Chapter 2 - Awakened Academy

Reinhard had just finished eating when the time for his appointment arrived.

Soon, he found himself seated inside a small office. Across from him sat a woman who looked to be in her mid-twenties.

The interview began immediately.

Since Reinhard could neither lie nor deceive, he had no choice but to answer truthfully. Half-truths were also out of the question—they counted as deception.

The first thing she offered him was psychological counseling.

He declined.

"Alright then," she said, still smiling. "Let's formally begin the interview. Are you ready?"

Reinhard almost gulped. What dreadful questions is she going to throw at me?

Fuck it. I ball.

There wasn't much he needed to hide anyway. The only things strictly off-limits were his Aspect's rank, his Flaw, and the full details of his ability. Everything else—even his true name—was fair game.

Part of him wanted to shock her. Reinhard wasn't above showing off, especially if it meant watching someone's expression twist in disbelief. But it had to be on his terms.

He nodded.

The barrage of questions began.

"Would you mind telling me about the type of aspect ability you received—combat, sorcery, or utility?"

"Combat and utility," Reinhard answered.

Her eyebrows shot up. The little flicker of surprise on her face almost made him smile.

Maybe this won't be so bad after all.

"Uh… alright," she continued, trying to regain composure. "Are you able to deal direct damage with your ability?"

"No."

One question followed another.

At first, they were simple. Near the end, however, they shifted toward more sensitive topics—his flaw, deeper details about his aspect, and his experiences during the first nightmare.

Reinhard concluded that this was deliberate: ease the Sleepers at first and then probe the real information.

By the time it ended, Reinhard had refused to answer only a handful of questions. Everything else, he had answered cleanly.

The interviewer, meanwhile, had been shocked one too many times. Her expression had shifted from polite curiosity to polite numbness.

"Alright," she finally said, her voice faintly mechanical. "Is there anything else you'd like to inform me about?"

Reinhard paused, pretending to think. He had already revealed plenty, at least enough to secure one of the highest evaluations.

But he hadn't mentioned that yet.

Well… I've already said this much.

A spark of excitement flickered inside him, like a kid about to show off a perfect report card.

Outwardly, though, his face stayed calm.

"Yes," he said. "I also have a true name."

Silence.

The woman froze. For a few seconds, her expression went through an entire storm—confusion, disbelief, and awe. Then, slowly, she turned toward the machine on the desk beside her—a lie detector, from what Reinhard had guessed earlier.

It didn't beep.

"O–oh, I… see," she stammered, trying to keep her professional tone.

Ever since humans began awakening, only one person—the Smile of Heaven—had ever received a true name during their first nightmare.

And now, Reinhard was the second.

"My true name is Beacon of Accord," he said before she could even ask.

The silence that followed was quite satisfying.

That night, Reinhard sank into the softest bed he had ever laid on, a faint smile still lingering on his lips.

This sure was a good day, he thought.

After revealing his true name and selecting his classes—well, class—he left the room.

He only picked combat training; the rest of the knowledge that he might need of the dream realm could easily be studied from the library, and that was what he was planning to do.

***

Sunny was in quite a good mood today.

He woke up in a soft bed and, after taking a shower, headed toward the cafeteria.

The cafeteria was a bit crowded. After filling his plate with all kinds of delicious stuff, he quickly realized that the only place he could sit was near the blind girl from yesterday. Her table was empty, since no one wanted to be close to her.

Sunny grimaced. It seemed the two of them were destined to be outcasts together for the remaining four weeks. He also felt uneasy in the presence of someone who was practically half-dead, but there wasn't much of a choice.

Losing his good mood, he sat down at the blind girl's table and gave a perfunctory nod to the social worker helping her get around. After that, he tried to pretend they didn't exist and focused on his food.

However, before he could finish, a sudden commotion drew his attention.

What's going on?

He looked up and saw a large group of Sleepers gathered around the massive screen hanging on the cafeteria wall, their faces filled with excitement and awe. A list of names were displayed on the screen, ranking the new batch of Sleepers from weakest to strongest, most likely based on the results of their interviews.

Not particularly interested, Sunny quickly located his own name near the bottom of the list. The only Sleeper ranked lower than him was the blind girl. Turns out her name was Cassia.

But the commotion was a bit too loud to be just the result of the ranking. Curious, he moved his gaze up.

Caster was in third place.

Above him was the portrait of a silver-haired girl—the same one he had noticed yesterday.

And above her…

The portrait of a crimson-haired boy.

Even in a cafeteria full of exceptionally attractive people, the young man stood out like a beacon.

To the right of their portraits, two simple lines of text were displayed:

"Name: Reinhard"

"True Name: Beacon Of Accord"

"Name: Nephis"

"True Name: Changing Star"

A mix of astonishment, fear, and admiration spread across the cafeteria.

Sunny blinked.

Why didn't I notice him yesterday at the opening ceremony?

By appearances alone, Reinhard seemed like the kind of person who would shine even in a room filled with people. However, he hadn't even caught a glimpse of him.

Still, receiving a True Name as a Sleeper was practically impossible. Sunny himself had faced Hero and Mountain King while wielding a completely useless Aspect—an absurd feat that had clearly pleased the Spell.

I wonder how they got theirs.

Unlike Sunny, the other Sleepers were far from calm.

"How… how can this be?!"

"I'm not seeing things, right?"

"Two people with True Names? Are you serious?"

"What kind of monsters are they?"

Listening to the excited whispers, Sunny felt a childish urge to shout, "Me too! I have one too!"

But, of course, he kept quiet.

Scanning the crowd, he noticed Caster staring intently at the screen. There was a strange, somber look on the usually humorous young man's face. But oddly, his gaze wasn't fixed on the lines mentioning the True Names.

Instead, it was locked onto the name Nephis.

Interesting.

Do they know each other?

Why would a lofty legacy be connected to someone who arrived at the Academy wearing a police-issued tracksuit?

Speaking of that, where were they anyway?

Sunny glanced around and quickly spotted the two sleepers who were at the center of attention.

Reinhard was seated at a table with a tray full of food, seemingly unconcerned with the commotion. He looked perfectly content, focused entirely on eating.

Nephis, meanwhile, appeared equally detached. A cup of coffee rested in her hand as she stared into the distance, her gray eyes calm, serious, and unreadable.

"Sleepers with True Names? That's impossible!"

"It's technically possible. Smile of Heaven got her true name in the first nightmare, I think. But yeah, I'm doubtful …"

"Maybe she lied in the interview?"

"Are you stupid? If it were that easy to deceive the administrators, the crazy pervert from yesterday would have been first in place instead!"

Sunny's face twitched. Crazy pervert, huh…

"Well, why don't we just ask them?"

***

"Well, why don't we just ask them?"

Ask what? Reinhard thought. Did none of you notice the lie detector in the interview room?!

Suddenly, the cafeteria fell into complete silence.

Every gaze turned toward Nephis and Reinhard.

Nephis raised her coffee cup slightly, her eyes still distant, as though she hadn't even realized that the attention of over a hundred people had just converged on her.

She's definitely doing that on purpose.

Reinhard's solution was simple: focus on his food. His expression remained completely blank.

Then Nephis finally lifted her head.

She looked around in genuine confusion and asked:

"Mmm. What?"

Okayyy, so she wasn't acting…

Still, he was impressed.

I think I need her level of autism to deal with this too.

A moment later, Caster stepped forward and gave her a polite bow.

"Lady Nephis. I am Caster of the Han Li clan. It seems your trial went well."

What's with this weird legacy shit? Reinhard thought. Don't you dare pull that on me, or I'll just ignore you.

"It is what it is," Nephis replied with a bright smile on her face, which just looked out of place.

Huh? Is she socially challenged? Or maybe it's her flaw.

Caster offered an awkward smile.

"I see. I am glad you returned unharmed. Not that I doubted your abilities."

Does he know her from before? Doesn't look like she knows him though…

Once that little scene wrapped up, Reinhard finished his food—fortunately without Caster attempting the same thing on him. No one else had the courage to approach him, so he was able to leave the cafeteria with ease.

The downside was that, in his hurry to get out, he forgot to grab dessert.

***

Reinhard stood inside the academy's massive dojo, positioned near the back and keeping to himself.

All the Sleepers were facing a large metal plate attached to a special measuring machine. The device displayed the strength score of anyone who struck it.

Most students stood in groups; only a few, like Nephis and Reinhard, were spaced far apart from everyone else.

Reinhard watched in silence as one Sleeper after another stepped forward to punch the plate.

Most scores ranged between 10 and 14.

Those with enhancing aspects occasionally reached 15, sometimes even 16.

After observing a handful of attempts, he was already bored.

Two things determined a high score: proper technique and raw physical strength.

Reinhard had the first part covered thanks to [Battle Master]. The second part, however…

That was going to be an issue.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Titan's Corpus]

Attributes: [Fated] [Battle Master] [Favored by Fate] [Titan's Corpus]

Or not.

***

Reinhard immediately summoned his runes and focused on [Titan's Corpus].

He had a specific doubt. Since he received this attribute to compensate for his lack of physical strength, it would obviously increase it. But how it increased his strength was the important part.

There were two possibilities.

The first was that it might increase his strength by a fixed amount. That could either be extremely overpowered early on or almost useless later.

For example, if his current power level were around 100 points and the normal range for a Sleeper was about 100–200, then gaining a flat +100 would be great at this stage. But once he grew stronger—say his base strength reached 1000 points—the natural range would probably become something like 700–2000, depending on specialization. A sorcerer would have lower base strength, while a frontline fighter would have much higher.

At that point, a flat +100 wouldn't mean much at all.

The second possibility was that the attribute increased his strength by a percentage.

For example, a 100% increase. If he had 100 points, it would become 200. If he had 1000, it would become 2000.

Scaling growth would always stay relevant, no matter how high he climbed.

He cared about this because of a theory he had.

The description of his innate ability was:

Your soul and body adapt to conditions you have endured.

At first glance, it seemed vague. But the more Reinhard thought about it, the more unsettling—and exhilarating—it became.

If his body and soul adapted to endured conditions, then constantly maintaining a self-created attribute would count as endurance.

Take [Titan's Corpus], for example.

If he kept the attribute active, his body would continuously endure enhanced physical capability. Over time, it would adapt to that state, slowly making that level of strength his new normal.

And if the attribute increased his strength by a percentage rather than a fixed amount, then the implications were absurd.

His base strength would rise. Then the attribute would amplify that new base. Then his body would adapt again.

A self-feeding cycle.

Even if the growth rate was slow, it meant he would grow stronger without training, simply by existing.

But the description didn't say body alone.

It said soul as well.

Which meant this adaptive effect wouldn't be limited to physical traits.

Attributes like [Clear Sight] or the one he had used for checking his memory's enchants, would also be subject to adaptation.

Given enough time, even attributes he couldn't actively maintain would leave permanent traces behind.

In other words—

Even though he could only hold one created attribute at a time, his body and soul would gradually assimilate the effects of all of them.

The realization sent a thrill through Reinhard. The possibilities stretched far beyond what he had imagined.

His innate ability was extremely usefull, far more then he had imagined.

After a moment, he exhaled and forced himself to calm down, then focused on the rune interface of [Titan's Corpus].

[Titan's Corpus] Attribute Description: "A fragment of titan strength rests within you. Your body grows tougher, stronger, and more enduring than it has any right to be."

This doesn't tell me shit!

All that genius-level analysis was wasted because the spell was once again being more cryptic than it had any right to be.

Though… it does use the word "grows." Does that mean it isn't a constant amount?

The method he used last time wouldn't work either. Previously, he had created an attribute that increased his ability to understand his own runes. That was what had let him fully figure out his flaw, even though the description said almost nothing.

But this time, he couldn't do that. Titan's Corpus would disappear the moment he swapped it out for another attribute, so the trick was useless now.

Reinhard lifted his head and glanced toward the device everyone was focused on.

A random Sleeper had just struck the plate. The machine displayed a score of 12.

He scanned the room without much thought, his gaze eventually landing on Nephis.

At the same time, she looked at him.

Her expression was completely emotionless.

Weird.

He turned away, conveniently ignoring the fact that his own face rarely showed much emotion either.

A few sleepers later, it was Nephis's turn.

Unlike the other Sleepers, she delivered her blow immediately—a clean, powerful strike.

Reinhard could tell she was incredibly experienced.

She probably trained from a young age to be that good, he thought.

After a brief pause, the display flashed:

16

Hmm. Not bad, I guess.

He didn't think much of it. He couldn't tell whether she had used her aspect or not. If she had, the result would have been underwhelming. If she hadn't—either to conceal it or because her ability wasn't combat-oriented—then it was solid.

For all he knew, she might possess an attribute similar to [Titan's Corpus].

There were too many unknowns to draw conclusions.

So he dropped the thought.

If anything, he was more curious about his own result.

The next Sleeper stepped up.

Caster.

His strike landed with sharp precision, and the machine lit up:

21

A collective gasp rippled through the hall. Admiring gazes followed him as he bowed calmly and stepped aside.

Then those looks shifted—to Reinhard. The next one in line.

Their eyes were filled with anticipation and excitement. They wanted to see how high someone with a True Name and first-place ranking would score.

Reinhard would be lying if he claimed he wasn't a little nervous.

But he ignored it and took his position in front of the machine.

Without hesitation, he drove his fist forward with everything he had. Thanks to his attributes, his form was perfect. The force behind it was comparable to Caster's—though not quite equal.

To his slight disappointment, the number appeared.

20.

***

Twenty was an outstanding score for a Sleeper.

However, Reinhard, seeing himself in first place earlier, had somehow reached the conclusion that he was the strongest sleeper in this year's batch.

Reality didn't take long to beat down his illusion, though.

As for the Sleepers who were watching him, the reactions were mixed. Some were expecting him to do better than Caster; Reinhard even heard some sleepers being suspicious about whether he had used his aspect at all.

Hey, hey, hey, why do you have so much faith in my strength in the first place?

Thankfully, Awakened Rock didn't let the discussion go on for long.

"Enough. Now, we will move to sparring and evaluate your general level of training. I need two volunteers to begin."

Nephis was the first to step forward and walk to the center of the ring. The one who followed right after was Reinhard.

He needed combat experience. Going first meant a lot more opportunities to fight, so there was no reason to stay back and watch.

"The rules are simple. Make your opponent's back touch the floor or throw them out of the ring. Use whatever abilities and techniques you find appropriate."

Reinhard decided to attack first. The gap in their physical capabilities was significant enough that he expected a quick victory, though that did not mean he took her lightly.

He surged forward, driving a punch straight toward her chest. Nephis slipped past it with ease, her body already moving as the strike passed by.

She closed the distance in the same motion, lifting her knee toward his midsection. Reinhard anticipated that and dodged her knee. Before she could reset, his left leg snapped out in a sharp kick.

Nephis brought her arms up to shield herself. The block held, but the force behind it still pushed her back several steps.

Reinhard followed immediately, stepping in with a short combination that forced her guard high and compressed her stance. Nephis responded by springing upward, bringing her leg down in a forceful overhead kick.

Reinhard raised his arm and absorbed the impact without yielding. As she dropped back toward the ground, he stepped forward instead of retreating, seized her ankle mid-descent, and drove it upwards.

Her balance broke instantly. Nephis hit the ground flat on her back.

It was a disgusting move; he admitted that, but it worked.

He wasn't too excited by the victory since he expected that this would happen.

Another good thing was that he now finally knew how his [Battle Master] attribute worked! The whole battle he instinctively knew what to do as long as he was analyzing and watching Nephis properly.

Well, talking about that—

Nephis was still on her back; Reinhard approached her and gave her a hand.

She took it and stood up.

"Good fight," he said.

She nodded once and left the ring.

Instructor Rock grinned cheerfully at Reinhard and then said.

"Next."

Holy shit, this guy can smile?

What followed was basically a massacre. Apart from Nephis, every fight was like a breeze through the park.

There was a massive guy who had scored seventeen in the strength test, and Reinhard defeated him in a single move.

As for the gossip among the Sleepers, it went completely insane. At first, they whispered about his strength. Then they fell silent to watch the matches. Then they whispered again. But when the same pattern repeated four times in a row, they stopped whispering altogether.

They simply stared at him as if he were a monster.

But there was one person whose reaction unnerved him.

Nephis.

From the corner she was at, she watched his every move like a hawk, her grey eyes tracking each motion with unsettling intensity.

As if she were trying to carve his movements into her memory.

Hm. Is she one of those people who can't stand seeing someone else above them? Competitive, maybe?

He didn't think much about that.

Also, isn't this all too easy?

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Titan's Corpus.]

Sometime between the fights, bored by how effortless they were, Reinhard decided to experiment with creating and testing new attributes mid-battle.

In every match, he continuously switched between [Titan's Corpus] and a freshly created attribute: [Motion Sense].

Motion Sense, as the name suggested, allowed him to perceive fast-moving objects and react to them at abnormally high speeds.

Combined with [Titan's Corpus] and [Battle Master], it practically made him unbeatable in spars—especially fights like these.

After a few more one-sided beatdowns, it was finally time for the most anticipated match of the entire session.

As Caster approached the ring, the sleepers looked on in anticipation to see if Caster would join them and lose to or defeat Reinhard instead.

Reinhard, having been beaten by Caster in the strength test, had no intention of holding back or going easy.

Vengeance will be mine.

Even though that was only a joke, a small part of him did want to win this fight to establish his own prowess.

After the instructor gave the signal, there was no movement from either of them for a few seconds.

"Good luck, Reinhard," Caster said with a nod.

"Good luck to you as well," Reinhard replied.

A few seconds passed as both of them readied themselves. And in the next moment, it was as if Caster ceased to exist.

In a fraction of a second, Caster covered the distance between him and Reinhard and delivered a devastating blow.

With the help of [Motion Sense] and a quick switch to [Titan's Corpus], Reinhard dodged the blow at the last possible moment.

Reinhard punched at him; however, Caster had no qualms about exploiting his speed to its fullest. He disappeared once again.

Reinhard did not turn immediately. Instead, he grounded his stance, switching to [Motion Sense] for a split second before switching back. That small timing was enough for him to track Caster.

Caster reappeared behind him, shifting his weight and putting all the force into his fist.

At the last possible moment, Reinhard shifted.

Rather than evading fully, he stepped into the attack, catching Caster's arm near the elbow. The impact jolted through him, but he softened the momentum with a slight turn of his torso, redirecting the force instead of resisting it.

Caster's speed worked against him. His body moved faster than his balance could correct. There was a slight lag in his perception, and Reinhard was going to take advantage of that.

Reinhard rolled his shoulder under the trapped arm and pulled, pivoting sharply. Using Caster's own forward drive, he lifted and turned in one fluid motion.

The world inverted.

Caster was thrown cleanly over Reinhard's shoulder, and he hit the ground on his back, the ring shuddering beneath him.

He groaned in pain.

Collective gasps of shock traveled through the room. The fight was too fast for most of them to observe, but the end result remained the same.

Reinhard won.

As it should be.

He thought amusedly.

***

Sore from the beating everyone had received thanks to Reinhard, all the male sleepers were now in the boys' locker room.

And to take revenge, most of them were circling around Reinhard. Or at least that's how it seemed to him.

This is hell. He groaned internally.

"Reinhard, that was incredible!"

"Your aspect is overpowered. Am I right?"

"That Nephis girl stood no chance at all!"

"Did you beat everyone without using your aspect at all?"

Reinhard was politely replying to their questions with a small smile on his face.

However, internally—

Bunch of cowards.

Caster was just as popular, if not more so, than Nephis, and yet they only commented about her and not him.

He was standing a few meters apart after all, and even if weaker than Reinhard, he was capable of beating all their asses in his own right. Plus, he was a legacy, too.

***

After changing into his academy uniform, Reinhard made quick work of the few sleepers who were still following him by politely refusing their attempts at making him join their group.

Since he was mostly alone till now, they thought the locker room would be a good opportunity to start a conversation with him to continue that connection later.

But Reinhard wasn't going to be stuck in their games; he knew his own worth. If he really had to group with sleepers for the dream realm, he would simply look for worthy members, and he was valuable enough for most to accept him into their party.

And since he had clearly refused to join them, they had no choice but to leave.

Finally, some time alone. He sighed while walking back to his room.

They were sticking to him like leeches till the point he politely told them to piss off.

Still, forgetting that, Reinhard noted a good observation he had made.

Is it some kind of psychological effect, or have I actually grown a bit stronger than before?

He didn't have [Titan's Corpus] at the moment, and yet he felt as if his strength was more than before. Even if not as much as when he had [Titan's Corpus], it was still a bit more than his base strength.

Scarred Adaptation is doing its job properly, I suppose.

That also meant his theory was right about his innate ability to adapt to attributes.

***

Reinhard went back to his room and used the attribute he had used to examine every detail of his flaw to read the remainder of his status, primarily to make sure he didn't miss anything.

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Spell Perception.]

Now then, let's see...

He observed his stats from the top.

Scanning downwards, his eyes first landed on his aspect ability, Oathborne.

What's even there to know about Oathborne? I pretty much know everything about this already.

Still, he decided to see a better description of his aspect ability since it wasn't like it was costing him anything.

The aspect ability description changed right in front of his eyes.

Aspect abilities: [Oathborne]

Aspect ability description: [You may manifest attributes bound to your own actions. Each soul core can anchor one such attribute.]

This was like a slap to the face and a side part of his self-awareness laughing at him at the same time.

Reinhard's eyes widened in surprise.

Woah, woah, woah, wait a second! First of all, how did you convert a five-word description into two whole sentences? What kind of scam is this?

Well, more like a scam for people who did not have an attribute similar to his.

After thinking that, he examined the description seriously.

Manifest attributes bound to your own actions... Is that some kind of restriction?

That was the first thought that entered his mind. While someone else might see it as a better understanding of how they could create attributes, Reinhard immediately caught onto its wording.

That would mean I cannot create attributes that aren't bound to my actions... What does that even mean?

He stored that for later thinking and moved on to the other part.

Each soul core...

That clearly implied there could be multiple!

What the fuck!

His mind started racing.

Nightmare creatures could easily have up to seven cores, as far as humans knew. That wasn't the case for awakened humans; Reinhard had never heard of a human having more than a single core.

Is this something only I can have?

His innate ability, or aspect ability, didn't indicate he could achieve something like this.

He looked at his aspect rank and one of the attributes.

If most awakened can't get multiple cores, it means I can due to something unique to me.

The obvious things in that criterion were his attribute [Favored By Fate] and his aspect rank, which was Divine.

He decided to use [Spell Perception] for a better description.

[Favored by Fate] Attribute Description: "Your standing with Fate is elevated. Drop rates of memories and echoes are increased. Chance of gaining an attribute upon spell evaluation is improved."

Yeah, so this is not the reason. Still cool, though.

Reinhard was not as surprised as he should have been by reading the description because the normal description already said, "Fate shows preference towards you." That meant his standing was elevated. Drop rates of memories and echoes increasing was an amazing thing, as well as gaining attributes, but due to having a far more impressive thing occupying his mind, he didn't pay it much attention.

I guess that means divine aspect rank is the reason for the multiple cores.

[Attribute Name: Eidetic Memory]

Attributes: [Fated] [Battle Master] [Favored by Fate] [Eidetic Memory]

After doing his favorite time-pass routine again, which was looking at his runes, Reinhard was now heading towards the library.

He soon found the library and went in.

I guess I am not the only one who thought of gaining more knowledge. He thought after spotting a few other sleepers reading books.

Reinhard reached the shelves with information related to the dream realm and started to browse them.

After finding a good one, he sat down at a table and opened it.

A few minutes later he frowned.

Damn, this is quite inefficient.

Since he was an orphan from a very young age, Reinhard was taught basic reading and writing in the orphanage, at least before he ran away due to the rotten behavior of the staff and maybe his own as well.

He knew being illiterate would be hell, so he always read newspapers or any posters he would come across, even if he wasn't interested in the topic. Though it didn't help much.

And as a consequence of which, even though he could remember everything thanks to his [eidetic memory] attribute, he was still reading very slowly right now.

Suddenly an idea popped into his head.

Of course I can just do that!

[New attribute acquired.]

[Attribute Name: Rapid Comprehension]

Attributes: [Fated] [Battle Master] [Favored by Fate] [Rapid Comprehension]

[Rapid Comprehension] Attribute Description: "You read faster than most and retain what you learn with uncommon clarity."

If I can't have two attributes right now, why not have one that constitutes both?

He thought smugly.

Reinhard started reading the book again. The book had fifteen hundred pages, but he was able to finish it in around fifteen minutes.

Now this is fun!

He placed the book back and took out a few more.

By the time he was done, he left the library after reading eighteen more books. Since this was the first day of classes, it seemed most sleepers had avoided coming here or doing any more work; he didn't know how the library would look tomorrow, though.

I just hope this place doesn't get crowded.

He headed out of the library quickly and went back to his room.

After setting an alarm on his communicator for 4 am, he lay down on his bed and closed his eyes.
