Chapter 269 - The Duty of Fear

Fear had no defined shape; it was, quite simply, an overwhelming presence.

Elizabeth sensed it long before it materialized. Suddenly, the air grew dense, almost solid. No flames erupted, no grotesque shadows unfurled, nor was there a single sound. There was only an ancient, wrenching pressure that seemed to rise from the very depths of the earth.

"Father..."

Before her, the darkness began to condense. First, a pair of stern eyes came to life; then the outline of a face, and finally an incomplete torso, formed from layers of shadow that seemed to remain cohesive through sheer, absolute will.

Astaroth. The Demon King.

Elizabeth gazed at him in silence. An eternity had passed since the last time their eyes had met.

"You have been gone too long," he stated, his voice reverberating through the void.

Elizabeth offered a faint smile, almost imperceptible.

"I know."

"The pact..."

"I know."

Astaroth fell silent. The sentence needed no conclusion; they both knew the clauses by heart. For generations, the demon bloodline had perpetuated its existence through that invisible alliance. Demons were not eternal beings; even the mightiest bodies eventually wore down beneath the weight of the centuries. Common mana sustained their vigor and expanded their dominion, but it was useless at stopping the final decline that eventually claimed them all.

There was only one remedy: divine mana. A force that did not belong to their plane.

That was why the pact had been forged. Elizabeth was destined to reincarnate again and again in whatever worlds the deities ordained. She would rise as the Demon Queen, sow chaos, and reap the terror of mortals. In their desperation, humanity would implore the heavens for favor, and in exchange for maintaining that cycle of devotion, the demons would receive the divine mana necessary to postpone their extinction.

A simple mechanism. Cruel. But undeniably effective.

Until today.

"You did not return," Astaroth said.

"No."

"And you will not."

Elizabeth slowly shook her head.

"No."

The aura of terror surrounding Astaroth stirred violently. For a moment, it seemed as though the pressure would crush everything around them, but the surge never came. The Demon King simply closed his eyes, exhausted.

"Then the pact has expired."

Elizabeth remained motionless. She had expected an explosion of rage, violent decrees, or a desperate attempt to force her into submission. Instead, Astaroth projected nothing but the weight of an endless weariness.

"Is that all?" she asked.

"What did you expect?"

"I don't know."

"I do." Astaroth opened his eyes, fixing them upon her. "You expected me to order you to return."

Elizabeth fell silent, unable to argue.

"I did so for far too long," he added.

That confession made her lower her gaze slightly.

"Every time you were reborn," the entity continued, "I made sure to remind you of your purpose. I shaped you and sent you onto whatever board the gods chose." His tone lost its usual harshness. "And every time you fell... we collected the reward."

Elizabeth pressed her lips tightly together.

"You don't have to put it that way."

"Why not? It is the brutal truth." Astaroth studied her carefully. "But I am also aware of everything you have given."

She raised her head. For the first time in millennia, Astaroth's features resembled those of a father more than those of the ruler of the underworld.

"You have fulfilled that contract more times than anyone should ever have been asked to."

She swallowed, feeling a knot tighten in her throat.

"Then understand me."

"I understand you." The answer came so quickly that it left her stunned. "And precisely because of that, I will not demand that you return." The aura of dread slowly began to dissipate. "But do not mistake my empathy for the absence of consequences."

Elizabeth frowned.

"The gods would cut off the flow of divine mana."

"That is correct."

"Then..."

"My people will begin to die."

The statement hung heavily between them. It did not sound like blackmail; it was simply the acknowledgment of an unavoidable fact.

Elizabeth closed her eyes, feeling the weight of the world upon her shoulders.

"I'm sorry."

Astaroth slowly shook his head.

"No. You don't have to apologize to me." He paused thoughtfully. "But now it is up to me to determine the course we take."

"What alternatives do you have left?"

Astaroth offered a faint, bitter smile.

"The usual ones." The pressure around him began to thicken once more. "Negotiate." His eyes hardened like steel. "Or fight."

Elizabeth understood immediately. If the gods accepted new terms, the species would survive. Otherwise, they would unleash an open war against the heavens.

"I don't want you to die because of me."

Astaroth watched her for several long seconds.

"Elizabeth," he said calmly, "it is not your duty to bear the salvation of an entire race simply because you were born bound to a bargain you never chose. You have done more than enough."

The silence that settled between them was strange: there was no formal forgiveness or reconciliation, yet it was imbued with a profound mutual understanding.

"What will you do now?" she finally asked.

Astaroth turned his gaze toward the surrounding shadows.

"I will speak with them first." He paused briefly. "Then I will determine how much I am willing to sacrifice."

Elizabeth let out a small, faded smile.

"You're still stubborn."

"I am the Demon King."

"That explains nothing."

Astaroth gave a sound resembling a muffled chuckle.

"I am also your father."

The suffocating pressure began to fade completely.

"Rest, Elizabeth."

She watched as his figure began to unravel in the air.

"Father."

Astaroth stopped for a moment before dissolving.

"Thank you."

There was no verbal response; only nothingness.

Elizabeth was left alone in the dimness. For the first time in centuries, tomorrow was not dictated by a divine contract. And although she had no idea what price her freedom would demand...

at last, it was entirely hers.
