Chapter 100 - Chapter 100. The Folder

[2 Weeks, 5 Days Post-Coma]

The morning air was a biting, crystalline blue, the kind of cold that seemed to sharpen the world into jagged edges. Inside the cab of Ethan's truck, the heater was working overtime, blowing a dry, artificial warmth that smelled of old upholstery and the faint, lingering scent of the cedarwood cologne Ethan had been wearing when he held her the night before.

Annie sat in the passenger seat, her body still humming with the memory of the observatory- the velvet blanket, the weight of his body, the way he had whispered her name like a sacred vow. She felt grounded, whole, and for the first time in nine months, truly safe.

Then she saw the corner of the folder.

It was shoved deep under the passenger seat, a thick, manila tongue licking out from the shadows. She reached down, thinking it was a stray sketchbook or perhaps a forgotten textbook from the months she'd lost. But as she pulled it into the light, the weight of it felt wrong. It felt heavy- dense with the kind of gravity that pulls stars into black holes.

She opened the cover.

The first thing that spilled onto her lap was a high-resolution forensic photograph of the silver SUV. It wasn't just a car anymore- it was a mangled beast of chrome and steel, its grill stained with a dark, rusted brown that Annie knew, with a sickening jolt, was her own blood. Her breath hitched, catching in a throat that suddenly felt like it was filled with dry sand.

She began to flip through the pages, her fingers trembling so violently the paper rattled. This wasn't a school folder. It was a dossier. A chronicle of a murder attempt.

The first document was a photocopy of her father's life insurance policy. Annie's eyes blurred as she read the highlighted sections.

"In the event of the policyholder's death, the total sum of $4.5 million shall be awarded to the primary beneficiary, Annie Lilah Combs.. In the event that the primary beneficiary is deceased or permanently incapacitated, the total sum shall default to the secondary beneficiary: Margaret Combs."

The words felt like shards of ice. Margaret hadn't just wanted her gone- she had been waiting for a payday. The "accident" wasn't a tragedy, it was a business transaction. If Annie had died on that road, and Dylan had followed from "grief" or "accidental overdose" a few months later, Margaret would have been the wealthiest widow in LakeVille.

Annie turned the page and felt the air leave her lungs. It was a series of surveillance photos. In them, Margaret was standing in the gravel lot of a house on the other side of town. She wasn't alone. She was wrapped in the arms of a man with a broad chest and a jagged, familiar jawline.

Brandon.

Beside the photo, Ethan had scrawled a note in his aggressive, sharp handwriting: Brandon Miller. Margaret's lover for 6+ years. DNA results pending, but the resemblance is undeniable. Brandon is Kyson's biological father.

The world tilted. Margaret hadn't just been cheating; she had been living a double life. Kyson, He was the son of the man who had been waiting in the dark with a silver SUV.

The next section of the folder contained transcripts of text messages and bank transfers.

Margaret had been funneling small amounts of "household expenses" to an offshore account linked to Vanessa.

Vanessa hadn't just been a high school bully. She had been a hired hand. Her job was to systematically break Annie down, to make her "suicide attempt" believable to the town.

Annie read the messages with a mounting sense of horror.

Vanessa to Margaret: "She's a mess. Peggy slapped her today. Everyone thinks she's losing it. We're ready for the bridge."

The "suicide attempt" on the bridge- the one the police had whispered about while she was in a coma, had been faked. Margaret had hoped Annie would jump the first time. When she didn't, when she kept fighting, Margaret had called in the "cleanup crew." She had called Vanessa. And when she came back, she called Brandon.

There was a handwritten statement at the back, signed by Kyson. It was raw, the ink smeared as if he'd been shaking when he wrote it.

"She told me Annie was faking it. She told me the grief for Lilah was a performance to turn Dylan against us. She said Annie wanted us out on the street. She told me to stay away, to let her fall apart so we could stay a family. I didn't know Brandon was my father. I didn't know he was the one in the car. I thought we were protecting our home. I was a fool."

Margaret had used Kyson as a shield, poisoning his mind so he wouldn't look too closely at the bruises on Annie's soul. She had groomed him to be a silent witness to a crime he didn't even know was happening.

The final page was a map. It had a route traced from LakeVille to a small coastal town in Florida. Tucked into the map was a printed flight itinerary for three people: Margaret, Brandon, and Kyson. The date was set for two months after Annie's "accident."

They were going to take Dylan's money, leave his broken family behind, and start over as the "true" family Margaret had always wanted.

Annie let the folder fall to her feet, the papers scattering across the floor mats. She felt cold- colder than the February morning, colder than the hospital bed. She looked at the silver anklet on her leg, the little paintbrush charm that had felt like a symbol of her new life. Now, it felt like a fragile anchor in a sea of blood.

The truck door opened.

Ethan climbed in, his face flushed from the cold, a small bag of breakfast sandwiches in his hand. He was smiling- that private, dimpled smile he only gave to her. But as his eyes dropped to the floor, to the scattered photos of Brandon and the insurance policy, the smile died.

The sandwiches hit the floorboards.

"Annie," he said, his voice a low, panicked rasp.

She looked up at him, her eyes wide and glassy, her face as pale as the snow on the horizon. "You knew," she whispered. "You knew all of it. The money. Brandon. Vanessa. You knew she tried to kill me for a paycheck."

Ethan reached out, his hands trembling as he tried to take hers, but she flinched away, pressing her back against the passenger door.

"I was going to tell you," Ethan choked out, the "detective" mask shattering to reveal the terrified boy underneath. "I swear to God, Annie, I was going to tell you today. I just... after last night... I wanted you to have one morning where you weren't the girl who was hunted. I wanted you to just be my girl."

"Hunted," Annie repeated, the word tasting like copper. "I wasn't an accident, Ethan. I was a target. My whole life here... it was a setup."

"It's over now," Ethan said, his voice turning fierce, his eyes burning with that protective rage she had seen in the hospital.

"They're gone. Brandon is in a cell. Margaret is being processed. Vanessa and Peggy- they're done. I spent every night I couldn't be with you- every night you were in a coma digging this up. I didn't do it for the police, Annie. I did it for you. So they could never touch you again."

He lunged across the center console, grabbing her shoulders and forcing her to look at him.

"Look at me, Annie. The war is over. We won."

Annie looked down at the photo of the silver SUV at her feet. She thought of the "product of love" Margaret had despised. She thought of Kyson, the brother who had been a victim of his own mother's malice. And then she looked at Ethan- the boy who had turned himself into a monster of the law just to keep her safe.

"It's not over," Annie whispered, a new, cold strength beginning to coil in her chest. "Take me to the station, Ethan. I want to see her. I want her to see that the 'product of love' is still standing."

Ethan stared at her, seeing the shift in her eyes. The fragile girl from the hospital was gone. In her place was a woman who had survived the unthinkable. He didn't argue. He shifted the truck into gear, his jaw set tight.

"Okay, Doll," he whispered. "Let's go finish it."

As the truck roared to life and pulled out of the driveway, Annie didn't look back at the house. She looked forward, her hand resting on the manila folder. The silence was gone. The truth was out. And LakeVille was about to find out exactly what happens when you try to break a girl who has a gargoyle watching over her.
