Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Epimedium

Wang Di's office sofa was a sectional set—a three-seater paired with two single-seaters. Whether intentional or not, after handing me the coffee, Wang Di naturally sat down right beside me.

"Xiao Liao, how did you handle things with your wife?" Wang Di got straight to the point as soon as she sat down.

"Thank you for your concern, Manager Wang. It's all been taken care of," I replied.

"Taken care of?" Wang Di looked at me with doubt, pausing for a long moment before speaking again. "As an outsider, I shouldn't say too much about such matters, but Xiao Liao, remember this: no matter when, don't shortchange yourself."

"I know," I nodded in agreement, just wanting to finish this perfunctory conversation and leave. The perfume scent in the office was too strange. I was trying my best to control myself, but with a beauty like Wang Di sitting so close, I couldn't help but have some physical reactions.

Unexpectedly, Wang Di seemed quite interested and continued, "At work, we are superior and subordinate, but in life, I'm a few years older than you. It wouldn't be out of place to call me 'sister.' As someone who's been through things, if you have any troubles, you can talk to your sister. I might not be able to help directly, but I can offer some advice."

"I'm really fine," I said, taking a sip of coffee to mask a barely noticeable awkwardness.

"If you don't want to talk, I won't press you. But whenever you feel upset, you can always come to your sister to vent. I'm willing to be your listener." Wang Di, seemingly intentional or not, slowly tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, adopting a delicate, feminine demeanor.

I quickly raised my coffee for another sip, clearing my dry throat in the process. I could see it now—this woman was probably interested in me.

If it were just for fun, I'd be more than willing. What I feared was getting entangled in messy emotions, which would bring enormous trouble.

Although, as a normal man, I really wanted to have her, I wouldn't make a move until I clearly understood her motives.

Wang Di's eyes were sharp; she saw through my awkwardness at a glance. I even suspected her faintly sorrowful eyes could see right through my dirty thoughts.

Wang Di stared at me and suddenly laughed. "Why are you so nervous? Do you think your sister is going to eat you?"

As she spoke, she inadvertently leaned closer to me. By now, our bodies were almost touching, and my fragile heart was racing.

"Let me ask you a very personal question: do you think your sister is pretty?" Wang Di suddenly lowered her voice.

"Huh?" I hadn't expected Wang Di to ask such a question and instinctively froze for a moment.

Wang Di looked at me as if she'd seen something amusing, covering her mouth and giggling. Then she continued, "Tell me the truth: do you think your sister is usually nosy and naggy?"

I awkwardly rubbed my nose and said, "I wouldn't put it that way. Manager Wang is just concerned about the company."

"I didn't realize you were so good with words," Wang Di laughed. Without waiting for me to speak, she went on, "As for me, I've had failures in love. I'm alone and don't know what else to do, so I pour all my energy into work. If I ever say anything harsh to you all, please don't take it to heart."

"Of course not. You're doing it for our own good. I understand," I said perfunctorily, while my real inner thought was: *Exactly! A woman in her prime, alone and lonely for so long—of course she'd end up like this.*

Actually, Wang Di was also a pitiful person, badly deceived by a man. I wouldn't say I sympathized, but at least I didn't dislike her at all.

"Thank you for understanding," Wang Di said, raising her coffee cup to clink against mine before taking a gentle sip.

It was a simple gesture, but very seductive. Wang Di was the kind of woman who exuded femininity in every move.

"By the way, Manager Wang, what brand of perfume do you use in your office? The scent is a bit strange," I couldn't help but ask. By now, the smell was really getting to me. If the person sitting beside me were my wife, I'd probably have already pinned her down.

"Perfume?" Wang Di was taken aback, then covered her mouth and laughed. "There's no perfume. I never use perfume."

"But I clearly smell a faint fragrance," I said, puzzled.

Wang Di smiled and pointed toward the window. Only then did I notice several potted plants there, about half a meter tall, with fluffy green leaves and a few pale yellow flowers blooming among them. At first glance, they resembled morning glories but were more delicate, with narrower petals.

"What you smell is the fragrance of these flowers. They're called *Xianlingpi*, a type of Chinese medicinal herb. After a past setback, I developed insomnia and gradually some neurasthenia. The scent of these flowers can help treat neurasthenia, so I keep a few pots," Wang Di explained.

So it was the flowers' fragrance. I nodded in sudden understanding. Wang Di suddenly turned to look at me, her expression very strange. "I almost forgot—these flowers have another name: Epimedium. They have a certain aphrodisiac effect. You're not…"

Wang Di drew out her words, her gaze growing even more peculiar.

"No, no! I just thought the scent was strange, so I asked," I hurriedly explained. This was something I absolutely could not admit.

Wang Di found my reaction hilarious, covering her mouth and giggling uncontrollably.

"Um, Manager Wang, if I may ask, keeping such flowers in the office—can you handle it?" I couldn't resist voicing my doubt.

Wang Di laughed for a long time before finally calming down. "I've gotten used to the scent. Besides, these flowers are excellent for treating neurasthenia, but their aphrodisiac effect is very mild. Unless someone already has improper thoughts, they're almost ineffective."

"I see," I nodded. Wang Di suddenly pointed at my nose, pretending to be serious. "Tell me the truth: do you have improper thoughts about your sister?"

"How could that be? No, absolutely not," I immediately denied.

Wang Di burst into laughter again. "I was just teasing. Look how scared you are."

I could feel my face burning hotly; it must have been redder than a monkey's bottom. Clearly, Wang Di had seen through me long ago. This woman was being very suggestive today, making me extremely awkward.

I quickly stood up. "Manager Wang, if there's nothing else, I should head back."

A flicker of disappointment flashed in Wang Di's eyes, but she hid it instantly and smiled. "Alright. Your job is mostly idle anyway. Feel free to come sit with me when you're free. I really enjoy talking with you."

"Sure, sure, definitely," I agreed incoherently and hurriedly left Wang Di's office.

Once out of Wang Di's office, I instantly felt a wave of relief. I wiped my forehead—it was covered in sweat. I didn't know why I was like this, but one thing was clear: that had been incredibly awkward.
