Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 – “The Boardroom Trap”

POV: Lena Carter

The early morning light filtered through the tall glass windows of Blackwood Corporation, casting long shadows across the marble floors. Lena Carter's heels clicked sharply as she strode through the lobby, each step echoing like a heartbeat of determination. Today, she reminded herself, was not about fear or hesitation—it was about strategy. She had spent the last week absorbing every word of the inheritance clauses, every loophole Victor Hale thought she hadn't noticed. In reality, she had memorized them all, a mental map of every hidden trap and backdoor.

Her phone buzzed in her hand. Adrian's voice came through, calm, precise, yet carrying a subtle edge she could feel even over the line.

"Lena, the board meeting starts at ten. Victor will be presenting."

Lena inhaled, steadying herself. "I'll be there," she said, her voice firm, unshaken. She hung up, the hum of the city below reminding her that she was stepping into a battlefield disguised as a corporate office.

Victor Hale was not just a man; he was a calculated storm. Every move he made in that room would be precise, designed to test her, humiliate her, or make her stumble. And yet, for the first time, Lena didn't feel small. She felt like a student ready for a final exam she had studied for obsessively. She was prepared.

The boardroom doors opened, and the room fell into a hush. Executives in expensive suits whispered and exchanged glances, as if they could smell the tension in the air. Victor Hale sat at the head of the table, his steel-gray eyes scanning every face. Then, they landed on hers. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk tugged at his lips. Predator. Lena met his gaze without flinching. She had learned early that fear was a currency she refused to spend.

"Good morning, everyone," Victor began, his tone silky, almost harmless. "Today, we'll review discrepancies in our quarterly assets."

His words were precise, harmless-sounding, but Lena knew better. She had already traced the path of the fabricated documents he would present, anticipating every manipulation. As he spread out the report, Lena silently countered each claim in her mind. Every falsified entry, every misleading footnote—she had an answer ready.

Adrian's eyes rested on her across the table, subtle tension in his posture. A hand brushed hers under the table, a silent gesture of reassurance, a reminder that she wasn't entirely alone in this war of numbers and influence.

Victor turned toward her, the room shrinking under the weight of his stare. "Mrs. Blackwood, care to explain these discrepancies?"

Lena lifted her chin, projecting calm authority. "Yes," she said, voice steady. "The report you prepared ignores the adjustments outlined in the revised inheritance audit. When those corrections are applied, the figures are accurate and fully compliant."

A murmur ran through the room. Victor's smirk faltered slightly, just enough to reveal that he had not anticipated her confidence. Adrian's presence radiated power, silent but absolute. Lena felt a thrill unlike anything she had experienced before. This was more than survival—it was mastery, control, and a little quiet revenge.

The meeting ended with the executives exchanging impressed whispers, and Lena left the boardroom with her head held high. But the tension didn't end there. As she returned to her office, a soft voice behind her made her freeze.

"Well, well. The contract wife actually survived another board meeting."

Lena turned slowly. Caitlyn Monroe stood there, perfect in every way—blonde hair gleaming, designer dress clinging just enough to remind the world of her privilege, eyes sparkling with malice.

"I told you before," Lena said calmly, refusing to let fear creep into her voice, "I don't play by your rules."

Caitlyn laughed, a sound sharp enough to cut glass. "Rules? Sweetheart, this is my city, my empire. And you're trespassing."

Lena's lips curved into a faint, confident smile. "I'm not trespassing. I'm learning."

Caitlyn's gaze hardened, but before she could reply, Lena stepped past her, heading to her office. There, she reviewed the inheritance documents one last time, running calculations and confirming contingencies. With every line she studied, she realized her leverage was growing. Victor may have thought he controlled the boardroom, but Lena's knowledge of the legal clauses gave her unseen power—and Caitlyn's social games could be countered if she stayed smart and cautious.

Hours later, Lena sat at her desk, reviewing the day's events. A notification blinked on her phone, making her pulse quicken:

UNKNOWN: "Victor knows you countered his plan. He will escalate tonight. Be ready."

Her lips curved into a small, determined smile. Danger was not new to her. But now, it had become thrilling—a language she had learned to speak fluently. She wasn't scared. She was ready.

POV: Victor Hale

Victor poured himself a glass of whiskey, the city lights sparkling behind him. Lena Carter had outmaneuvered him in the boardroom, and the sting of it only made him sharper.

She thinks she understands the rules. But she hasn't seen the real game.

His eyes darkened. The next move would be personal—and calculated.
