Chapter 129 - Act CXXVI: The Secrets of Genji

Late at night, outside a sprawling, traditional Japanese manor on the outskirts of downtown Tokyo, Natasha Romanoff crouched silently in the shadow of a high ridge, peering down at the estate.

'No surface guards,' Natasha observed, her eyes tracking the microscopic disturbances in the foliage, 'but the shadows are crawling with ninjas. Chisei Gen is certainly not as simple as he lets on.'

After arriving at the Genji Residence, Natasha hadn't risked a direct breach. According to Tony's satellite scans, the Genji Residence was vast and sprawling, but on paper, it appeared to be nothing more than an ancient family estate.

Only on-site did the reality become clear: the perimeter was an absolute fortress. Hidden sentries crouched in the rafters, thermal cameras swept every open pathway, and even the passing maids moved with the disciplined, lethal gait of trained assassins.

"I need to find a blind spot," Natasha whispered into her comms.

At the exact same time, Clint Barton's infiltration of Genji Heavy Industries was progressing with practiced efficiency.

Deep inside the corporate skyscraper, Hawkeye peeked around a sleek marble corner. After memorizing the sweep pattern and rotation timing of every security camera in the corridor, he executed a silent roll into a structural blind spot, slapping a high-frequency signal bypass device onto the wall.

"Tony, I'm at the primary elevator bank," Hawkeye reported softly into his earpiece. "I need you to loop the feeds."

"Coming right up," Tony's voice crackled through the channel. "Three, two, one... alright, Legolas, you can take a casual stroll. For the next ten minutes, you don't exist on any of their servers."

"Copy that."

Hawkeye stepped out into the open. Even with Tony overriding the cyber-defenses, decades of field experience meant Clint remained on high alert.

With the electronic barriers neutralized, Clint picked up his pace, sweeping through the floors. Most of the offices and standard testing labs on the upper levels appeared entirely mundane. He found zero actionable intelligence—until he stepped into the main elevator to access the 19th floor.

As the lift ascended, Clint's internal clock picked up a subtle anomaly.

From floors 1 through 18, the elevator took precisely 1.0 second per floor. But between the 18th and 19th floors, there was a distinct 2.2-second gap.

'There's a hidden floor sandwiched in between,' Hawkeye realized.

Acting instantly, Clint jammed a tactical wedge into the elevator doors and pried them open. The central alarm remained silent under Tony's loop.

Peering down into the dark elevator shaft, Hawkeye spotted a reinforced steel access hatch built directly into the wall between the 18th and 19th levels. With agile precision, he dropped down through the shaft, catching the narrow ledge, and slipped through the hidden hatch.

A subterranean, state-of-the-art biological laboratory came into view. Glass containment tanks held strange, mutated genetic samples, dragon-blood research logs, and classified medical files.

Ten minutes passed in a flash. Clint checked his wrist timer, rapidly capturing high-resolution photos and video telemetry of the containment arrays.

Exiting the skyscraper minutes later, Hawkeye paused at the street corner, looking back up at the looming silhouette of Genji Heavy Industries. He had prepared for corporate espionage, but he had never imagined such terrifying, bio-hazardous secrets lay hidden behind Chisei Gen's legitimate facade.

Back at the Genji Residence, Natasha finally seized an opening and slipped past the outer wall.

Outside the main compound, sentries guarded every open walkway, making direct ground movement impossible. However, the traditional architecture of the estate featured interconnected wooden corridors and elevated walkways, giving Natasha an alternate route above the ground.

She moved silently from room to room, her boots making less sound than a falling leaf. Yet, despite searching several wings, she found no classified documents. Was this entire security network truly set up just to protect the family's living quarters?

Refusing to leave empty-handed, Natasha directed her focus toward the heart of the estate: an isolated central courtyard surrounded by blooming cherry blossom trees, built over a pristine koi pond.

CLICK.

The heavy outer doors of the main estate slid open. Chisei Gen stepped into the central hallway, flanked by his executioners.

"Chisei, I've already dispatched the search teams across all eight districts," Crow reported, tossing a cigarette lighter in his hand. "If that broker is still breathing in Japan, we'll have his location by sunrise."

"Good," Chisei replied, rubbing his temples. "Everyone get some rest."

As the group conversed, Natasha noticed the hidden sentries in the courtyard subtly shifting their attention toward the High Patriarch.

Seizing the micro-second distraction, Natasha glided through the cherry blossom trees like a phantom, stepping through the sliding wooden door of the central private quarters.

The inner room was empty.

'This is Chisei's personal office,' Natasha identified instantly.

Moving with practiced speed, she swept the room, photographing every visible document, scrolling through desktop files, and duplicating hard drives.

Satisfied, Natasha unlatched the back window to make her exit. But the second her boots touched the wooden floorboards of the inner veranda, she froze.

Three figures had materialized out of thin air in the middle of the courtyard.

Crow, standing in the center, gave Natasha a lazy, appreciative whistle.

"My lady, visiting our boss's private quarters at this hour?" Crow smirked, leaning against his weapon. "You certainly have an elegant taste in late-night calls."

Yasha, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword, and a quiet female executioner stood on either side, their eyes locked on Black Widow's defensive posture.

"It seems my stealth assessment was flawed," Natasha said smoothly, easing her hands away from her belt. "Where is your boss, Chisei Gen?"

"At a time like this, shouldn't you be a little more concerned about your own immediate safety?" Crow asked, raising an eyebrow. "Ms. Black Widow of the Avengers."

"I believe your boss is a smart man," Natasha replied calmly. "He knows what happens if an Avenger goes dark on his property."

"Alright, alright," Crow waved his hand with a helpless sigh. "The Avengers really are a pain to deal with."

Crow gestured for her to follow, and Natasha quietly fell into step behind them. A short walk brought them to the main reception hall, where Chisei Gen was already seated at the head of the table, sipping tea.

Once Natasha took a seat opposite him, Chisei set his cup down, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

"Your behavior is far too offensive, Ms. Romanoff," Chisei said, his voice dropping to an icy register. "I was under the impression that we had established a cooperative relationship."

"We are indeed cooperating, Mr. Gen," Natasha replied smoothly, offering a disarming smile. "It's just that our team discovered you seem to be hiding a vast amount of classified intelligence from us. We simply felt a little... uneasy."

Even with Chisei's disciplined self-control, his jaw tightened at her casual audacity. The Avengers had agreed to a deal by day, then breached his private family home by night—and after being caught red-handed, their explanation remained condescendingly arrogant.

Had it not been for Chisei prioritizing the bigger picture and avoiding an outright war with S.H.I.E.L.D., Natasha would not be walking out of the compound on two feet.

Chisei raised his hand, signaling a servant. "Escort our guest back to her team."

He didn't want to look at her for another second.

Once Natasha was led out of the compound, the reception hall fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

CLANG!

Yasha violently slammed his hand against his sword hilt, his face contorting in rage. "Once this crisis passes, I'm going to cut her down! The dignity of the High Patriarch cannot be desecrated by these foreign arrogance-peddlers!"

Yasha had almost drawn his blade, Kumo-Kiri, right then and there, stopped only by Crow's warning glance.

"Calm down, Yasha," Crow said softly, blowing a stream of smoke toward the ceiling. "There's no need for you to dirty your hands."

Crow's eyes narrowed into dark, predatory slits. "In a little while, things in Tokyo are going to get very lively. By then, those Avengers might just accidentally lose their lives to the Deathservants."
