Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: The Hand of God

"If I relinquish ownership of this Death Note, its ownership will be returned to Rem, right?"

"That's correct. You've asked many times."

"Then give the Death Note to Ryuk. That will transfer ownership to him. Ryuk, drop the Death Note in the human world—here."

"Well, I suppose I can..."

"That means I'll have ownership again."

"After all that, we're back where we started."

"Perhaps. But it might come in handy someday. This was the first Death Note I obtained. Now, I'll return it to Ryuk and ask you to give it to Rem. Rem, give it to someone with social status and a strong desire for power, someone who would use it for their own selfish gain. I guarantee that way, Misa will be freed from her imprisonment."

The TV was showing the twenty-fourth episode of Death Note, featuring a flashback of the male lead, Yagami Light. It explained how he manipulated the ownership of the Death Note to ensure he could later recover his memories and regain full ownership of the notebook.

It was an incredibly complex maneuver, and precisely because of its complexity, many viewers were stunned. They never imagined such a scheme was possible.

When Misa Amane was captured earlier, many viewers couldn't help but sweat for the male lead.

Later, when he voluntarily surrendered to imprisonment and, after a period of confinement, relinquished ownership of the notebook, his actions further confused the audience.

Now, however, the viewers finally understood.

By abandoning ownership and losing related memories, then enduring a month or two of imprisonment, they ensured that the Death Note would remain in the hands of a carefully selected individual. This meant that even with Light and Misa imprisoned, the outside world would continue to see people dying of heart attacks. Eventually, no matter how suspicious L remained, he would have no choice but to release them.

Of course, L was inherently suspicious. Even though Light and Misa appeared innocent, Soichiro Yagami, Light's father, conducted one final test. Since they showed no signs of possessing Kira's abilities, they were finally released from custody.

This wasn't the end. L then produced a pair of handcuffs and shackled himself to the Male Lead, leaving him no opportunity to make any rash moves.

Though the Male Lead was furious, he was powerless. Having lost his memories, he didn't even consider himself Kira and had no intention of killing anyone. Instead, he actively investigated, determined to find and capture Kira himself.

Through their investigation, the Yotsuba Group came under suspicion.

With everyone's combined efforts, the new Kira was apprehended, and the Death Note and Shinigami Rem were exposed to the public for the first time.

When L obtained the Death Note, the Male Lead was right beside him. He took the notebook from L, intending to examine it out of curiosity. But upon touching it, his memories temporarily returned. Under L's nose, he retrieved a needle he had hidden in his watch and a fragment of the Death Note. He pricked his finger and used his blood to write the name of the captured new Kira on the notebook fragment.

Ownership of the Death Note returned to him, and his restored memories remained intact.

This move earned the audience's admiration, though many were puzzled. L had previously hypothesized that the Male Lead was Kira and capable of relinquishing the Death Note's power. If so, he would likely reclaim that power after his suspicions were cleared.

The current situation was exactly as L had hypothesized, which would once again raise suspicion against the Male Lead.

Moreover, with the Death Note and the Shinigami exposed, the Male Lead's trump card had been revealed. Wouldn't that mean he was finished?

As they pondered this, they quickly realized the Male Lead's brilliant maneuver didn't end there.

When he had previously given the Death Note to Rem, the Male Lead had instructed Ryuk to write two false rules in it:

"Any means used to damage or destroy the Death Note will render it unusable, and anyone who touches it will die."

"The user of this Death Note will die within 13 days of writing the final name if they fail to write another name and continue killing."

Since many people had touched the Death Note, the first rule prevented anyone from easily burning it. This ensured the Male Lead wouldn't lose ownership of the notebook again and suffer memory loss.

The second rule was even more ingenious. Both the Male Lead and Misa Amane had been imprisoned for over 50 days. If this rule were true, it would directly prove their innocence and their lack of connection to Kira.

It was truly a divine move.

Of course, someone as paranoid as L would naturally doubt these two rules. But Shinigami Rem, who was wholeheartedly devoted to Misa Amane and stood firmly by the Male Lead's side, was unwavering.

"Shinigami Rem, correct? The white one?"

"That's right."

"Are there any other Death Notes in the human world?"

"Well... there might be, or there might not be."

"If there are other Death Notes, do they all follow the same rules?"

"Yes, they all follow the same rules. There are many Death Notes in the Death God Realm, and their rules are identical. Even when given to humans, the rules don't change."

No one could have imagined that a Shinigami would lie to humans. Thus, after L's brief exchange with Rem, everyone except L was completely convinced of the Male Lead's innocence. They now believed that the Male Lead and Misa Amane were undoubtedly innocent.

Reluctantly, L had no choice but to unlock the handcuffs binding him and the Male Lead, setting them and Misa Amane free. However, only Misa Amane left; the Male Lead insisted on staying to continue his investigation.

As he bid farewell to Misa Amane, the Male Lead avoided the cameras and discreetly told her the location where he had previously buried the Death Note, instructing her to dig it up.

Misa Amane successfully dug up the box containing the Death Note. Inside, she found a letter from the Male Lead, asking if she remembered L's real name and instructing her to write it in the Death Note to eliminate him.

Logically, L should have been doomed this time. However, the Shinigami Eyes couldn't be turned on or off at will; they were always active. With so many names to memorize daily, Misa's memory wasn't as good as the Male Lead's. Moreover, she hadn't known at the time that this person was the L the Male Lead was desperately trying to eliminate, so she simply couldn't remember his real name.

After losing ownership of the Death Note, the Shinigami Eyes would also disappear. Misa had no choice but to trade half of her remaining lifespan with Ryuk, the Shinigami who had returned to the human world, for the Shinigami Eyes.

At the end of episode 24, Misa ran to find the Male Lead. Then, Rem noticed that half of her lifespan had disappeared again.

The preceding episodes had already been thrilling, but episode 24 saw a massive payoff of foreshadowing. Combined with the Male Lead's brilliant strategy, it left viewers in awe.

The Death Note animation was already popular, but after this episode aired, its popularity surged even further.
