Chapter 2 - The Scientific Witch

A young girl stood before a desk covered in myriads of scientific equipment.

Using her steady hands, mercury was quietly poured into a glass vial before the vial was placed upside down in a container of mercury. The vial was suspended just above the surface of the mercury by a thin layer of steel. The vial was carefully held so no air got in. Finally, the mercury began to level, reaching a balance with the outside air.

The girl, careful not to have her robes fall into the mercury, stepped back. A satisfied look plastered on her face.

"Interesting, air pressure does exist. I wonder if the majority of my other findings will stay the same, all things considered."

She carefully stepped away and looked outside the window in the room curiously, the morning light sparkling upon her silky white hair. All of a sudden, a door slants open.

"Are you ready to go to your first class? I hear somebody you know will be giving a lecture on magic, a pretty awesome witch~."

The speaker was a similarly white-haired man who was holding the door open. He donned a dark blue cloak, jet-black pants, a brown undershirt, and a dark blue witch hat. Interestingly, despite his clothing suggesting he was a mage, he still looked rather muscular.

The girl quickly walked over to a clothing stand and put on a dark black witch hat with a purple underside. She sighed, as if trying to hide the fact that she was deeply excited.

Together, they walked outside before getting into a jet-black carriage with no horses. As they got in, the carriage jolted and slowly entered the air before beginning to streak across the sky calmly, staying the same height throughout the journey, only showing a hint of instability when it was forced to move awkwardly to avoid birds.

Passing over countless valleys and mountains, they landed on a large flat segment of a gigantic, imposing castle. The bricks of said castle were all in pristine condition, giving it an otherworldly feeling of invulnerability to the elements.

As they landed, a blond man came over before helping them out of the carriage.

"Hi, Florian! Is that your daughter?"

The white-haired man courtly nodded, trying to maintain his mystique in case any students passed by.

"Yes, this is my daughter, Viviane, but I just call her Vivy."

He promptly patted his daughter on the shoulder lightly and moved to introduce them.

"This is William. He's the witch of castles. He's certainly a bit… Out there, but he's more bearable once you get to know him."

"How cold~! You know, you could at least do something like that behind my back~!"

William mock-pouted before snapping.

Thud.Thump.

After countless sounds reminiscent of moving around heavy luggage. The bricks began to layer themselves into a small pile, and a staircase opened in front of the trio. Before anyone else spoke, William chimed in

"Well, anyhow, you should get going, Florian, lest you miss the first lecture."

Viviane, having not opened her mouth until then, showed a sudden interest. Her eyes glimmered with curiosity, and she began patting all over the stone walls, as if trying to listen to the sound they made as she tapped them.

Florian, seemingly used to this, simply sighed and walked down the stairs, not stopping his daughter from expressing her curiosity. As if on cue, William also wandered away, disappearing into the labyrinth of stone.

After a small while, Viviane followed the numerous steps down, stopping after what felt like thirty or so stairs. A couple of deep breaths or so later, she continued making her way down to the bottom.

What greeted her was a giant archway of stone and brick. Through it, was what could only be described as an immensely oversized lecture hall. As she stepped in, numerous gazes peered towards her, probably for being almost late, though despite that she simply sat down and they cast their gazes elsewhere, towards the front.

A white-haired man walked to the middle of a raised platform and sat down on what seemed to be an odd mixture of a throne and an office chair. In front of him, a small, holo, neon white circle materialized in the air, which he poked a few times expectantly. And then—

Tap, Tap.

"Ahem… is this thing working?"

All of the students near Viviane began to cheer as they saw who took the stage.

At a flick of his wrist. A couple of bright, neon words glistened above his head.

'The Witch King grants you his audience'

Viviane awkwardly looked to the side. If any of the onlookers had cared enough to pay attention, they'd be shocked, for the man was the equivalent of a celebrity for some. Even more had heard of him only from his deeds that went into their history books. Though for her, that was just her dad, so it took away a lot of the mystique.

Then, Florian clasped his hands.

"Let's begin our first lecture, shall we?"
