Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Red March

The Phase 2 monsters were different.

In Phase 1, the goblins were wild. They screeched, ran in circles, and attacked whatever was closest. They were animals.

Phase 2 monsters were soldiers.

We heard them before we saw them. It wasn't a chaotic scramble of claws. It was a rhythmic thumping. Thump. Thump. Thump.

I peered over the railing. The front doors of the lobby were gone. Marching through the opening were three rows of Hobgoblins. They carried shields made of stop signs and car doors. Behind them stood a Kobold Shaman, holding a staff topped with a glowing red skull.

"They have a healer," I whispered, spotting the green aura around the Shaman. "Focus the Shaman, Silas. If you don't kill him, the others won't stay dead."

Silas wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. "I can't get a clean shot. The shields are in the way."

"Then we wait," I said, my hand hovering over the turret's trigger mechanism. "We wait until they hit the stairs."
