Chapter 2 - A King's Trial

Kaito felt a surge of emotions wash over him in the dressing room. The realization that these stunning elf girls had never been this close to a human man before was both exhilarating and humbling. "I...I've always dreamed about elves," he thought to himself, his voice barely above a whisper. "They're all so beautiful, so perfect. I feel like I'm going to wake up any moment and find myself back in my cramped dorm room, living the same shitty miserable life over and over again."

Kaito then smiled softly, wondering if this was just the beginning of his adventures in this magical world. His heart swelling with happiness and contentment. He knew that whatever lay ahead of him in this new world, he would face it with these gorgeous elf ladies by his side and a Queen to guide him on the right path. Kaito quickly dressed into his regal attire, struggling at first but managing to do it himself. He stepped out of the dressing room and made his way back to the throne room, his face glowing with a newfound confidence.

The royal attire transformed him completely, fitting perfectly and highlighting his figure in a noble, distinguished way. The intricate embroidery, the rich white and gold colours, and the elegant lines of his outfit accentuated his stature, giving him a regal air. Even his glasses now seemed to complement his sophisticated look, lending an air of intellectual charm. The elves gathered around him, their eyes wide with admiration. "You're so handsome, Kaito!" Rose squealed, clearly enamoured by his transformation.

Queen Fiore nodded approvingly, her gaze appreciative yet serious. "You wear the attire of a king well, Kaito. Now, you must undertake your trial. It will not be easy; only a true king can overcome the challenge that awaits." A sense of determination filled Kaito. "Thank you. I understand, your majesty," he said as he bowed to the Queen, steeling himself for whatever lay ahead.

Queen Fiore waved her hand gracefully, conjuring a swirling portal of shimmering blue and silver energy. "Through this portal lies your trial," she explained solemnly. "You must navigate the Labyrinth of Shadows and defeat the dark creature that dwells within. Only then will you prove your worthiness."

Taking a deep breath, Kaito stepped through the portal, leaving the comforting presence of the elves behind. Instantly, he found himself in a dark, eerie maze filled with shadowy twists and turns. His heart raced, the sense of dread heavy in the air. Not long after entering, he encountered creatures of darkness that lurked within the shadows, their eyes glowing menacingly.

In a moment of panic, Kaito instinctively attempted to flee, and to his astonishment, the creatures didn't chase after him, they stopped in their tracks. He felt a strange sensation as if his mind extended outward, connecting and dominating theirs. The realization hit him like a bolt of lightning. He had the power of Mind Domination, capable of bending others' wills to his command. Shocked but excited by this incredible discovery, Kaito pressed on confidently, this valuable new ability allowing him to navigate the labyrinth with ease.

As he approached the centre of the maze, a powerful sorcerer awaited him, cloaked in dark magic and emanating sinister energy. The sorcerer cast powerful spells towards Kaito, intending to destroy him. Without knowing how, Kaito instinctively raised his hands, feeling another surge of energy within him. Miraculously, he reflected the sorcerer's magic back, completely unharmed.

The dark sorcerer was overwhelmed by his own spells, collapsing in defeat. Kaito stood victorious, his heart pounding from adrenaline and disbelief. Could all this really be happening? Or was he still dreaming?

Outside the labyrinth, the queen and elf girls watched the scene unfold through a magical device projecting a vivid hologram. They gasped collectively in relief and excitement, cheering for Kaito's remarkable success. "He truly is extraordinary," Queen Fiore murmured, a proud smile spreading across her beautiful face. "Perhaps he truly is the king we've desperately sought."

Back within the labyrinth, Kaito stood tall, finally beginning to accept the reality of his situation. The extraordinary powers he'd just discovered gave him hope. Maybe he wasn't dreaming, perhaps this was truly his destiny.

Kaito ventured further into the Labyrinth of Shadows. Believing himself unstoppable, he pressed forward with a swagger, only to abruptly halt as a massive, grotesque creature emerged from the darkness. The beast was enormous, covered in rough, mottled scales with twisted horns protruding menacingly from its distorted head. Its eyes glowed a sinister crimson, and rows of sharp, jagged teeth dripped with foul saliva. Kaito's heart lurched in fear, a chilling realization gripping him; this would not be as easy as he'd hoped.

Watching anxiously from the palace, each elf girl reacted uniquely as Kaito faced this monstrous challenge. River clasped her hands tightly, fear etched deeply in her delicate features. Orchid bit her lip nervously, her usual playful demeanour replaced by genuine concern. Cherry clung tightly to Iris, eyes wide with worry. Sage stood stoically, though her fingers trembled subtly, betraying her deep anxiety. Iris, gentle and kind-hearted, openly shed tears, praying fervently for Kaito's safety. Lily paced anxiously, her face pale, while Rose clenched her fists tightly, fiercely determined yet clearly terrified for him. Queen Fiore gently reassured them, "Have faith, my dears. Kaito has hidden strengths yet to be revealed."

Back in the labyrinth, Kaito struggled fiercely against the monstrous being. Its enormous claws slashed through the air, narrowly missing him and leaving huge holes in the walls. In one swift, brutal motion, the beast struck him, sending Kaito sprawling painfully across the stone floor. Blood trickled from a deep gash on his side, the sharp pain snapping him out of his overconfidence.

Fear surged through him, sharpening his senses. He had to think quickly. Reaching deep within himself, Kaito felt another surge of power, realizing he could manipulate multiple minds at once. With tremendous effort, he split his focus, dominating smaller shadow creatures in the labyrinth to attack the monstrous beast. This distraction bought him time, and Kaito concentrated, anticipating the monster's next move.

With a terrifying roar, the beast unleashed a powerful spell. Kaito barely managed to reflect the attack, sending it flying back with devastating force. It howled in agony, staggering before collapsing, defeated. Panting heavily and injured, Kaito knew he'd barely survived this ordeal. Was it sheer luck? Who knows. His experience at playing video games came in handy for aiding him in this battle.

A multicoloured portal shimmered open, signalling his victory. Limping through, Kaito arrived back at the palace, greeted immediately by relieved cries from the elves. River and Sage rushed forward, gently laying their hands upon his injuries, their magic weaving rapidly to heal him. Kaito gasped softly, surprised and still in shock, but immensely grateful.

Queen Fiore approached, her eyes bright with pride and satisfaction. "Congratulations, Kaito. You have proven yourself worthy. However, your journey will be challenging yet immensely rewarding. Welcome into your new role as King of Fiore." The Queen continued. "There are lots of preparations to be made before this is official, but that can wait for now. Please rest, my king."

Kaito exhaled deeply, relief washing over him. He'd passed the test, escaped banishment, and now was living a life he'd never dared dream could be real.

As he lay there, allowing River and Sage to finish healing his wounds, something felt… wrong. The portal he passed through earlier, appeared behind him out of nowhere. The swirling colours trembled, flickering like a candle in a draft. A low, resonant hum echoed through the throne room deep, ancient, and wrong in a way that made the marble floor vibrate beneath his boots. All seven of the elf girls gasped and Queen Fiore's expression shifted instantly. "That is not supposed to happen," the Queen whispered. Before anyone could react, the unstable portal convulsed violently and exploded outward in a surge of black energy. Kaito's eyes widened as he turned around to see a towering figure step through.

Unlike the grotesque beast Kaito had just defeated, this creature stood tall and almost regal in form. It wore jagged obsidian armour that seemed grown rather than forged, its surface pulsing faintly like a living thing. From beneath its horned helm burned two piercing red eyes. In its hand rested a long spear crafted from condensed shadow, crackling with dark lightning.

The air itself seemed to recoil from its presence. "The Abyssal Warden…" Queen Fiore breathed, her voice tight with alarm. "Impossible. It cannot exist outside the Labyrinth." The Warden raised its spear slowly. Kaito quickly got up from where he lay, moving to protect the Queen and all the elf girls huddled nearby. The Abyssal Warden pointed his weapon directly at Kaito. Suddenly a pulse of crushing pressure slammed into Kaito. He staggered backward, knees giving out as an invisible force bore down on his shoulders like a mountain. The elves cried out in panic, several instinctively raising defensive barriers, but the Warden flicked its spear once and the spells shattered like glass.

Kaito gritted his teeth. "Of course," he muttered under his breath. "The final boss always has a second or third phase." Despite the fear clawing at his chest, something inside him sparked. The Warden had chosen him. That meant this was still his trial. Kaito felt he had to prove he is capable of protecting the Kingdom of Valeria, no matter the cost.

Before the creature could strike again, Kaito forced his mind outward. He felt for the lingering shadow creatures still tethered faintly to his consciousness from within the Labyrinth. They answered. Through the unstable portal, several twisted figures crawled halfway into the throne room, shrieking as they lunged at the Warden's legs. The Warden did not even look down. With a casual sweep of its spear, it obliterated them into mist. Kaito felt the mental backlash like needles in his skull. He gasped, clutching his temple. The elf girls gasped and cried out in worry, but the Queen continued to watch Kaito, determined he had the ability to defeat this unexpected enemy.

So this one was different. Kaito thought. Stronger. Faster. Smarter. The Warden moved. In a blur, it crossed the room and thrust its spear toward Kaito's chest. Time slowed. He raised both hands instinctively, not to dominate, but to reflect. The dark lightning struck Kaito head-on. Pain exploded through his body, but instead of piercing him, the energy bent, warping around his palms like water deflected by glass and shot back toward the Warden in a violent arc. The blast hit squarely against the obsidian armour. Cracks spread across its chestplate.

The elves erupted in shocked cheers. But the Warden did not fall. Instead, it straightened… and laughed. A hollow, metallic sound that echoed unnaturally. Then the cracks sealed themselves. "Oh come on," Kaito groaned, sweat beading at his brow. The Warden slammed its spear into the floor.

Shadows erupted outward in jagged waves, racing across the marble like living ink. Wherever it touched, stone blackened and warped. Kaito leapt aside just as spikes of darkness erupted from the ground where he had stood. He rolled, coming up on one knee, heart pounding. Think. Think! Video games had patterns. Bosses had mechanics. Reflecting raw power wouldn't be enough.

He focused again but this time not outward. Inward. He felt the threads of domination within him. They weren't just brute force. They were control. Influence. Command. What if…

The Warden lifted its spear again, preparing another devastating strike. Kaito reached not for its body, but for its weapon. He extended his mind toward the spear itself. For a split second, nothing happened. Then he felt resistance. The spear was alive. Bound to the Warden. Fueled by the same shadow energy as the Labyrinth. "Obey," Kaito whispered through clenched teeth.

The spear trembled. The Warden's crimson-coloured eyes flared brighter as it sensed the intrusion. The spear began to vibrate violently between its gauntleted fingers. A crack of dark lightning misfired, striking the ceiling instead. Gasps echoed through the throne room. Kaito poured more will into the connection, his entire body shaking from the strain.

"Drop it," he commanded. The spear jerked sideways. The Warden resisted, gripping tighter. But Kaito pushed harder. Veins stood out along his neck. His glasses slid slightly down his nose. His vision blurred. Then. The spear tore free from the Warden's grasp. It flew through the air and slammed into Kaito's waiting hands. The moment he touched it, shadow surged up his arms like wildfire. Agony lanced through him, but he refused to let go. The Warden roared, a furious, distorted sound. Without its weapon, its armour flickered unstable.

"Now!" Queen Fiore shouted. The elf girls moved as one.

River and Sage cast binding vines of glowing emerald light that wrapped around the Warden's legs. Orchid and Lily launched concentrated bursts of radiant magic at the fractures in its chestplate. Cherry and Rose reinforced Kaito with shimmering barriers. For the first time, the Warden staggered. Kaito raised the corrupted spear, fighting the shadow trying to crawl into his mind. "You don't get to invade my world," he said through gritted teeth. "This is mine now."

With a shout, he reversed the energy flowing through it. Instead of shadow, he forced reflection through the weapon itself. Blinding silver light erupted from the spearhead, colliding directly with the Warden's core. The obsidian armour shattered completely. The Warden's form destabilized, breaking apart into fragments of shadow that dissolved into nothingness. Silence fell.

The remaining darkness in the throne room evaporated like mist under sunlight. The unstable portal finally snapped shut. Kaito stood there trembling, still gripping the spear, which now crumbled into harmless ash in his hands.

For several long seconds, no one moved. Then... The elf girls rushed him. He was nearly tackled by a wave of relieved bodies and grateful embraces. River clung to his arm, Cherry buried her face against his shoulder, Orchid laughed shakily through tears. Even stoic Sage allowed herself a small, proud smile. "You protected us," Iris whispered, eyes shining. Lily and Rose bounced up and down on their feet, feeling so relieved to see Kaito was okay. Queen Fiore approached more slowly this time. Her expression was no longer just proud. It was certain.

"The Labyrinth did not merely test your strength," she said quietly. "It tested whether you would fight for this kingdom when it struck beyond its bounds." She placed a hand over her heart and bowed her head. "You have passed a trial no king before you has endured." Kaito looked around at the palace, at the cracks in the marble, the scorch marks on the ceiling, the worried but hopeful faces surrounding him. His chest swelled. He wasn't the lonely guy from a dorm room anymore. He wasn't just some lucky summoning accident. He had stood against something ancient and terrifying and won. Not alone. But as their king. And for the first time since arriving in this world, Kaito truly believed it: This wasn't a dream. This was the beginning.
