Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Resolving the Heart Knot

My mother-in-law half-squinted her eyes, unhurriedly waiting for Li Tao to thoroughly lick the bloodstains off her high heel before slowly withdrawing her foot.

"Speak. How do you want to die?" My mother-in-law's tone was flat, betraying no emotion whatsoever.

Li Tao, however, was scared half to death. Snot and tears streamed down his face as he repeatedly banged his head on the floor, kowtowing and begging for mercy.

My mother-in-law ignored him. Instead, she turned to look at me and asked, "How should we deal with him for you to truly vent your anger?"

I was momentarily stunned. I don't know what came over me, but my brain seemed to short-circuit, and the words blurted out: "Castrate him."

A flicker of surprise passed through my mother-in-law's eyes, then the corners of her mouth lifted into a smile. "Good idea."

Honestly, I regretted it the moment the words left my mouth. I'm not the type to hold petty grudges or be unforgiving when I have the upper hand. Li Tao had suffered enough torment tonight. While it wasn't enough to completely satisfy my anger, there really was no need to go that far.

But my mother-in-law gave me no chance to take it back. As soon as the words were spoken, she waved a hand towards the men behind her.

The men immediately understood. Ignoring Li Tao's wails and pleas, they dragged him into the suite's bathroom like a dead pig.

"Mom, this…" I felt a pang of softness and intended to plead for leniency.

My mother-in-law, however, cut me off with a wave of her hand. She stood up directly and walked towards the door, saying, "Let's go. Nannan is still waiting at home."

With that, she led the way out. I knew my mother-in-law had made up her mind; the situation was irreversible. The inhuman, blood-curdling screams coming from the bathroom made my hair stand on end. I didn't want to stay a minute longer in this place, so I hurried out the door, following in my mother-in-law's footsteps.

I didn't walk beside her, just obediently trailed behind her.

The corridor in the dead of night was eerily quiet. Only the rhythmic *click-clack* of my mother-in-law's high heels echoed incessantly.

Watching her sexy and upright figure, a wave of trepidation washed over me. This was the first time in the several years I'd known my mother-in-law that I felt this way.

Although I had always heard about how formidable my mother-in-law was, I had never taken it to heart because she had never shown her domineering side in front of us. But tonight, I witnessed firsthand how terrifying this woman could be when she was ruthless.

A woman who could start from scratch and stand at the pinnacle of the city's business world in just a few short years must possess countless methods I couldn't even imagine. What I saw tonight was probably just the tip of the iceberg.

I started my second-hand Haval from the parking lot and carefully pulled up beside my mother-in-law. She didn't show the slightest disdain, directly opened the door, and sat in the passenger seat.

I took several deep breaths, adjusted my breathing, and then drove onto the road.

"What are you nervous about? Scared?" my mother-in-law suddenly asked.

"No, Mom. I just feel the punishment was a bit too harsh," I hurriedly explained.

My mother-in-law smiled slightly. "This should have been something you, as the husband, handled. Instead, I, the mother, had to do it. How long are you going to make me worry about you two?"

I was momentarily speechless. What my mother-in-law said seemed right.

"Can we consider this matter closed?" my mother-in-law asked.

I nodded. "Mom, actually, this isn't Nannan's fault. She's the victim. I can understand her."

"It's good that you think that way. What era is this? Why cling to such outdated notions of chastity? To put it bluntly, no matter who Nannan sleeps with outside, or which woman you play around with, as long as you two can accept each other, what's the big deal? The key is whether you two can come to terms with it yourselves," my mother-in-law said.

I was utterly dumbfounded by my mother-in-law's remarks. My hand involuntarily trembled, causing the car to swerve.

I hurriedly steadied my mind and managed to stabilize the vehicle.

My mother-in-law covered her mouth and giggled. "You young people aren't as open-minded as an old lady like me."

"Mom, then how many men have *you* slept with?"

As soon as the words left my mouth, I wished I could slap myself several times. I really didn't know what was wrong with me tonight. My brain kept short-circuiting, and I spoke without thinking. What son-in-law asks his mother-in-law such a question?

To my surprise, my mother-in-law wasn't angry at all. She laughed and said, "There are far too few men who catch my eye. But you're one of them. Otherwise, how could I have married Nannan to you?"

"I'm curious too. You're such an outstanding, strong woman. Logically, you must have met many excellent, talented men. How did you end up choosing an ordinary person like me as your son-in-law?" I voiced the confusion I'd harbored for years.

"Feeling," my mother-in-law answered with just two ambiguous words.

"Feeling? What kind of feeling?" I asked, puzzled.

My mother-in-law suddenly gave me a playful wink, covered her mouth, and laughed. "An indescribable feeling. Mainly, I met you too late. Otherwise, I would have married you myself. Hahaha."

My mother-in-law's words nearly made me spit blood. This mother-in-law of mine was intimidating when ruthless, and utterly overwhelming when being this fiery.

So, I dared not engage further and obediently shut up and focused on driving.

It was past 1 a.m. when we got home. My wife was still awake, waiting for us in the living room.

As soon as we entered, my wife hurried over. She first glanced curiously at my mother-in-law's attire, then asked, "Mom, honey, where did you go?"

My mother-in-law smiled and said, "Helped your husband resolve a knot in his heart."

My wife looked at me, puzzled. But I knew we absolutely couldn't let my wife know about tonight's events. I had already prepared an explanation on the way back. So, I explained, "Mom has a very capable friend who's a psychologist. They gave me some counseling."

"Psychological counseling needs to happen in the middle of the night?" my wife asked, still confused.

"Mom's friend is very busy. They're leaving tomorrow, so Mom arranged it overnight," I prevaricated.

While we were talking, my mother-in-law had already changed her shoes. She stretched and said, "It's late. Stay here tonight. Hurry up and get some rest."

I agreed and then led my wife back to the bedroom. We washed up, changed, and prepared to sleep.

Under the dim lamplight, I held my wife in bed. She leaned against my shoulder, her large, sparkling eyes blinking at me, looking like she had something to say but was holding back.

I knew exactly what my wife was thinking. I reached out and ruffled her beautiful hair, forcing a smile as I said gently, "Alright, this matter is behind us now. No one is allowed to bring it up again."

My wife's eyes welled up with tears. She threw herself into my arms and whispered, "Husband, I'm sorry."

"Silly, what are you apologizing for? How could I bear to blame you?" I replied to my wife.

"The more you don't blame me, the more guilty I feel. Husband, I will definitely make it up to you," my wife's voice was soft but firm.

I didn't say anything more, just gently stroked my wife's back. That night, we fell asleep ju

st like that, holding each other, very peacefully.
