Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 Briefing

"Step aside, go, shoo!" Laura signals Louis to separate him from Jeanne.

"But what if she falls?"

"Don't worry, I am laying her down now; she should be done in a bit."

The moment that Laura tries to put Jeanne in the ground, she comes awake with a yelp! "WOAH, I YIELD, I YIELD!"

As Jeanne wakes up, she trips up and falls to the ground with Laura, causing dust to rise up in the arena!

"OW, be careful! Also, lose some weight! Are you getting ready for a werepig transformation next, you damn dog!"

"Hey, that is a low blow, four-eyes. Maybe I should just beat you up for real this time! Take this!"

Jeanne partially morphs again, transforming closer to a werewolf, and then lies on top of Laura, placing her weight on her.

"Damn, dog! Get off me!"

Louis, seeing this, lets the intrusive thoughts in his mind win and goes right ahead, with a shout!

"Woohoo, dogpile!"

"WHO ARE YA CALLIN' DOG!"

"GET THE HELL OFF ME, YOU BASTARDS!"

"Haha, kids! Come on, order up." While laughing, Fuyuku casts some sort of magic, and white foam spews from a circle where her hand and mana thread connect.

"BLBRBLRLBLR"

The first to roll out of the mess is Jeanne back in usual form, then Laura and Louis scatter as well, and then they all clean themselves up.

"Everyone, attention now!" Fuyuko claps to call to attention; Laura and Jeanne stand up like two soldiers ready for orders, and Louis quickly takes notice and imitates.

"Very well! Right now, as we have warmed up and reorganized the team hierarchy, we are starting with a briefing. Jeanne and Laura, you two already know this, but pay attention as well. I will say this as if you guys were entering the course for the first time; you understand, right?" All of them nod in response.

"Good. So, to start, I would like to welcome you all to the sorcery technical school…"

"Come on, you don't have to do all of the intro spiel! Can you put it in 30 words or less?" Laura says, rushing the teacher.

"Hey, cut me off again and I will make you regret it!" Fuyuko scratches her head and thinks that she might as well go along with it. "… Not like even Louis is looking that green anyway, I guess. You seem to be remembering stuff bit by bit, so I will hurry. If you have a question, ask me or your friends."

"Anyhow, we have practical classes where you improve your techniques and team coordination, like this one, and theoretical classes that you take with other classmates that are doing the same subjects and mission assignments, which are very similar to what you actually get if you work in the field."

"Teacher, question!" Louis raises his hand calmly and asks.

"What is it?"

"Uh, how different is it from an actual mission? Like, who assigns those?"

"Ah, excellent question. Basically, we are in contact with multiple sorcery, alchemy, and aura firms, both private and public; we pick simple jobs they have there and serve them to students with assistance. The main difference is that you would have a school instructor or teacher supervising and assisting you as if you were working with them; it would be either an internal superior or you would figure it out on your own."

"Another question! Do we get paid?" Louis asks again.

"HAH, hopefully!" Jeanne comments.

"…Well, as Jeanne said, there are two situations in which you get paid: either the work is substantial and the money the firm or client pays is good, everyone gets paid. Sometimes if you perform very well, you get paid, but most of the time, the money would go to fund your studies. If you want to get paid more, there are other ways, though.

"Can you say more about that?"

"Sure! So, you can get a trainee position at one of the firms nearby, or you can work as a trainee inside of the school, which you did before with the doctor. You can take on additional missions posted on the board, which require teamwork that may differ from the team you usually work with in classes. However, you will need to reach out to an instructor, as the one for class missions may be more focused on the ones for the curriculum.

"Sorry, another question: you were talking about an instructor. Is that another teacher?"

"We are getting a bit sidetracked… Ah, whatever, the instructor is usually either a freelancer who works with various companies or someone from a company we have a deal with; schools themselves are not allowed to directly have licensed sorcerers with task execution rights. If you do something, it needs to have an instructor in between."

"Why is that?"

"Now we are really getting sidetracked; if we keep on this topic, I will need to get into politics, and then you will really get me fucked up… ah…" Fuyuko covers her mouth for a moment. "Eh, sorry, anyhow! We will talk about this another time, ok?"

Teacher Fuyuko seems to have gotten a bit upset at the topic, so Louis felt it would be better to drop it for now as well. "Yeah, uh, sorry…?"

"Hey, hey! Don't worry! It's good to ask! When I say we will talk about this later, I mean that we can do so at another time! We need to talk about your activities for the week!"

"This week is going to be pretty long; the day after tomorrow you guys will have your first mission of the month in earthday! So be sure to prepare well tomorrow; your mission will be hunting a few aura beasts on the roadside between the capital, and you will meet your new instructor on the day. As you guys have done it a few times before, I am leaving the organization to your captain, Jeanne!" Jeanne salutes in response.

Louis looks puzzled for a moment but then decides not to ask anything.

[I really need to figure out how to get a clock and a calendar as soon as possible, seems like over time more and more of my common sense may prove to be useless.]

"This should be all for now; let me check how much time we have left… 10:10…? Nice, we still have a few moments for body improvement, so let's do some workouts and finish for the day."

Laura groans and says, "Can't we just leave a bit earlier?"

Fuyuko snaps her fingers while pointing at Laura and responds, "No!"

After a little while, Fuyuko signals to finish off the class at 11:00. While Jeanne and Louis seem fine, Laura seems to be getting exhausted.

"Very well, guys, I will be going now. Any questions before I leave?"

Louis signals again. "Yes, uh, teacher, where should I go for class tomorrow?"

"You can come by the same time, same place. At the start of the week, you will mostly be either training here with me or other teachers, and the second part of the week it's in classes in the main building. Go to the administration office later and ask for the academy incomer package; you should find some useful stuff. Anything else?"

"I am fine now," Louis comments; the other two stay silent.

"Well then, see you guys later!" Teacher Fuyuko does a peace sign and seemingly turns to dust and vanishes, not leaving a speck.

"…Wow…" Louis stands amazed.

"Are you done gawking?" Laura asks while still huffing from the training.

"What? it was pretty cool…" Louis responds.

"Eh, I agree, but if you see it every couple of days, it just gets a bit silly. Especially when you figure out she does that just to show off just outside the door and then just walks normally; it's not like it's even faster than walking anyway..." Jeanne adds to the topic.

"Eh…? Uh, so what now?"

"How about we go to the cafeteria?" Jeanne smells into the air. "I think we are getting fish sandwiches with potatoes for today."

Louis somehow doesn't feel hungry yet but figures he might as well eat something. "Sure, let's go."

"I… I'll eat at my dorm…" Laura says while frowning.

"…? Why? I thought you wanted to talk with Louis about something?" Jeanne asks with a confused look.

"! You thought wrong, bye!"

"Ok? Bye, then." "Uh… Bye?" Both Louis and Jeanne bid farewell to Laura as she dashes away, stopping only to carefully open the door and leave.

"Do you… Know what is up with her?" Louis asks Jeanne once they are left alone.

"I have some ideas about that, but I think it's better if you pick up some time to talk with her tomorrow; if we are lucky, you both can sort this out before we go on the mission."

"That would be great, I think… Do you think you can give me some tips at least?"

"Well yeah, you still haven't remembered much, right?"

"Yeah…"

"Then there are some things that if I just went up and said would be pretty rude, but long story short, you guys got in a big fight before you went up the throne…"
