The clearing had transformed into something that no longer belonged entirely to the living world. The mist hung thick around the shattered terrain like a patient congregation of ghosts, and the faint lights of the strange plants and insects scattered across the broken earth cast long, distorted shadows that seemed to stretch and crawl along the ground as though trying to escape the violence unfolding between us. The subtle embers left behind by the earlier fighting still burned quietly beneath broken armour and shattered branches, and each dying flame trembled violently whenever the black inferno around Quentin surged outward in another pulse of heat. The air itself had become difficult to breathe, thick with the iron scent of blood and the bitter tang of burned flesh, and beneath it all there lingered something darker, something ancient and heavy that seemed to seep from the mountain itself as though the land had begun to witness and remember what was happening here tonight. Quentin stood at the center of it all.
The black flames still coiled around him like living serpents, their movements slow and deliberate, pulsing with a rhythm that felt disturbingly similar to breathing. The heat radiating from him was immense, so intense that even standing several meters away my armour began to warm against my skin. Sextus had instinctively stepped back beside Gunish, the massive serpent coiling protectively around him, its scales glimmering faintly in the warped light. Only Whitescale remained close enough to endure the inferno, his presence steady and unmoving even as the dark fire surged violently around Quentin's body. Guo Long stood opposite them.
The man no longer carried the casual amusement he had worn earlier. His expression had sharpened into something colder and more focused, the muscles in his jaw tightening as his spear rotated slowly in his grip. With each movement of the weapon a faint green glow pulsed along the shaft, traveling through the metal like veins of living energy. The light flickered brighter with every strike he made, responding to the rhythm of his breathing and the tightening of his muscles. It was not merely a weapon technique. It was something deeper, something connected to whatever strange force fueled the Bahal users we had seen earlier. The battle erupted again without warning.
Guo Long lunged first, the spear cutting through the heated air with a whistle that cracked like thunder as it passed through the field of black flames. Quentin met the strike with his heavy sword, the impact producing a shockwave that rippled through the clearing and sent dust and fragments of scorched bark spiraling outward. The moment their weapons collided the green energy pulsed violently along Guo Long's spear, forcing Quentin to step back half a pace as the power surged into the blade. Before Guo Long could follow through, Whitescale moved. Odowah launched him.
The great beast crouched low and then exploded upward, hurling Whitescale through the air with a strength that shattered the common understanding of physics and balance. Whitescale's body rotated mid-flight, both swords raised high as gravity seemed to momentarily forget its hold on him. He descended like a falling star, both blades slashing downward toward Guo Long with such overwhelming force that the ground beneath them cracked in anticipation of the impact. Guo Long barely escaped.
He twisted his body at the last possible moment, rolling sideways as the twin blades slammed into the earth where he had been standing. The impact detonated the ground beneath them, sending shards of stone and soil erupting into the air. One of Whitescale's swords clipped Guo Long's chest plate during the maneuver, slicing through the metal and carving a deep wound across the skin beneath.
Guo Long staggered back, his breath catching sharply as blood began to seep through the torn armour. The green glow around his spear flickered erratically for a moment. A few meters away Zu Tai was still struggling to remain conscious.
The man knelt beside a broken tree trunk, one hand pressed desperately against the stump of his severed arm as blood continued to pour through his fingers. His face had gone pale beneath the grime of battle, and I could see his lips moving rapidly as he attempted to strike pressure points along his body to slow the bleeding. His technique was precise, clearly trained but the wound was too severe. No matter how hard he tried, the blood continued to flow. Then Quentin appeared in front of him.
The movement was so fast that for a moment my eyes simply refused to process it. One heartbeat Quentin stood near the center of the clearing, and the next heartbeat he was already within striking distance of Zu Tai, his sword raised high and descending toward the man's throat. Guo Long intercepted him.
The red-armoured warrior moved with shocking speed, crossing the distance between them in a blur of motion. His spear struck Quentin's blade with a violent clash that sent sparks spiraling across the clearing. He followed the block with a brutal kick to Quentin's chest that drove him backward several meters, the black flames around him erupting outward in response.
Guo Long turned sharply toward Zu Tai. "Get out of here," he barked, his voice carrying a rare urgency that cut through the chaos of the battlefield. "You are beyond battle effective. Inform the others we lost Victor's body." The words struck me like a physical blow. Lost Victor's body. My eyes snapped toward Whitescale, confusion and alarm surging through my mind. Sextus had clearly heard it as well, his brow furrowing deeply as he tightened his grip on his war axe.
Guo Long continued, his voice low and controlled even as blood dripped from the wound across his chest. "Tell them to move to fourth formation if I don't return. And inform them the Destroyer is at this location." The name hung in the air like a dark omen. Zu Tai nodded weakly. He began forming a strange hand motion, his body tensing as energy gathered beneath his feet. The air around him warped slightly, suggesting he intended to use some high-speed movement technique to escape the battlefield. Sextus moved first.
With a roar that shook the nearby trees he hurled his massive war axe across the clearing. The weapon spun through the mist like a violent comet before slamming into Zu Tai's side with brutal force. The impact threw the wounded man against a nearby tree with such violence that the trunk splintered loudly beneath the collision. Zu Tai collapsed, his leg twisting at an unnatural angle as pain tore a scream from his throat. Guo Long turned to intervene. Quentin stopped him.
Their weapons clashed again with explosive force, the black flames around Quentin surging outward as the green energy along Guo Long's spear brightened to an almost blinding intensity. The two men moved with terrifying speed, each strike and parry flowing into the next with a precision that made the entire exchange resemble a deadly dance. Sextus sprinted toward Zu Tai.
He glanced briefly toward Quentin as he passed, nodding once in silent acknowledgment. Quentin's eyes met his for a fraction of a second, and despite the rage burning inside them I saw the faintest flicker of recognition. I followed. Zu Tai was already struggling to stand when I closed the distance. I threw a pair of whistling knives toward him, the blades shrieking through the air to force him into a defensive stance. His katana snapped upward to deflect the attack, the metal ringing sharply in the quiet mist. Sextus struck from the darkness.
He emerged from behind a thick cluster of mist with a savage roar, his war axe swinging downward toward Zu Tai's shoulder. The wounded warrior barely managed to raise his katana in time, the impact sending a shockwave through his already weakened body. I surged forward with a short burst from my gravity boots.
The subtle thrust accelerated my movement just enough to close the gap instantly. My sword arced toward Zu Tai's thigh in a wide sweeping strike. He twisted aside, the blade carving only a shallow cut through his armour. I continued the motion. The momentum carried me into a second rotation, my blade rising upward from hip to shoulder in a brutal follow-through strike. The edge scraped across his chest plate, slicing through the metal but failing to penetrate deeply enough to end him. I dropped a spark bomb.
The device detonated instantly, releasing a burst of blinding light and magnetic resonance that distorted Zu Tai's senses. The sudden interference slowed his reaction time dramatically. Sextus struck again. His axe buried itself deep into Zu Tai's shoulder with a sickening crunch. Before the man could recover I used my gravity thrusters to slide behind him, my sword cutting cleanly through the tendons behind his knee. Zu Tai collapsed to one knee with a howl of rage and pain.
For a moment he stared at us both, shaking his head slowly as if refusing to accept the reality of his defeat. A strange pressure began building around his body, the air vibrating slightly as though he intended to trigger some final technique. Gunish interrupted him.
The massive serpent's tail slammed into Zu Tai with catastrophic force, launching him against another tree trunk. The wood shattered beneath the impact. Sextus leapt forward without hesitation. His axe came down like a falling mountain. Zu Tai's skull split cleanly in two. Silence followed the blow. For a moment none of us moved. Then something crashed into the clearing behind us.
Guo Long landed heavily against the ground, sliding several meters through the dirt before coming to a stop. His body was covered in deep wounds, and the lower portion of his right arm had been completely severed at the forearm. Blood soaked through the torn edges of his armour as he struggled to push himself upright. He tried to run. Quentin's sword stopped him. The heavy blade flew through the air with terrifying speed before burying itself deep into Guo Long's thigh, pinning him to the ground. Guo Long gasped in pain. Quentin stepped out of the mist behind him.
In one hand he held the severed forearm that had once belonged to Guo Long. "You think escape is possible?" Quentin hissed quietly. The calm rage in his voice made my skin crawl. Guo Long's expression changed. For the first time since the battle began the man truly understood that death had arrived for him. He glanced once toward Zu Tai's corpse.
Something like frustration flickered across his features. "You kill me," he said hoarsely, "and you bring certain death to many others." Looking at us waiting, "You are confident for a dead man," I replied coldly. "This war was not ours," I continued, stepping closer. "You brought it to us. And now you want to escape death with threats?" Guo Long looked at each of us in turn.
Then he straightened his posture slightly, gathering what dignity he had left. "Mark my words," he began. Quentin moved. The katana that had belonged to Zu Tai plunged through Guo Long's skull before he could finish the sentence. The man froze mid-breath, his eyes blinking rapidly as his body struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
Quentin leaned close to his ear "Only darkness awaits you," he whispered. Guo 's eyes flickered in what seemed like terror "I crave out your eyes to witness my madness, cut out your heart to feel your sorrow, burn your flesh to make copying or remake you impossible but I will take your head burn it's flesh and clean it," the words sank like true horror "I shall put your eyes back into your fleshless skull and place your heart in between your jaws, and carry you with me as slaughter all you love and care for," Quentin kneeled beside Guo "for everyone will know what happens to the fool who lays a hand on the head of the Messier family and their allies." What followed was something none of us would ever forget. Quentin removed Guo Long's eyes slowly. He cut open the man's chest and tore the heart free from the ribcage. The black flames devoured the body until nothing remained but ash. Finally Quentin severed the head.
When he walked away from the battlefield he carried the skull in one hand and the still-warm heart in the other. The mist closed behind him like a curtain. And the whispers in the mountain grew louder.
