Chapter 49 - Spirit Devourer

[Power of Belief: I'z Finkin'!]

Origin: Altar of Gork and Mork

Quality: Pale Gold

Category: Scroll

Durability: Automatically shatters after use (Special scroll-type item, one-time consumable)

Effect: Utilizes the Waaagh! field to distort reality, producing an effect similar to a "Wishing Machine."

Rating: 890 (Note: Pale Gold equipment ratings range from 500 to 1000; the higher the rating, the more precious the item.)

Description: Think big and think bold. As for whether it can be done, leave it to us, lad.

— From Gork and Mork.

It was bold and generous, but Kenmyo Isayama found himself caught between laughter and tears when he spotted a line of extremely tiny text at the very bottom, nearly invisible to the naked eye:

"Don't make it too hard on us, though. We ain't actual miracle machines."

Kenmyo couldn't help but feel that Gork and Mork's message felt like a shady merchant's pre-sale advertisement—shouting about "massive discounts" only to start quoting "final right of interpretation" once the money was spent.

Ordinarily, the "Power of Belief" meant that the more Orks believed in something, the more likely it was to become true. However, this scroll bypassed the need for a crowd of believers and placed a ready-made "Waaagh!" field directly in front of Kenmyo.

[Would you like to use this scroll?]

Kenmyo placed his hand on the scroll, projecting his desires onto it, and clicked "Use."

He waited in a stalemate for a while.

"As I thought, nothing's happening?"

Kenmyo shook his head helplessly. He had just wished to be turned into an Alpha-grade Psyker.

It was wishful thinking, to say the least. Alpha-grade Psykers are among the most terrifying enemies of the Imperium of Man; their basic attacks can crack planets, they can traverse multiple star systems at will, and their full power can tear the fabric of the universe.

Sensing a wave of dissatisfaction and a warning ripple from the scroll, Kenmyo smiled apologetically. He placed his hand back on it, this time channeling a more realistic intent.

This time, the scroll reacted, but it was weak—clearly lacking the necessary "oomph."

Just as Kenmyo was about to mutter, "What a useless piece of—," he felt his head get whacked twice, hard, from both the front and back, as if by a wooden club.

Two cold snorts echoed from the void. Suddenly, an additional, dense surge of Waaagh! energy erupted from thin air into the scroll, making the dim paper glow with vibrant, shimmering light.

With this new injection of divine energy, Kenmyo's desired effect finally stabilized. The scroll shattered into a streak of green light, flying into Kenmyo's chest and merging with his soul. In its place, a new talent appeared.

[Spirit Devourer: LV.1]

Effect 1: When a spell or attack hits a target, there is a 25% probability of absorbing the enemy's energy, restoring 1 to 8 points of Mana.

Effect 2: Upon killing a target, you permanently seize 0–6 points of Mana from the target's pool.

Note: Effect 2 can increase your maximum Mana by a limit of 50 points per natural day.

Seeing these two effects, Kenmyo suddenly felt that his head didn't hurt so much anymore. In fact, he wouldn't mind if the "Twin Brothers" whacked him a few more times if it meant rewards like this.

[Spirit Devourer] was incredibly potent. Effect 1 meant he could sustain himself during combat, while Effect 2 allowed him to permanently grow his Mana capacity by killing enemies.

The primary reason Kenmyo had avoided using psionic spells until now was his pathetic mana pool. Common psionic disciplines include Pyromancy, Biomancy, Telekinesis, Telepathy, Daemonology, Sanctic, and Divination. Kenmyo had currently unlocked Telekinesis. Because these spells required high Mana costs, any single cast would previously drain his entire bar.

With this new talent, Kenmyo now possessed two: [Psionic Affinity] (which refilled Mana upon an Intelligence stat increase) and [Spirit Devourer].

The latter made him want to head out into the middle of the night and find some "lucky" Cursed Spirits to "have a chat" with. But before that, there were three more things to handle.

Skill: [Soul of the Mek]

Grade: Tier 1

Description: There's a bunch of lads born with technical gubbinz in their noggins. These guys are in charge of buildin' all sorts of flashy, loud Ork gear.

This was straightforward: Kenmyo now had the innate technical knowledge of the Mekboyz. He could envision various war machines in his mind. However, to actually build them, he had to use Mana to generate a Waaagh! field; only within that field would scrap metal transform into the shape he desired.

Currently Unlocked: Shoota (Ork Assault Rifle)

[Shoota]

Materials: 3kg Steel, Wood...

Mana Cost: 500 points

Production Time: 3 hours

Quality: Iron

Power: 10–100

Description: The most popular Ork projectile weapon. There is no standard design; these crude weapons are mostly hand-crafted by Mekboyz.

"One shoota, two shootas, put holes in da enemies."

As the [Soul of the Mek] skill leveled up, more advanced Ork machinery would become available, such as Stompas and Gargants. Kenmyo had already experienced the thrill of firing large-caliber cannons, and he knew firearms were a man's true romance. However, with only 250 Mana, he couldn't actually build a Shoota yet and could only look at the blueprint longingly.

Next was a special type of equipment called a Title.

[Tyranid Slaughterer]

Origin: Octarius

Quality: Special

Category: Title

Effect 1: Strength +3, Mana +100.

Effect 2: Tyranids feel an innate dread of you; they will struggle to approach you (Ineffective against high-level Tyranid organisms).

Effect 3: Damage dealt to Tyranid monsters increased by 35%.

Description: You are the killer whose name makes the swarm tremble. This is your reward.

Note: Only one title can be equipped at a time.

This title was excellent. Aside from the stat boosts, Effect 2 made Kenmyo wonder if he'd finally be immune to mosquito bites in the summer. Before he had psionic powers, he had been tormented by mosquitoes and loathed them deeply.

[Would you like to equip?]

Kenmyo clicked equip. The +3 Strength boost brought his Strength to 12 (9+3), and his Mana increased to 250 (150+100). As he felt the strength surging within him, a smile appeared on his face. Growing stronger was a truly satisfying experience.

As for the final item...
