Chapter 40 - The Bloodheart Domain

The gates of Bloodheart did not simply open.

They awakened.

Stone groaned like a mountain shifting its weight as the enormous black gates slid apart. Ancient mechanisms hidden within the walls turned slowly, their movements echoing through the valley like distant thunder.

Izazel stepped forward first.

Behind him, Nyx walked silently with one hand resting on Kael's arm, while Ashfang moved beside them like a shadow carved from silver fur.

Above them, hundreds of crimson lanterns ignited one after another along the fortress walls.

Light spilled across the valley.

The Bloodheart Domain revealed itself fully.

And for the first time since leaving Libertas, Nyx stopped walking.

Because the world ahead of her was nothing like the forest.

Nothing like the small wooden settlement Kael had built.

It was a city.

A vast, ancient city carved into the side of a mountain.

Black towers stretched upward into the night sky like spears. Bridges of dark iron connected the structures across deep stone chasms. Rivers of faintly glowing crimson water ran through the streets like veins carrying life through a body.

The architecture was beautiful.

And terrifying.

Everything about the Bloodheart Domain carried a sense of ancient authority.

Nyx had never seen anything so large.

Ashfang lowered his head slightly.

"Many hunters," the wolf sent.

He wasn't wrong.

Along the walls, on the rooftops, on the high towers overlooking the gates—figures watched them silently.

Vampires.

Tall.

Pale.

Elegant.

And dangerous.

Their eyes glowed faintly in the lantern light.

Most of them said nothing.

But their gazes all settled on the same thing.

Kael.

The unconscious human in Izazel's arms.

Whispers moved across the walls like wind through tall grass.

"The prince returned…"

"With a human?"

"Impossible."

"Who is he?"

Izazel ignored them.

He had grown up here.

He had heard worse.

But Nyx felt the weight of those eyes pressing against her like cold wind.

She moved closer to Kael instinctively.

Ashfang noticed.

The wolf's tail rose slightly, his presence shifting from cautious to protective.

Izazel glanced down briefly.

"They are curious," he said quietly.

Nyx didn't respond.

She didn't need to.

Her eyes said enough.

Izazel sighed softly.

"Yes," he added. "And some of them are dangerous."

---

As they passed through the gate, two armored guards stepped forward.

Their armor was black steel etched with crimson sigils that pulsed faintly with blood magic.

Each guard carried a spear taller than Ashfang.

The weapons hummed quietly with ancient power.

One of them bowed slightly.

"Prince Izazel."

The other's eyes flicked toward Kael.

Then toward Nyx.

Then toward Ashfang.

"…You bring guests."

Izazel stopped walking.

"Yes."

The guards exchanged a glance.

The first one spoke carefully.

"Your father is already aware of your return."

Izazel's expression did not change.

"Of course he is."

The second guard hesitated.

"…He is waiting."

That sentence carried more weight than it sounded like.

Even Nyx understood that.

Izazel nodded once.

"Then open the inner path."

The guards stepped aside immediately.

As they did, the massive inner gate began to move.

The path leading deeper into the Bloodheart Domain revealed itself.

And it was even more intimidating than the outer city.

---

The inner domain was quieter.

The buildings here were older.

Older than anything Nyx had ever seen.

Towering stone structures lined the road like ancient kings watching travelers pass through their kingdom. Massive statues carved from obsidian stood along the path, each depicting warriors, monsters, or winged figures holding weapons shaped like crescent moons.

Nyx stared at them as they walked.

The statues looked alive.

Like they could step down at any moment.

Izazel noticed.

"They are not statues."

Nyx looked up.

He continued walking.

"They are guardians."

Ashfang's ears flicked.

"Alive?"

"Sometimes."

The wolf grunted.

"…Not comforting."

Izazel smirked slightly.

"That's the idea."

---

They walked for several minutes before reaching the heart of the domain.

The Bloodheart Castle.

Nyx stopped again.

The structure was enormous.

Not merely a castle.

A fortress carved directly into the mountain itself.

Its walls stretched upward for hundreds of meters, disappearing into mist near the top where crimson lights flickered like distant stars.

A massive staircase led upward to the entrance.

Every step was carved from a single block of black stone.

And at the top—

A pair of doors taller than the gates of Libertas.

The Red Raven descended again, landing on the highest arch above the entrance.

Its crimson eyes glowed.

"The lord awaits."

Izazel exhaled slowly.

Even he looked slightly tense now.

Ashfang noticed.

"Your pack leader," the wolf said.

Izazel chuckled softly.

"Yes."

"That's one way to describe him."

Nyx looked at Kael.

Kael's breathing had become shallow again.

The red glow beneath his skin flickered faintly.

Izazel saw it.

"We don't have much time."

---

They climbed the stairs.

Each step echoed loudly.

Vampire guards lined the sides of the staircase like statues, unmoving, watching silently as the prince returned.

At the top, the doors opened.

The sound was like thunder rolling through the mountain.

The throne hall of Bloodheart revealed itself.

And Nyx's eyes widened again.

---

The hall was enormous.

A cathedral of stone and shadow.

Columns carved with ancient bloodline symbols stretched toward the ceiling like giant ribs supporting the sky. Crimson banners hung between them, each bearing the crest of the Bloodheart family—a winged serpent wrapped around a crown.

Torches burned with dark red flame.

Not ordinary fire.

Bloodfire.

At the far end of the hall stood a raised platform.

And on that platform—

A throne.

Not gold.

Not jewels.

Just black stone carved into the shape of a massive winged creature.

And seated upon it—

A man.

Lord Dormon Bloodheart.

---

Nyx had never seen someone like him before.

He did not look monstrous.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

His hair was black as midnight, falling across his shoulders like shadow. His skin was pale but not lifeless. His crimson eyes glowed faintly with quiet intelligence.

He looked young.

But the weight in his gaze carried centuries.

He watched Izazel approach.

He watched the unconscious human in his son's arms.

And he smiled faintly.

"Welcome home."

His voice echoed through the hall like distant thunder.

Izazel stopped several meters from the throne.

Nyx and Ashfang remained slightly behind him.

For the first time since arriving, Izazel bowed.

"Father."

Dormon leaned forward slightly on the throne.

"And you return with a human."

His eyes moved toward Kael.

The faint smile faded.

"…Interesting."

The entire hall had gone silent.

Vampires lined the edges of the chamber now.

Watching.

Listening.

Judging.

Dormon stood slowly.

Even from across the hall, his presence pressed against the air like gravity.

He descended the steps from the throne with calm, measured movements.

Each step echoed.

He stopped directly in front of Izazel.

His gaze moved over Kael slowly.

Studying him.

The red glow beneath Kael's skin flickered again.

Dormon's eyes narrowed.

"…Tier Five."

Izazel nodded.

"Yes."

The lord's gaze sharpened slightly.

"You broke a Tier Five seal."

"Yes."

"And you brought the human responsible."

"Yes."

Dormon was silent for several seconds.

Then he asked the most important question in the room.

"Why?"

Izazel answered simply.

"Because I owe him my life."

The hall murmured.

A Bloodheart admitting debt to a human was not something the nobles heard often.

Dormon raised one hand slightly.

The whispers died instantly.

His gaze moved to Nyx.

Then to Ashfang.

Then back to Kael.

"…You ask the Bloodheart family to repay a debt."

Izazel met his father's eyes.

"Yes."

Dormon studied his son for a long moment.

Then he turned slightly.

"Bring the boy."

Izazel stepped forward.

Two attendants approached immediately.

They carefully lifted Kael from Izazel's arms and placed him on a stone table beside the throne.

Nyx rushed forward instantly.

Ashfang followed close behind.

Dormon watched the girl's reaction.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

He stepped closer to the table.

Placed one pale hand gently against Kael's chest.

Closed his eyes.

The hall fell silent.

Even the torches seemed to burn quieter.

For several long seconds, nothing happened.

Then Dormon's eyes opened again.

And for the first time—

The ancient lord looked surprised.

"…Fascinating."

Izazel frowned.

"What is it?"

Dormon looked down at Kael again.

"This boy," he said slowly,

"is not merely surviving the Tier Five fragment."

A pause.

"He is changing it."

The hall stirred again.

Even the nobles watching from the shadows leaned forward slightly.

Izazel felt his chest tighten.

"What does that mean?"

Dormon looked directly at him.

"It means," the ancient vampire lord said quietly,

"your human friend may become something the system itself was never designed to contain."

Nyx gripped Kael's hand tightly.

Ashfang's ears lifted.

Izazel stared at his father.

And somewhere deep inside the Bloodheart castle…

The politics of vampires had just collided with something far more dangerous.

A human boy.

With a broken system.

And the power to change it.
