Chapter 1 - Betrayed

I was panting heavily, finding it hard to maintain stable breathing. I took in air as if every time was the last. Everything would have been fine if Dreg hadn't spoiled the plan. Was it so hard for him to just follow the plan?!

It was a Saturday when I was approached by a scientist, who preferred to stay anonymous, that wanted us to rob S.K.Y Corp of their new developed AI technology that he claimed to have been robbed from him. Honestly, even if he just wanted to steal it for his personal gains, I would have still done it. That is the mentality of my profession. In the art of theft, 'just steal what you are told to steal and retrieve your money' is the governing rule.

I had to look for a companion and Dreg was my best choice as we had been on various quests together and we could be called acquaintances—only if I had known! I used every information provided by the client and breaking in was as easy as taking cold water on a hot summer day. Being specialists in our job, all devices used were up to date and expensive to say the least.

I hacked into the computer system of S.K.Y Corp and I shut it down since I was the technical guy, whereas Dreg dealt with the guards as he was the physical guy. The rest of the mission was as easy as damn—then the time for the main part of the mission. It was there that Dreg turned against me, he wanted the chip for himself and that's how I got to where I am now.

I stopped and gasped for breath, I checked my hand and noticed the golden chip that lay in my hand. Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me, on turning I got to see Dreg, looking at me like a prey in his grasped.

"Salus!" he bellowed, "let's put an end to this cat and mouse game."

"You know you're physically weaker than me and you can't keep on like this for long!"

"How much were you paid to betray me?" I angrily snapped.

"No need to be angry young thief, our employer lacked enough money so he promised to give me a bigger share if I took the chip," he sarcastically replied.

"Aren't you supposed to also get rid of me, you foul son of a b*tch!" I yelled.

"Pretty wise, aren't you? But not wise enough to escape from me!" Dreg sadistically says.

He stood beside me with his gun pointing at my glabella as he hysterically laughed at my stupidity for giving away myself. In a bid to save myself, I hit the hilt of his gun and it slipped right into my hand. It was now my turn to threaten him.

Dreg suddenly begins laughing as I feel my body giving in. I immediately clutched the back of my neck as I felt blood seeping through. Dreg laughed heartily as he lifted a sharp knife from his sleeves and showed it to me. The hand which held the chip stayed at my neck as an unexpected event occurred.
