Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – Fractured Thread

The journey back through the forest was quieter than before. Not peaceful — just tense.

Aria kept her breathing steady as the silver threads connecting her to the four alphas pulsed gently beneath her skin. After the trap, the bond still felt slightly strained, like a rope pulled too tight.

Darius walked ahead despite the injury to his arm. He refused to slow down.

Kaelen noticed Aria's gaze lingering on him.

"He will recover," Kaelen said quietly. "But you must stop carrying the mistake. The bond reacts to your emotions."

Aria nodded, though the guilt still sat heavily in her chest.

Then something changed.

A sharp pulse exploded through the Nexus.

Aria gasped and stumbled.

The threads inside her mind flashed violently — three glowing steady, but one flickered wildly, like a dying flame.

Pain shot through her chest.

"Stop!" Lucian said instantly.

Everyone froze.

Aria clutched her collarbone where the mark burned. The unstable thread lashed painfully against her awareness.

Riven growled low in his throat.

At first Aria thought it was anger.

Then she realized something was wrong.

Riven's breathing had turned uneven. His eyes glowed brighter than usual, the silver edge of his wolf pushing dangerously close to the surface.

"Riven," Darius said sharply.

Riven didn't answer.

The thread between him and Aria twisted violently, pulling like something unseen was tugging it apart.

Aria winced. "The bond… it's unstable."

Kaelen stepped forward immediately, his expression turning serious.

"That should not be possible."

Lucian crouched beside Riven, studying him carefully. "His energy is fluctuating."

Riven's jaw tightened as if he were fighting something inside himself.

"I'm fine," he muttered.

But the words sounded forced.

The silver thread snapped sharply against Aria's senses again, sending another wave of pain through her chest.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed.

"This is not natural interference."

Darius looked toward the dark forest line beyond their territory.

"Varik."

Aria felt cold realization settle in her stomach.

"He's touching the Nexus," she whispered.

Lucian's voice was calm, but grim. "Which means he understands it."

Riven suddenly staggered a step back.

For a moment his control slipped — his claws extending slightly, his wolf pushing forward with dangerous intensity.

Aria felt the thread pull harder.

Not breaking.

But destabilizing.

Kaelen moved quickly, placing a firm hand on Riven's shoulder.

"Focus," he ordered.

Riven closed his eyes, breathing slowly as he forced the wolf back.

After a few tense seconds, the silver thread steadied slightly — though it still flickered weakly.

Aria exhaled shakily.

"He's testing the bond itself," she said.

Darius's expression darkened.

"Then this isn't just about territory anymore."

Kaelen nodded slowly.

"No," he said. "It is about the Nexus."

Lucian rose to his feet, his gaze distant as if calculating possibilities.

"If Varik can destabilize even one thread…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Because they all understood the implication.

The Nexus was the foundation of their strength.

If one bond fractured, the entire balance could collapse.

Riven opened his eyes again, steady but still tense.

"He wants us to turn on each other," he said quietly.

Kaelen's gaze shifted to Aria.

"Which means we cannot allow doubt to enter the bond."

Aria nodded, though the pain in her chest had not completely faded.

Far beyond the forest, unseen in the darkness, Varik watched the territory from the ridge.

A faint smile touched his lips.

The Nexus had begun to move.

And now he knew exactly where it was weakest.
