Chapter 90 - Chapter 90: Constant Reversals, How Will It End?

Week after week passed as the second season of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion aired on television.

"Bring it on if you think you can stop me! If anyone can overcome my despair!"

"Foolish Lelouch, even the King's Power cannot defeat God."

"This isn't about victory or defeat, but about my wish! Yes, only now do I truly understand myself! God, gather the unconscious! Don't stop the march of time!"

"Impossible! I was supposed to be immortal, yet I'm being devoured by C's World?!"

"I am Lelouch vi Britannia, the 99th Britannian Emperor. That's right, I have returned from the depths of hell. Allow me to introduce my knight, Suzaku Kururugi. As a Knight of Rounds surpassing the original Knights of the Round Table, I grant him the title of Knight of Zero."

"This is unacceptable, Lelouch, and Lord Kururugi. Pulling such a stunt during an international live broadcast?"

"Is that so? Then let me be blunt—Acknowledge me!"

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"All hail Lelouch! All hail Lelouch!..."

Each chapter was packed with information and constant twists and turns.

First, it was revealed that Empress Marianne, Lelouch's mother, had indeed survived. She awakened within Anya, one of the Knights of the Round Table, and then, together with Anya, they sought out the Imperial Emperor.

Coincidentally, Lelouch and Suzaku had also tracked down the Emperor, both intent on killing him.

In the mysterious space where Lelouch had once confronted the Emperor—C's World—he faced the Emperor again. Suddenly, Marianne entered C's World, leaving Lelouch utterly shocked.

The truth behind the past was then revealed: Marianne's death had nothing to do with the Emperor. She and the Emperor were actually allies. The true killer was V.V., the leader of the Geass Order, and the motive stemmed from some complex entanglement between the three.

Marianne also possessed a Geass, one that continuously shifted between human hearts. However, her Geass only activated when her body approached death.

When she died years ago, the young Anya happened to be present at the scene, which is why Marianne had been residing within Anya all these years.

Once Marianne's consciousness surfaced, she could communicate telepathically with C.C. This explained why C.C. often appeared to be talking to herself—she was actually conversing with Marianne.

The Emperor had actually sent Lelouch and Nunnally to the Eleventh District to protect them.

Nunnally's blindness wasn't due to shock or psychological trauma; it was caused by the Emperor's Geass, a deliberate act to create evidence that would prevent V.V. from uncovering the truth.

When the truth was revealed, the Emperor and Marianne's plan was laid bare: to slay God, usurp His place, and create a world without lies.

Lelouch disagreed with this plan. Using his Geass, he commanded C's will, effectively using the King's Power to command God. What the Emperor deemed impossible, Lelouch achieved, resulting in both the Emperor and Marianne being consumed by C's World.

Afterward, Lelouch became the Imperial Emperor, bestowing the title of Knight of Zero upon Suzaku. Alongside Jeremiah and his loyal followers, they began wreaking havoc throughout the Empire.

Their actions seemed benevolent, yet many opposed them, including the Black Knights and the United Federation of Nations, both of which Lelouch had once helped establish.

Through meticulous planning, Lelouch successfully captured key members of the United Federation of Nations. However, before he could use these hostages to force their surrender, Second Prince Schneizel of the former Empire reappeared. He unleashed Freya, leveling the capital city to the ground.

The biggest twist came next: Nunnally was actually alive.

Learning from Schneizel that Lelouch was Zero, Nunnally publicly declared her allegiance to Schneizel, officially becoming Lelouch's enemy.

Lelouch was deeply shaken, but for the sake of the "Zero Requiem" he and Suzaku had planned, he persisted in opposing Nunnally.

Following this, Lelouch led the Imperial forces in a decisive battle against the combined forces of Schneizel and the Black Knights.

The battle was fierce, with neither side gaining a decisive advantage.

However, while the fighting raged outside, Lelouch successfully infiltrated Schneizel's base. Drawing on his understanding of Schneizel, he deceived him and used his King's Power to issue the command: "Serve Zero."

At the end of episode 24, Lelouch found Nunnally, who was holding the Freya controller and had been deceived by Schneizel.

To his astonishment, Nunnally, through sheer force of will, broke free from the power of her Geass. Her eyes regained their sight.

In the final moments of the episode, Nunnally looked directly at Lelouch and asked, "Brother, would you use Geass on me too?"

In terms of pacing, the final few episodes felt a bit rushed, and the sheer volume of information conveyed gave the impression of an overly rapid escalation of events.

Despite this, the overall content remained compelling.

The constant barrage of twists and turns sparked widespread discussion among viewers.

However, with only one episode left, the audience was left bewildered: How would the ending unfold?

The animation is titled Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Logically, the story should conclude with Lelouch's rebellion against the Britannian Empire, whether successful or not. Yet, Lelouch's control over the Empire wasn't achieved through his prior efforts. Instead, he murdered the former Emperor, crowned himself Emperor, and used Geass to subjugate the Empire's internal forces.

Now, his adversaries weren't the Empire itself, but the Black Knights he had once founded and the Second Prince Schneizel, the original heir to the throne, who refused to recognize him.

This was no longer a rebellion; it had become more akin to suppressing a rebellion.

By the 24th episode of the animation, the final battle was raging. Although the outcome remained undecided, Schneizel had already fallen under the control of Geass.

Nunnally still held the Freya controller, but without Geass and with her physical limitations, she stood no chance against Lelouch.

This meant Lelouch had victory in his grasp. He could now simply seize the Freya controller and order the Black Knights and Schneizel's remaining forces to surrender.

But would Lelouch's victory truly be the end of the story?

Rebellion, successful rebellion, suppression of all dissent, world domination, establishment of a new order, and then the curtain falls?

As a "power fantasy" anime, such an ending might seem natural. But it would be far too cliché.

Moreover, calling Code Geass a "power fantasy" anime is inaccurate. The first half of both seasons were indeed exhilarating, but the latter half was anything but. "The greatest power fantasy anime of the century" even became a running joke among fans.

Given the lack of satisfaction in the mid-to-late stages, a typical power fantasy ending would feel out of place.
