Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 : The Fragrance of Scales

The morning air outside the Demon Realm capital carried a strange softness to it, almost deceptively peaceful. Bai Chenxi and Bai Yuchen had not traveled alone since their transformation into half-demons, and though their strength was still far from formidable, it was enough to handle ordinary threats. They had learned small techniques—basic aura concealment, spiritual circulation control, and short-range burst movement. Nothing extraordinary. But enough to survive.

"Let's not wander too far," Yuchen muttered, hands tucked into his sleeves as they walked along the stone path leading toward the nearby city of Linyu.

Chenxi smiled faintly. "You're the one who said we should explore."

"That doesn't mean blindly."

The city gates came into view, bustling with merchants, minor cultivators, and wandering demons disguised in human form. The brothers blended in easily. They had learned how to suppress the more obvious signs of their demonic aura, though it still flickered faintly beneath the surface like heat under skin.

They didn't notice when the wind shifted.

It came with fragrance.

Sweet. Warm. Floral.

Not overpowering.

Just enough to linger.

A group of women stood ahead along the main street, laughing softly as they browsed silk fabrics. They were breathtaking—long dark hair, luminous skin, eyes shaped like crescent moons. Their movements were graceful, almost liquid.

Chenxi slowed.

"Yuchen… do you smell that?"

Yuchen frowned slightly. "Yeah."

One of the women glanced back over her shoulder. Their eyes met.

And she smiled.

It was subtle.

Intentional.

Chenxi's breath caught.

Another woman stepped closer, brushing past him lightly as if by accident. Her fingers grazed his wrist. A cool sensation spread up his arm.

"Forgive us," she said softly, voice like flowing water. "We didn't mean to block your path."

Yuchen felt something prickle at the back of his mind. His training stirred instinctively, aura tightening in defense. But the fragrance in the air thickened.

More women emerged.

Laughing.

Encircling.

Their steps were too synchronized.

Too smooth.

Chenxi blinked slowly. The world seemed slightly blurred at the edges.

"Brother," Yuchen said sharply.

But Chenxi was already smiling faintly.

"It's fine… they're not hostile."

The woman who had touched him stepped closer again, fingers now resting lightly against his chest.

"You both look tired from travel," she murmured. "Our residence is nearby. Rest for a while."

Yuchen's vision swayed.

Something wasn't right.

His demonic core pulsed faintly in protest.

The scent wasn't merely fragrance.

It was poison laced with charm.

Snake venom refined into spiritual mist.

His mind fogged for a brief second—and in that second, he felt his legs move without command.

They were walking.

Following.

Through narrow alleyways.

Past crowded streets.

The city sounds faded.

Stone paths turned into forest trails.

And then the illusion shattered.

The trees were wrong.

Their trunks twisted unnaturally.

The air felt damp and heavy.

The women ahead no longer moved like humans. Their hips swayed in rhythmic, predatory arcs.

Yuchen's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

He forced his spiritual energy downward, activating the grounding technique Mo Zhu had drilled into them weeks ago. Focus breath. Stabilize pulse. Suppress external influence.

Pain lanced through his temples.

Good.

Pain meant clarity.

He bit the inside of his cheek until the metallic taste of blood spread across his tongue.

The fog cracked.

His vision sharpened.

And he saw it.

Faint, translucent scales glimmering along the women's necks.

Eyes narrowing vertically for a fraction of a second.

Snake Fairy Clan.

But not the one spoken of in old rumors.

This aura was different.

More primal.

More feral.

They led the brothers into a clearing surrounded by ancient trees. In the center stood a stone structure half-covered in vines. The air pulsed with concentrated yin energy.

Chenxi stepped forward willingly, gaze unfocused.

The women circled him.

One brushed her fingers through his hair.

Another traced a nail lightly along his jaw.

Their expressions changed.

Smiles sharpening.

Predatory.

"So strong already," one whispered.

"Half-demon blood," another breathed, eyes glowing faintly green. "Perfect nourishment."

Yuchen's stomach dropped.

They weren't trying to kill them.

They were harvesting.

Snake fairies fed on cultivated male spiritual energy, draining them slowly over time until nothing remained but husks. It was an ancient survival method, hidden deep within forbidden clan practices.

Chenxi swayed slightly.

"Chenxi," Yuchen called, forcing steadiness into his voice.

No response.

A woman's hand pressed against Chenxi's chest.

Green light flickered.

Yuchen saw spiritual threads begin to seep from his brother's body, drawn toward the woman's palm.

Rage surged.

His demonic core ignited.

The faint training they had undergone felt insignificant compared to the threat before them—but it was enough.

Yuchen stepped forward and slammed his palm against the ground, releasing a burst of demonic aura outward.

The shockwave wasn't powerful.

But it was disruptive.

The nearest fairy hissed sharply, her form flickering as her illusion faltered.

"Impudent," she snarled, voice no longer gentle.

Her legs dissolved into a massive coiling serpent tail.

The others followed.

Human skin peeling into scales.

Eyes glowing fully now.

Chenxi blinked slowly, still entranced as one serpent-woman wrapped her tail loosely around his waist.

Yuchen's heart pounded.

He couldn't fight all of them head-on.

There were at least eight.

Maybe more hiding.

He focused on the nearest one draining Chenxi's energy and lunged, channeling every ounce of demonic force into his fist.

The punch landed against her shoulder.

There was a crack.

She shrieked, recoiling backward.

The spiritual thread snapped.

Chenxi staggered but did not awaken.

"Take the stronger one first!" one of them hissed. "The other is unstable!"

Two serpent tails lashed toward Yuchen.

He ducked one.

The second struck his ribs, sending him skidding across the clearing.

Pain exploded through his side.

Breathing became sharp.

But the impact cleared the last of the charm from his system completely.

He rolled to his feet, eyes burning now with faint demonic red.

"You chose the wrong prey," he muttered.

He drew the short blade hidden beneath his sleeve—nothing special, just steel—but infused it with his aura.

One fairy lunged.

He sidestepped and slashed across her tail.

Black blood sprayed.

The others hesitated briefly.

They had expected docile prey.

Not resistance.

Yuchen used that hesitation.

He sprinted toward Chenxi, ignoring the sting in his ribs, and drove his blade into the ground between them, releasing a pulse of chaotic demonic energy outward.

The burst disrupted the formation circle etched faintly beneath Chenxi's feet.

Green light shattered.

The serpent wrapped around him screamed as backlash tore through her.

Chenxi collapsed forward.

Yuchen caught him.

"Brother, wake up!"

Chenxi's eyelids fluttered.

Still trapped.

Still partially enchanted.

The remaining snake fairies recoiled, regrouping along the edge of the clearing.

Their leader stepped forward—a taller woman, scales darker, aura heavier.

"You will regret this," she said coldly. "You cannot escape our forest."

Yuchen tightened his grip around Chenxi and lifted him over his shoulder.

He didn't respond.

He ran.

Branches whipped past his face.

The forest shifted unnaturally, trying to redirect him.

Illusions layered over reality.

But the charm no longer held him.

Behind them, furious hisses echoed.

The hunt had begun.

And Chenxi remained unconscious in his arms.
