Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

When Izuku arrived home, the first thing he encountered, as always, was his mother, Inko Midoriya. A woman already with several years on her, but who maintained her slender figure; she had hair and eyes with a greenish hue.

Nothing like her only son, who had inherited everything from his father, someone who left before he was born.

"Izuku, son. How did it go at the park? You didn't get into a fight, right?" Inko asked, more worried than necessary. She knew better than anyone about Bakugo, the son of her best friend.

Izuku only remained silent for a few seconds, but in the end, he responded. "Yes, Mother. If you're worried about Katsuki, don't be. I think we should go and check if my quirk awakened."

He answered without any emotion, walking toward the main living room of the house to take one of the books from the shelf.

His mother only looked at him in silence, processing what he had told her. Even though she had grown used to her son's personality, she never got fully accustomed to it. After all, a four-year-old child should not act like that.

'Since he was a baby, his eyes have never looked into mine…' Inko thought sadly, remembering that her only son had never looked at her directly.

She thought it was because of his quirk. Very few, but very few children showed symptoms of their power from infancy. But she discarded that idea after going to the doctor.

In the end, it seemed that it was simply his way of acting, a peculiar manner.

At lunchtime, Izuku ate calmly as always. His mother, on the other hand, watched him with concern."I-Izuku, son," she murmured.

He only moved his head in response, continuing with his plate.

"About today, you told me not to worry about Bakugo, and that you wanted to go to the doctor to check your quirk. What's the reason?"

Upon hearing her, Izuku stopped what he was doing, and for the first time, almost exciting Inko, he placed his gaze on her, though without looking directly into her eyes.

"Bakugo was bothering another child. I crossed paths with him right when he tried to bother me. That's when my quirk awakened," he said while a small mass of water appeared above his hand when he raised it.

Surprising Inko so much that she even opened her mouth in shock.

"Izuku, that's incredible! Why didn't you tell me as soon as you got home?" she replied.

Izuku only shrugged indifferently, not giving it any importance. "I just forgot," he commented.

Although it was clearly a lie, and his mother knew it, since Izuku never forgot anything. Inko had even thought that his power would be intelligence, but apparently not.

"Tomorrow we'll go to the doctor, does that sound good?" she asked, ignoring Izuku's extremely indifferent behavior.

The latter only nodded, continuing with his meal.

The next morning, both of them could be seen in the doctor's waiting room. There were several children also waiting their turn to see what type of quirks they had. All of them excited solely to become heroes like Japan's number one, All Might.

Inko glanced sideways at her son, who was quiet, waiting in silence.

"Izuku, don't you want to be a hero?" she asked, hoping that at least her son would share something normal with the others.

"Hmm, I don't know," he said instantly. "If I did, it would be for the money, so I can have a life worthy of what I deserve."

Inko's last hopes vanished with that last part. Now her son wanted to be rich…

Hours passed, and several of the children who were there had already left, all excited about their powers.

But to Izuku, they were useless powers. The power to stretch your fingers? To have a bird's head? How were those supposed to be useful?

"Midoriya Izuku?" the doctor said, coming out of the room, receiving Inko's quick response.

"Yes! We're here," she answered, taking the child's hand and entering the office.

Once inside, Inko settled her son onto a small examination bed while the doctor read some papers. He was a large man, with dark hair and somewhat overweight.

"You've come to check the boy's quirk, correct?" he asked to be sure while reading the document Inko gave him.

"Yes. Yesterday my little Izuku awakened his power."

The doctor simply nodded several times, thus beginning to analyze Izuku. It took about half an hour to finish.

"Yes… the X-ray came out fine, although…"

"Is something wrong, doctor?" she asked worriedly.

"Here it says that you are the only one taking care of the child. Could you tell me what quirk your husband had?"

Inko answered him willingly, explaining that her husband had a quirk that allowed him to breathe fire.

"I see… your son has a water quirk, but apparently it's a new one… there's nothing like it registered in the records," he said while giving the computer one last look.

Inko glanced sideways at Izuku, who did not seem to care about what they were talking about. "Is that bad?"

"No, rest assured. It is most likely due to a fusion of your quirks and those of his grandparents and so on. Do you have any idea what name you want to give it?" he commented.

Inko asked her son what name he wanted for the new quirk he had, but the latter said he didn't care, that as long as it was called water manipulation, that was enough.

At the end of the consultation, the doctor asked only Inko, without the child hearing, about his attitude, since he always kept his gaze away from anyone.

She explained that it was simply Izuku's way, that he never looked anyone in the eyes, not even her, his mother. She had already taken him to different doctors, but none knew if it was caused by something.

In the end, mother and son were walking back toward their home. Inko was happy because her son had a quirk—it would be terrible if he didn't have one, not because she wouldn't support him, but because she knew perfectly well how the quirkless were treated.

"Izu, do you want to go get some ice cream? To celebrate your new quirk."

"Okay."

Inko smiled at that. At least he didn't refuse.
