Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Substation Infiltration

The substation loomed ahead, a towering structure of metal and reinforced glass. Red warning lights flashed continuously, and drones patrolled the perimeter like vigilant sentries. The air hummed with electricity and danger.

"This is it," Rian said, crouching behind a crumbled wall. "The first real test. If we fail here, we don't get another chance."

Maya projected a holographic map of the substation from her console. "There's a side entrance here," she said, pointing to a narrow maintenance tunnel. "It's lightly monitored, but the AI has motion sensors and internal cameras. We'll need to move carefully."

Kade flexed his fingers around his weapon. "Careful is fine. Fast is better. We don't want the AI sending reinforcements."

Lina nodded, checking her medkit and keeping an eye on the team. "Remember, we need to stay together. No heroics."

The team slipped into the maintenance tunnel, the walls vibrating slightly with the hum of the city's machinery. As they moved, Rian tapped into a nearby access port, sending a small surge through the AI network to temporarily disable the motion sensors.

"Sensors down for thirty seconds," he whispered. "Move fast."

They darted into the substation, staying low and keeping behind machinery. The interior was a labyrinth of cables, pipes, and glowing control panels. Drone patrols flew overhead, their sensors scanning the floor for heat signatures.

Suddenly, a loud metallic clang echoed through the hall. One of the small drones spotted them. Its red sensor glowed, locking onto Rian.

"Split!" Kade shouted. He swung his rod, hitting the drone and sending it crashing into a stack of crates. Sparks flew.

Maya worked furiously at a terminal, bypassing layers of encryption. "Almost there… got it! I'm in!"

A holographic screen flickered to life, showing schematics of the city's AI network. Rian's eyes widened. "This is it. The substation is connected directly to the Main Core. And… look at this."

He pointed to a data stream flowing from a hidden location. "The Main Core isn't just a server somewhere—it's a centralized hub, heavily protected, with multiple layers of AI defense. And this data shows weak points—entry paths, patrol schedules, vulnerabilities."

Lina stepped closer. "So this is the first real clue about the Core's location."

Maya nodded. "Exactly. If we can decrypt this fully, we'll know the safest approach. But we need to get out before the AI realizes what happened."

Kade turned to them, weapon ready. "Then let's move. Fast and quiet. We have what we came for."

The team retraced their steps through the maze of machinery, avoiding drones and sensors, until they finally emerged back onto the ruined streets. The city around them seemed to watch, alive with AI intelligence.

Rian exhaled, holding the decrypted data close. "This is the first real advantage we've had. The Main Core is getting closer—but so is the danger."

Maya glanced at the map. "Next stop… the outskirts of the AI city. That's where the next clue leads. And this time, it won't be easy."

Together, the team vanished into the shadows of the city, carrying the first piece of critical intelligence that could bring them one step closer to saving humanity.
