Chapter 34: Continued Attention

The morning after the stunning Audi Cup semifinal, Munich was wrapped in a soft gray haze. The sky was overcast, but the atmosphere around São Paulo's hotel was anything but quiet. Reporters had already gathered outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the young player who had just shocked European football.

Inside the hotel restaurant, most São Paulo players were still yawning over breakfast, their bodies exhausted from the intense match against Bayern Munich. Only a few early risers were present.

Ken was one of them.

Even after scoring a hat-trick the night before, he woke up early out of habit. His muscles were sore, but the fatigue didn't bother him; if anything, it reminded him how real everything had become. Just a few months earlier, he had been fighting simply for playing time. Now, he was the player European giants were beginning to watch closely.

He had just finished stretching near the hotel gym when a familiar voice called out.

"Did you sleep at all?"

Ken turned and saw Wagner approaching, still wearing yesterday's travel clothes. The dark circles under his eyes made it clear he had taken an overnight flight. Beside him walked São Paulo's sporting director, Sergio Suárez, smiling warmly.

Ken immediately stood up.

"Mr. Wagner, Mr. Suárez — you came early."

Wagner waved his hand dismissively. "No time to waste. Bayern already scheduled a meeting. They want to talk today."

Suárez chuckled. "After yesterday's performance, everyone wants to move quickly."

Ken hesitated slightly. "Shouldn't you rest first? We could talk after the final."

"No need," Wagner replied. "Clubs move fast when they're serious. If we delay, someone else might step in."

Ken nodded, then glanced curiously at Suárez. "Mr. Suárez, you came along as well?"

Suárez smiled casually. "If negotiations actually begin, the club needs to be involved immediately. And besides, this is a rare opportunity to travel on company expense."

Ken accepted the explanation without suspicion, though Wagner quietly rolled his eyes at the excuse.

Bayern Training Headquarters

Säbener Straße, Bayern Munich's training base, felt completely different from any facility Ken had ever seen. The buildings were modern yet carried an unmistakable aura of tradition. Trophies, historic photographs, and framed jerseys lined the hallways, silently reminding visitors of the club's long history of dominance.

As Ken walked through the corridor with Wagner and Suárez, he felt a subtle shift in mindset. Playing against Bayern the previous night had been one thing; stepping into their headquarters was another. Here, every detail emphasized professionalism, discipline, and ambition.

They were soon guided into the office of sporting director Matthias Sammer.

Sammer stood up with a welcoming smile.

"Ken, Mr. Wagner, Mr. Suárez — welcome to Bayern Munich."

After brief greetings, everyone sat down.

Sammer leaned forward slightly, his tone calm but direct.

"Ken, yesterday's match left a strong impression on everyone here. Your performance was exceptional — not only your goals, but also your composure and decision-making."

"Thank you," Ken replied politely.

Sammer continued, "Bayern is one of the most competitive clubs in the world. Here, players train at the highest level every day, surrounded by the best professionals in football. We believe that in this environment, your development could accelerate dramatically."

Ken listened quietly. He understood exactly what Bayern represented: prestige, exposure, and the opportunity to compete at the highest level immediately. Many players would accept such an offer without hesitation.

But his priorities were clear.

"If I join Bayern," Ken asked calmly, "will I have guaranteed playing time?"

The room fell silent for a brief moment.

Sammer had clearly expected the question. He folded his hands together before answering honestly.

"At Bayern, we cannot guarantee playing time to any player. Competition is part of our identity. However, if you perform well in training and matches, the coach will certainly give you opportunities."

Ken nodded, showing that he understood the logic. Still, he did not speak immediately.

Sammer continued, "You are young. Even if you do not start immediately, you would train alongside world-class players every day. That experience alone can elevate your level significantly."

Ken thought for a moment before replying.

"I understand what Bayern represents," he said calmly. "But my current goal is very clear — I want to earn a place in the national team for next year's World Cup. To do that, I need consistent match experience."

Wagner watched silently from the side. This was the first time he had heard Ken state the reason so directly in front of a club official.

Sammer nodded slowly. "That is an understandable goal. However, at a club of our level, every player must earn his minutes through performance. Even established stars face competition."

Ken met Sammer's eyes calmly.

"I'm not afraid of competition. But timing matters. If I spend months waiting for opportunities, I may miss the World Cup window entirely. At São Paulo, I play every match. That continuity is important for my development."

Suárez remained silent, but inwardly he felt relieved. From the club's perspective, Ken staying at São Paulo for another year would be beneficial.

Sammer leaned back slightly, thinking. He had negotiated with many young talents over the years, yet few showed this level of clarity at such a young age.

"Ken," he said, "many players dream of joining Bayern. Are you sure you want to delay such an opportunity?"

Ken answered without hesitation.

"Joining a great club is important. But joining at the right time is even more important."

The room grew quiet again.

Sammer studied the young forward carefully. He saw confidence, but not arrogance — determination, but also maturity.

Finally, he nodded.

"I respect your honesty. Bayern's door will remain open. Continue your development, and whenever you feel ready, we can speak again."

Ken stood and shook his hand.

"Thank you, Mr. Sammer."

After the Meeting

As they stepped outside the building, Wagner exhaled deeply.

"Well," he said with a half-smile, "that was straightforward."

Ken laughed slightly. "I hope I didn't cause trouble."

"Not at all," Wagner replied. "In fact, being clear about your priorities makes negotiations easier. Clubs know exactly where you stand."

Suárez added, "And it shows confidence. Many young players chase big contracts too early. You're thinking long-term."

Ken looked ahead toward the training fields. Players in red kits were already warming up under the morning sun.

"For now," he said quietly, "I just want to keep improving. Everything else can wait."

Back at Bayern Headquarters

Inside the office, Sammer picked up his phone after the meeting ended.

"Yes," he said calmly, "continue monitoring him closely. His development is progressing faster than expected. If he maintains this trajectory, we must be ready to move at the right moment."

He paused, then added:

"Players with talent are common. Players with talent and clarity of purpose are rare. Keep watching him."

Outside, Ken walked back toward the car with Wagner and Suárez, unaware that several major European clubs had already begun placing his name on their long-term recruitment lists.

For now, however, none of that mattered to him.

The final of the Audi Cup awaited — and beyond that, a much larger stage he was determined not to miss.
