Chapter 21 - Ariestal City : Preparation ( Danger Zone 1st Part )(Revision)

"This is getting out of hand! Is the ritual ready yet?!"

The speaker was a man with deep navy-blue hair and striking yellow eyes, his entire appearance screaming "pirate captain" from the weathered compass hanging at his hip to the anchor-shaped earring glinting in the dim light. He pulled a specialized telescope from his pocket—this one etched with faint glowing runes—and raised it to his eye, scanning something massive moving through the dark waters around their ship.

Plant roots had begun growing throughout the vessel. Not slowly, not gently—they were *bursting* through decks, exploding through walls, wrapping around railings with crushing force. They were systematically destroying the ship from both outside and in, like a living cage closing around them.

One of the crew members, frantically working on something in the corner, called back without looking up, "Not yet, Captain! We're still preparing the catalysts!"

Azure—for that was obviously who this was—nodded sharply, his jaw tight. "Then I'm heading to the central command. I need to shift the ship's mode. You can handle things here on your own, right?"

The crew member gave a quick, confident salute despite the chaos of roots splintering wood behind him. "We've got it! Just hurry—these roots are getting worse by the second!"

Azure turned and sprinted toward the command center, his boots pounding against the metal deck as roots chased at his heels.

---

Inside the command center, one of the crew members was glued to the sonar display, his Noibat hovering anxiously beside him with worried squeaks. The screen flickered with interference—static crawling across the display like living things. The creature hunting them wasn't even showing up on radar properly. It was like trying to track a ghost.

He looked up as Azure burst through the door, slightly out of breath.

"Captain Azure, I don't think relying on Mode 2 alone is safe," the crew member said urgently, pointing at the erratic readings. "Whatever that thing is... even our upgraded radar can't track it consistently. It's like it doesn't fully exist in normal space. We might need to deploy temporary shielding while we finish the ritual. If we wait too long—"

Azure's yellow eyes scanned the room quickly, taking in every display, every readout. "Alright. Head to the storage room—I think we still have some catalysts in there." He turned to his second-in-command, a man with shoulder-length silver hair and calm blue eyes that seemed to miss nothing. He wore a distinctive white leather jacket adorned with a Gym badge unlike any other: a skull with crossed swords, the blades accented in deep ocean blue.

Beside him, his Inteleon was working methodically, freezing roots that kept forcing their way through the walls with precise Ice Beam shots.

"Keith!" Azure called out. "Take them to storage and help set up the shield. I'll activate the second mode."

Keith didn't even turn around—just gave a short, sharp nod while continuing to direct Inteleon's attacks. "Got it. Let's move, everyone!"

Keith and three crew members immediately broke away from their positions, sprinting toward the storage room corridor.

Azure turned back to the command console, cracking his knuckles. "Alright everyone, brace yourselves. I'm opening the access now."

He entered his authorization code—a sequence of numbers only he knew. Several crew members gave him quick thumbs-up from their stations without looking away from their own tasks. Azure took a deep breath and activated the ship's second mode.

Battle configuration.

The ship immediately began to shift, its structure dissolving into streams of pure data that swirled around the command center like liquid light. Azure worked quickly, his fingers flying across holographic interfaces, manipulating the data to systematically delete the invasive roots while simultaneously restructuring the vessel into its new form. Metal rearranged itself. Compartments sealed and shifted. The entire ship groaned as it transformed, bulkheads sliding into new positions, the hull reshaping itself for underwater pressure.

"Okay," Azure muttered, wiping sweat from his brow as the last of the roots vanished from his display. "That should hold—"

He activated the external cameras to survey their surroundings.

The roots were already growing back. Faster than before. Thicker than before.

"SON OF A—!" Azure slammed his fist on the console, making the displays jump. "Looks like I'll have to keep deleting them continuously. This thing doesn't give up."

---

Meanwhile, Keith and the crew were racing through the transformed ship's corridors, their footsteps echoing off the newly-rearranged metal walls.

"Alright, the ship's structure has completely changed," Keith said, skidding to a halt at an intersection that definitely hadn't been there five minutes ago. "We'll need the updated map. The old layout is useless now."

One of the crew members immediately pulled out their Rotomdex—a special device with a grinning Rotom peeking out from the screen. "Rotom, can you show us the current ship layout? Fast!"

"Rotom!" The device chirped happily, its form flickering as it accessed the ship's new data. Within seconds, it projected a holographic blueprint of the submarine configuration, complete with their current location marked by a pulsing dot.

Keith studied it quickly, his blue eyes tracing the new pathways. "Okay, storage isn't too far from here. Maybe five minutes at a sprint. Let's move!"

They ran harder, legs pumping, breaths coming fast. As they ran, Keith found his mind drifting back to how they'd ended up in this nightmare. The memories surfaced like bubbles from deep water...

[FLASHBACK - YESTERDAY]

"Are the preparations complete?" Azure's voice rang out across the deck as he began his pre-departure inspection, his sharp yellow eyes scanning every corner with the practiced efficiency of someone who had learned—through painful experience—that overlooking even the smallest detail could spell disaster out at sea.

One of the crew members from the equipment division looked up from his clipboard, offering a quick, confident salute. "All set, Captain! Supplies are fully loaded, equipment is properly secured, and all emergency protocols have been verified. We're ready to go whenever you give the word."

Azure nodded approvingly, a rare smile flickering across his weathered features. "Good. This should go smoothly if we don't run into any—" He caught himself mid-sentence, almost laughing at his own optimism. Smooth voyages were a myth in his experience. But still, a captain had to maintain hope, even when the universe seemed determined to prove him wrong.

He turned toward the main deck, where Keith was huddled with the ship's Mages around an intricate ritual circle. Strange symbols and glowing runes covered the deck plating, pulsing with ethereal light as the Mages channeled their energy into the complex array. Keith's silver hair fell across his face as he worked, his blue eyes focused entirely on the delicate patterns taking shape beneath his careful hands.

"Keith!" Azure called out, cupping his hands around his mouth to be heard over the wind. "Is the ritual ready yet?!"

Keith didn't turn around—couldn't afford to break his concentration—but his voice carried back clearly, steady and focused. "Almost! Just finishing up the final stabilizations now! It's nearly complete!"

Azure tapped his foot impatiently, crossing his arms as he leaned against the railing. "Well, hurry it up! Before the route shifts again! You know how unstable the Shadow World access points are—if we miss this window, we'll have to wait another six hours for the next alignment!"

"I'm AWARE!" Keith's voice came back with a hint of exasperation, though his hands never faltered. "That's exactly why I'm working as fast as I can without accidentally blowing us all into next week! You want this done right or done fast?!"

The Mages beside him worked in perfect synchronization, their hands tracing intricate patterns in the air that left trails of shimmering light hanging momentarily before fading. Sweat beaded on their foreheads from the concentration required. Keith made a final adjustment to one of the outer runes, then stood abruptly, brushing chalk dust from his knees with a satisfied exhale.

"OKAY! It's done! The ritual is ready. We're good to go!"

Azure blinked, mildly surprised by the sudden completion. "Oh. You really were almost finished." He muttered under his breath, half to himself with a slight chuckle, "Guess I didn't need to rush him after all..."

Keith walked toward him, rolling his shoulders to work out the stiffness from crouching in one position for so long. He shot Azure a look that was equal parts exhaustion and long-suffering patience.

"You do realize that rushing a Mage during ritual casting is how accidents happen, right?" He gestured vaguely toward the glowing circle behind him. "One wrong line, one misplaced symbol, and we could've ended up in the Distortion World instead of the Shadow World. Or worse—completely deleted from existence. But sure, rush me next time. See what happens."

Azure clapped him firmly on the shoulder with a wide, unrepentant grin. "But you DIDN'T mess up. That's why you're my vice-captain, Keith. I trust you to handle the pressure."

Keith just sighed—the deep, weary sound of a man who had long ago accepted his fate and his captain's particular brand of leadership. "Let's just get this voyage started before something ELSE goes wrong. You know how these things work. The moment we think we're prepared, the universe likes to remind us we're not."

Azure's grin widened impossibly further. "Now THAT sounds like a plan worth following."

He turned toward the helm, raising his voice to carry across the entire ship. "ALL HANDS! Prepare for departure! We're heading into the Shadow World—stay sharp, stay focused, and for the love of everything holy, stay AWAY from the ritual circle unless you want to become a permanent resident of somewhere you definitely don't want to be!"

They activated the ritual. The world twisted, colors bleeding into each other as reality folded, and suddenly they were sailing through the Shadow World—a shadow foundation of the world where shadows moved independently and the sky was a permanent black and purple.

"I'm heading to the navigation room," Azure said, already moving.

"I'll monitor the deck," Keith replied, turning toward the railing.

But when Keith reached the navigation room just minutes later, one of the crew members was already waiting for him, face pale.

"Vice-Captain! There's something wrong!" The crew member pointed at the radar display, where a cluster of red dots pulsed ominously. Around them, dozens of smaller yellow dots swarmed.

Keith's blood chilled. "That's... that's a danger signature. How did we not detect this earlier?!"

On the deck, Azure and several crew members were scanning the murky waters when one of them gasped and pointed. A ship was emerging from the gloom—an ancient vessel, wooden and rotting, completely encrusted with bizarre sea growth. Dhelmise clung to its hull like barnacles, their anchors dragging through the water.

Azure's eyes widened. That wasn't just a ship. That was a Dreadnought. A living vessel, a colony of Ghost and Grass-types fused into a single terrifying organism.

"Nouuuut!"

The sound that came from it was deep and resonant, vibrating through the very fabric of the Shadow Realm. Azure and his crew immediately dove for cover.

Azure grabbed his Pokédex and frantically dialed Keith.

"Keith! There's a Dreadnought out here! A big one!"

Keith's voice came back tight and controlled. "Get the ritual ready. We're leaving the Shadow Realm. Now!"

"On it!" Azure ended the call and turned to his crew. "You heard him! We need the exit ritual! Do we still have materials left?!"

One of the crew members nodded shakily. "Yes, Captain! But... it'll take time to process them into catalysts. We can't rush this!"

Azure looked at the approaching Dreadnought, at the Dhelmise already detaching and swimming toward them, at the roots beginning to creep through the Shadow Realm waters toward his ship.

"We might not *have* time." He grabbed a Dusk ball from his belt. "I'll hold them off. BARIONG, COME OUT!"

The Pokéball burst open, and light erupted across the deck.

The Pokémon that emerged was magnificent—a dragon of ice and majesty, its body covered in what looked like thick, soft fur or packed snow, giving it the appearance of a true arctic sovereign. Its head bore curved cream-colored horns, strong and proud, while massive wings spread from its back, ready to tear through any blizzard. Its legs and sharp claws gleamed bright blue, and its long tail curved gracefully behind it.

"Bariong!" The ice dragon roared, its breath crystallizing in the Shadow Realm air.

"Okay Bariong, hold them off! We can't let them reach the ship!"

"RIONG!" Bariong launched itself from the deck, wings spreading as it soared toward the Dreadnought.

The Dreadnought responded immediately. Vines and roots erupted from its hull, reaching for the ship like living tentacles. Bariong inhaled deeply and unleashed a massive Blizzard—a howling storm of ice and snow that engulfed the Dreadnought and its attendant Dhelmise.

For a moment, they froze solid, encased in ice.

But then, from the Dreadnought's deck, multiple figures emerged. Plundertow—bizarre Pokémon that looked like living masses of frozen energy, their bodies shifting between solid and liquid, with single burning yellow eyes at their centers and fragments of ancient, rusted anchor acting as armor.

Several of them fired Flash Cannons simultaneously, the golden beams striking Bariong directly. The ice dragon grunted but held firm—its Ice Scales ability absorbing much of the damage. But Azure could see more Plundertow gathering on the Dreadnought's deck, preparing for another volley.

The crew didn't hesitate. Pokéballs burst open across the deck.

A Feraligatr landed with a heavy thud, jaws already snapping. A Noivern took to the air, sonic scales gleaming. A Chandelure floated ethereally, its flames flickering with eerie light.

And one crew member—a man with dark green hair and sharp purple eyes named Flint—released his partner: a Decidueye that materialized with an arrow already nocked.

"If we don't fight, we're getting dragged into the Twilight Zone," Flint muttered. "Troublesome doesn't even begin to cover this."

Azure released his second Pokémon—a massive Gyarados that crashed into the water, sending up waves. "Alright, here's the plan! Some of you focus on the exit ritual! The rest of us will hold them off until it's done!"

He turned to survey his forces. "We'll split positions! Gyarados, Bariong, and Feraligatr—close-range assault on the Dreadnought! Noivern, Chandelure, and Decidueye—long-range support! GO!"

"Sir, yes sir!" The crew snapped into action.

The battle began with Bariong launching a Freeze-Dry at the approaching Dhelmise. The attack was super effective, freezing several solid. But then the Dreadnought's vines glowed with healing energy—Forest Healing—and the frozen Dhelmise shook off the ice, fully restored.

Azure's eyes narrowed. "Of course it has healing moves. Nothing's ever easy."

He and Flint exchanged a look. Both of them reached for their Mega Stones simultaneously.

Azure pressed the cross-shaped pins on his jacket. Flint pressed a button on his telescope.

MEGA EVOLUTION.

The energy that erupted from both Pokémon was staggering.

Gyarados's form compressed and hardened, its scales transforming into natural steel armor that gleamed darkly. Its dorsal fins grew massive and razor-sharp, resembling ancient warship sails ready to part any sea. Crystalline red patterns emerged across its body, pulsing with power. Its white whiskers lengthened, cracking the air like whips.

Mega Gyarados.

Beside it, Decidueye's transformation was equally dramatic. Its body became more robust and imposing, its green cloak darkening to near-black, absorbing light itself to provide perfect camouflage. Its wings transformed from feathers into rigid, mechanical bow structures, like the toughest ancient wood. Its mask elongated, and its purple eyes burned with cold, focused intensity—capable of piercing any target regardless of distance. The feathers of its hood became pure spectral energy arrows, glowing with neon purple power.

Mega Decidueye.

Flint pushed his dark green hair back from his face, purple eyes locking onto targets with predatory focus. "Decidueye. Take out the Plundertow at the far end of the Dreadnought. The one preparing Spirit Shackle."

Mega Decidueye didn't acknowledge—it simply drew and fired in one fluid motion. The spectral arrow crossed the distance instantly, striking the Plundertow dead center. The Pokémon dissolved into nothing.

And then, moments later, it reformed.

Flint's jaw tightened. "Just as I thought. No matter how many times we delete them, they'll keep coming back as long as the Dreadnought is still active."

The crew member controlling Chandelure—a woman with sharp features and determined eyes—stepped forward. "Then we take out the source! Chandelure, INFERNO!"

Chandelure's flames intensified impossibly, gathering into a massive vortex of fire that swirled around it before erupting toward the Dreadnought. The flames engulfed the ancient vessel, burning away dozens of Dhelmise and Plundertow.

For a moment, hope flickered.

Then the Dreadnought's strange seaweed covering glowed, and the flames dissipated. The destroyed Pokémon reformed.

Flint's eyes widened. "Wait... look at the seaweed on the Dreadnought. It's spreading. It's thicker than before!"

One of the crew members cursed. "They're adapting! That seaweed—it's a catalyst! It's neutralizing Fire-type attacks and strengthening their own moves! It's like Jungle Healing, but constant! They can heal themselves and their status effects continuously!"

The Chandelure's trainer gritted her teeth. "Then we try something else. Chandelure—NASTY PLOT!"

Dark clouds with floating question marks appeared around Chandelure before being absorbed into its flames, its special attack skyrocketing.

Flint, who had been observing everything with sharp eyes, spoke up quietly. "I hate to admit this, but they're actually... organized. Look at their formations."

"What do you mean?"

"The Dreadnought has roles. Some are attacking. Some are defending. Some are providing support. And they're *flexible*—they can shift positions instantly based on the situation."

Another crew member spat over the railing. "Tch. They've done this before. A lot."

"NOIVERN—HURRICANE!"

A massive vortex erupted around the Dreadnought, winds screaming with enough force to tear apart normal ships. But the Plundertow simply shifted position, adapted, and retaliated—multiple Ice Beams striking Noivern simultaneously. The bat Pokémon crashed onto the deck, frost spreading across its body.

The trainer recalled it quickly, shame and frustration on her face. "I'm sorry, everyone. Most of my Pokémon are Flying-types. I'll only be a liability here. I'll help with the ritual instead."

Azure nodded. "Go."

Mega Gyarados surged forward, closing distance with the Dreadnought. "Now—CRUNCH!"

Its jaws opened impossibly wide, dark energy forming spectral fangs that clamped down on the Dhelmise protecting the Dreadnought's underbelly. Azure saw his opening.

"BARIONG—SPECIAL MOVE! ARCTIC DRILL!"

Bariong spun its body with incredible speed, focusing all its energy into its horn. Ice spread through the surrounding water as it became a living drill, slamming into the exact spot Mega Gyarados had weakened.

The impact was enormous. The Dreadnought shuddered, cracks spreading through its hull.

"YES! Now BLIZZARD!"

But even as the ice storm gathered, the Dreadnought's vines glowed again. Jungle Healing pulsed through its form, and the cracks sealed. Destroyed Dhelmise and Plundertow reformed. The damage was undone.

The Feraligatr's trainer—a stocky man with a constant scowl—noticed something alarming. The roots around them weren't just attacking. They were *multiplying*. Growing thicker. Forming a ring.

"Captain! The Dreadnought is trying to trap us! These roots—they're closing in! If they surround us completely—"

Azure's mind raced. "Then stop them! Feraligatr—DIVE! Use DEADROLL on those roots!"

Feraligatr plunged into the water, jaws snapping shut on the massive roots. Then it began to spin—a death roll of incredible power, tearing through the underwater vegetation while circling the Dreadnought. The move created a massive whirlpool that slowed the Dreadnought's advance and cleared the roots.

But the Plundertow weren't idle. Energy Balls gathered in their grasp, aimed at Feraligatr.

Keith's voice cut through the chaos. "Not today! DECIDUEYE—TAKE THEM OUT!"

Mega Decidueye fired multiple arrows simultaneously, each one finding its mark. The Plundertow's attacks dissolved before they could launch.

Chandelure, having stacked multiple Nasty Plots, was ready. Its trainer pointed at the Dreadnought.

"CHANDELURE—SHADOW BALL! MAXIMUM POWER!"

A massive sphere of shadow formed before Chandelure, then multiplied into dozens of smaller orbs that swirled around it before launching at the Dreadnought. The explosion was cataclysmic—waves erupted outward, the Shadow Realm itself seeming to shudder.

Flint allowed himself a breath. "Is it... is it over?"

But Azure was already grabbing Flint's telescope, raising it to his eye. His face went pale.

"No. It's not over." His voice was tight. "It's *escaping*. It's going into the Darkness—and it's taking us with it!"

Before anyone could react, shadowy vines erupted from everywhere at once, wrapping around the ship. A portal opened beneath them—darkness so absolute it seemed to swallow light itself.

They were pulled through.

When they emerged, they were somewhere else entirely. The Twilight Zone. A place of perpetual gloom where shipwrecks hung in the void like forgotten tombs.

Keith checked his records. "Our last Shadow Realm coordinates were Route 45. Now we're... trapped. In the Twilight Zone. In the Dreadnought's Aspect."

Roots began forcing their way into the ship.

Keith recognized them immediately. "Leech Seed. Even if we delete them, they'll just come back. We're inside the Dreadnought's Aspect now. Its rules. Its reality."

He grabbed a Great Ball from his belt and released it.

Inteleon materialized, sleek and deadly, its eyes already tracking threats.

"Freeze them. Buy us time."

Inteleon nodded and began firing precise Ice Beams, freezing roots as they appeared.

[BACK TO THE PRESENT]

Keith and the crew sprinted toward storage, Inteleon keeping pace beside them.

Suddenly, attacks came from nowhere—Spirit Shackles, Shadow Balls, Energy Balls converging on their position.

Inteleon reacted instantly, throwing up a Protect shield that absorbed the barrage.

Through the shimmering barrier, Keith saw them: multiple Dhelmise and Plundertow, phasing through the ship's hull like it wasn't even there.

"I knew it." Keith's voice was grim. "Changing the ship's mode wasn't enough. We're in their territory now." He straightened. "Alright. Time to fight."

The other crew members released their Pokémon—Gyarados, Greninja, Milotic materializing around them.

"We'll handle these guys!" one of them shouted. "You focus on the catalysts!"

Keith didn't argue. "I'm counting on you!"

He and Inteleon broke away, sprinting toward storage. A Spirit Shackle arrow materialized directly in their path—

Inteleon grabbed Keith and DIVE. They plunged into another plane, the World of Dive, emerging inside the storage room.

Keith gasped for air, adrenaline screaming through his veins. "Okay... we're in. Now we just need to find it."

He pulled out his inventory list and scanned quickly. "Alcalite Crystal. Locker number 62. Let's GO!"

They navigated through rows of storage lockers until they found it. Keith wrenched the door open and grabbed the glowing crystal.

"Got it! BACK NOW!"

Inteleon grabbed him again, and with another Dive, they vanished.

They reappeared in the command center. Azure was frantically deleting roots from the main console, sweat dripping down his face.

"Got it?!" he demanded without looking up.

Keith tossed the crystal to him. "Obviously."

Azure caught it one-handed, already moving toward the extraction terminal. "Go help the others with the Dhelmise. I'll set up the shield."

Keith nodded and ran.

Azure inserted the Alcalite Crystal into the extraction chamber. The machine hummed, processed, and a shimmering protective barrier began to form around the ship.

For the first time in hours, Azure allowed himself a small smile.

But outside, in the darkness, roots continued to grow. And somewhere in the void, the Dreadnought was still hunting.

The nightmare wasn't over yet.
