Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Status Update

Back to the main topic.

After giving Xien a broad overview of the Dungeon's historical background, the half-elf—Eina—continued with practical basics: concepts like status parameters, levels, and excelia (great deeds), and how those terms relate to each other. Her explanation was meticulous, and it gave Xien a far more grounded understanding of what "being an adventurer" actually meant.

Watching the anime was one thing.

Actually becoming an adventurer was another—because the amount of knowledge you needed was far from small.

Levels and Adventurer Classes

Adventurer levels were displayed as Lv.1, Lv.2, and so on. Higher level meant stronger overall ability.

Adventurers were broadly divided into:

Lower-class adventurers:Lv.1 (roughly the average of half of Orario's adventurers).

Upper-class adventurers:Lv.2 and above, who, in addition to their basic parameters, also gained development abilities.

Upper-class adventurers were further categorized as:

Third-class adventurers:Lv.2

Second-class adventurers:Lv.3–4

First-class adventurers:Lv.5+

What Makes Up a Level: Basic Abilities + Great Deeds

An adventurer's growth had two major components:

Basic abilities (like proficiency)

Great deeds / excelia (more abstract—like "experience" in the mythic sense)

The five basic abilities were:

Strength

Endurance

Dexterity

Agility

Magic

These were recorded in the blessing (Falna) granted by the gods. Each stat ranged from 0 to 999, graded by letters I to S across ten tiers (e.g., I: 0–99 … A: 800–899 … S: 900–999).

Training and real combat raised these values—the more you trained a category, the more it improved.

Normally, 999 (S) was considered the ceiling, though in the original story Bell Cranel once broke past it.

Great Deeds (Excelia): The Requirement for Leveling Up

Then came the critical point:

Great deeds were what you needed to level up.

The term meant exactly what it sounded like: achievements so significant that even the gods, watching from above, would consider them "great"—whether those deeds were heroic or infamous.

Great deeds didn't have to be combat-related.

A blacksmith forging an extraordinary weapon, or an inventor producing a revolutionary creation—those could count too. But defeating a powerful enemy was the most straightforward way.

The classic example: Bell, while still Lv.1, defeating a Minotaur—a textbook combat great deed.

Great deeds also depended on relative difficulty.

If Lv.1 Bell defeats a Minotaur, that's a great deed.

If Lv.2 or Lv.3 Bell does the same, it's no longer "great," because the Minotaur isn't truly a threat anymore.

And if a great deed is achieved as a team, it's distributed by a rule that basically amounts to: the more you contribute, the more you receive.

The Brutal Truth: Great Deeds Require "Real" Risk

That meant combat great deeds were inherently dangerous—because they demanded that the adventurer confront an enemy beyond what they can safely handle, win anyway, and break through their limits.

In adventurer terms: under the principle that "adventurers shouldn't gamble with their lives," getting great deeds is the one time you must gamble—an "adventure" in the truest, most lethal sense.

So the idea of "cheating" great deeds with powerful gear or special skills?

Wishful thinking.

If anything, someone with exceptional equipment or abilities often faces even harsher requirements for what counts as a "great deed."

That was why, even after nearly a thousand years, high-level adventurers in Orario were still extremely rare.

Could you reduce risk by repeatedly fighting enemies near your limit?

Yes, in theory.

But the excelia gained is so small that you might need hundreds of such fights—costly, inefficient, and not worth it for truly talented adventurers. It was more like a slow, late-life path for lifelong Lv.1s to eventually crawl into the next level.

After hearing all this, Xien's thought of "maybe my system can let me take shortcuts" basically evaporated.

To get stronger, you had to leave your comfort zone—period.

The Real "Beginner Adventurer" Section Begins

After finishing the basics, Eina moved on to the real point: beginner survival rules.

When Xien saw tiny Eina carrying a dictionary-like tome almost half her height, he nearly broke into a cold sweat.

And that was when the "reliable orange-cat system sprite" finally made its entrance.

"Don't worry, Host. The system can read all of this once, store the most precise information, and when you encounter relevant situations in the Dungeon, I'll remind you immediately, meow."

At that moment, Xien felt like the system wasn't a helper anymore—

It was a lofty god who had finally taken pity on mortal suffering.

In Eina's astonished gaze, Xien then "demonstrated" an absurd learning talent—photographic memory and inference by analogy—earning her open admiration.

Xien, for once, felt genuinely embarrassed.

When someone is focused, time passes fast.

Xien finished—within a few hours—what Eina's plan had expected to take three days.

By the time Ryuu checked the clock and told them it was time to leave, evening had arrived. The two of them had to forcibly pull their minds out of the ocean of knowledge.

Xien realized it had been a long time since he'd studied that deeply.

But compared to boring, outdated university courses he'd never cared about, these were real survival and combat field summaries—and with the system's support, the experience felt almost like cheating.

One example alone fascinated him: methods of extracting drinkable water in the Dungeon by processing specific plant branches and leaves.

Just hearing the full technique made him itch to teleport straight into the Dungeon and try it.

But seeing the sun already at the horizon, he could only shelve it for now.

After saying goodbye to Eina, Xien and Ryuu began the walk back.

Eina's Aftermath

At the Guild entrance, Eina watched their backs until they vanished from view. Only then did she finally exhale.

A strong adventurer was already pressure—but this was ridiculous.

If she hadn't been excited enough to prepare three or four days in advance, he would've drained her preparation dry in a single evening.

"How was it?" her senior Naza asked, appearing beside her after work. Seeing Eina look relieved, she assumed the girl had simply been nervous and came to comfort her.

"Senpai… I finally understand," Eina said. "Geniuses really exist. Compared to him, I'm still so immature."

"Oh?" Naza frowned. "What's so exceptional about that boy?"

Eina explained: "I prepared three days' worth of material. Mr. Xien completely understood and memorized it in a few hours. Is that what a genius is?"

Naza was shocked internally—but still guided her: "Then shouldn't you be happy? At this pace, the hardest part—knowledge instruction—could be finished in under a week."

"…You're right!" Eina's eyes lit up. "I won't give up. I'm going to prepare more. Thank you so much, Naza-senpai—then I'll take my leave!"

Before Naza could even stop her, Eina sprinted off.

Naza watched her go, sighing: "Ah, youth… so full of energy."

Still, she thought, Eina needed a bit more steadiness.

But maybe this experience would make her grow a lot.

And really—on her very first assignment, she'd pulled an unbelievably good "card."

Back at the Familia: Astraea Is Waiting

By the time Xien and Ryuu returned to the familia headquarters, it was already dark.

No one else had come back—meaning they were probably staying overnight in the Dungeon. That was common, especially once you went below the tenth floor: one day simply wasn't enough.

No matter how strong you were, monsters didn't "avoid" you. Their instinctive hatred made them swarm adventurers on sight, and the only way forward was to wipe them out—fast—which took time.

So unless it was a shallow run, entering and exiting within a single day was often unrealistic.

When they entered the mansion, they found Lady Astraea—their goddess—seated at the head of the hall as if she'd been waiting.

Waiting for who? …Us?

As Xien wondered that, the goddess smiled warmly and gestured for them to come over.

"Astraea-sama," they both greeted respectfully.

In Orario, respect for one's patron deity was very real—not only because of Falna, but because gods lived with them like heads of household, guiding them as pillars of faith.

"Did you have a good day?" Astraea asked. "Training was hard, wasn't it?"

Then—without warning—she took Xien's hand, pulled him into her arms, and gently stroked his head with affectionate concern.

Xien's brain blanked.

He answered instinctively: "It wasn't hard. I'm really enjoying this fulfilling life."

And he meant it: the pain and exhaustion were still better than drifting through life without purpose.

"I see. Good," Astraea laughed softly. "I was worried Ryuu's training might be too intense. But if you're fine, I won't scold her, then…"

Ryuu fell silent.

She hadn't expected the goddess to have been watching everything—her "little thoughts" were completely exposed, and shame rose in her chest.

"Ryuu," Astraea said gently, "you need to learn to control yourself. You should have noticed today's issue."

She wasn't criticizing like a judge—she was guiding like a parent. Unless it was a major failure, Astraea didn't condemn her children.

Xien's durability had basically saved the day; a normal rookie would've been sent to the infirmary after a single day of Ryuu's "curriculum."

"Yes, Astraea-sama," Ryuu said sincerely. "I'll remember this lesson."

She'd had this flaw before, but it had never caused trouble in the team—so she hadn't taken it seriously. Today's overtraining finally brought it to the surface.

"Good. Come," Astraea said. "Let's update your status."

Status Update

Under Ryuu's lead, the three went to Astraea's room.

Books—books everywhere.

The goddess's room was unexpectedly plain: clean, simple, comfortable. Not luxurious, but it fit Xien's image of what a goddess's quarters should be.

At her instruction, Xien took off his top and lay face-down on her bed.

A scent like sunlight mixed with a soft fragrance drifted into his senses. His mind loosened, and for some reason he felt like he'd come home and collapsed into his own bed.

While he was still tense, he felt a droplet touch his back—

Then warmth spread, gentle and comforting.

A moment later, the status update was complete. With Ryuu's prepared paper, they took an imprint, and Astraea handed the updated sheet to Xien.

Xien

Lv.1

Strength: H 105

Endurance: G 213

Dexterity: I 97

Agility: H 101

Magic: I 0

Development Abilities: None

Magic:Breath of Abundance

Skills:Blazing Heart (hidden), Resilient Body, Pharmacology Mastery

"…"

Ryuu—who had leaned in to look—fell into silence with him.

"It's not bad," Astraea said calmly, forcibly suppressing her own excitement. "For day one, this is a good result. Keep it up."

Ryuu's eyes bulged.

"Not bad?! Are you kidding? What kind of training raises five hundred-plus points in one day?!"

She remembered her own first training results—what, sixty or seventy total?

At this pace, hitting S in every stat would only take a few days.

Maybe even surpassing that ceiling wouldn't be impossible.

As an old goddess, Astraea knew some "inside truths"—children with true heroic potential could exceed the supposed limits.
