Synopsis
This passage presents a lively conversation between Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet informs her husband that Netherfield Park has been rented by a wealthy young man named Mr. Bingley. She is very excited because he is single and rich, and she hopes that he might marry one of her five daughters. Mr. Bennet listens quietly and humorously teases his wife, pretending not to be interested. Mrs. Bennet, however, is impatient and eager to share every detail she has heard from Mrs. Long about the new neighbor. The conversation reveals Mrs. Bennet’s main concern in life – finding good husbands for her daughters – and shows Mr. Bennet’s calm and sarcastic nature. The arrival of Mr. Bingley is introduced as an important event that will influence the future of the Bennet family. Overall, the passage sets the stage for the main story by introducing key characters, their personalities, and the central theme of marriage. — Moonis Tariq

Chapter 1 - AN EXCELLENT FATHER

"PRIDE AND PREJUDICE"

"My dear Mr Bennet," said Mrs Bennet one day, "have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?"

Mr Bennet replied that he had not.

"But it is," said she; "for Mrs Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."

Mr Bennet made no answer.

"Do you want to know who has taken it?" cried his wife impatiently.

"You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it."

This was invitation enough.

"Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England. He came on Monday… to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed to take it…"

"What is his name?"

"Bingley."

"Is he married or single?"

"Oh single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!"

"How?"
