of the students who were watching from around them nor Joshua expected it and were stunned in place.

Joshua's eyes widened as he watched the incoming knuckles that would smash into his face any moment from now, his body refusing to react.

Pah!

Luckily for him, just before Lucian's punch could smash into his face, a big strong hand suddenly appeared out of nowhere and caught Lucian's hand right in front of Joshua's nose.

A soft gust of wind blew against Joshua's nose after the punch was stopped and only then did he react. He jumped back with an embarrassed expression and pointed at Lucian.

"How dare you try to ambush me, you bastard?! Don't you know anything other than sneak attacks? Fight me fairly if you dare!" Joshua spat out angrily.

Lucian didn't answer him; his eyes trailed the arm that had caught his fist, and he met a pair of sharp, piercing eyes looking at him sternly.

It was their class teacher, Mr. Alucard!

" What do you think you're doing?" The unfriendly voice of Mr. Alucard drifted into Lucian's ears as the grip around his wrist tightened slightly.

Lucian didn't scream in pain and only looked back at his teacher with expressionless eyes; he was already used to Mr. Alucard's unfriendliness toward him.

"He provoked me first," Lucian muttered.

"And so what? Joshua is one of the top talents in the academy and our hope to rise in the ranking in the upcoming competition. Did you try to ambush him so that he won't be able to attend training?

I can see how vile you are toward your fellow classmates, no wonder you awakened a trash ability. You would have been a scourge in society if you had a good ability; everyone would be in danger.

Now go home, you are suspended for the rest of the day; I do not want to see you in my class!"
