Chapter 6 - chapter 6:Equations and Interruptions

Monday. Light was actually studying this time. Light sat at the small desk in his apartment, books stacked haphazardly around him. One hand held a pencil, which he was biting absentmindedly, while the other hand moved across the page, calculating formulas and scribbling notes.

The sunlight slanted in through the window, casting a warm glow on the papers. Light's eyebrows were slightly furrowed, his tongue peeking out as he concentrated, the pencil caught between his teeth every few seconds.

He chewed a little harder when a particularly tricky equation refused to make sense.

-Ugh… come on, - light muttered under his breath, tapping the pencil against the desk.

He adjusted his glasses, leaning closer to the page, trying to focus again. His other hand moved to cross out a mistake, then back to calculate.

The room smelled faintly of coffee from earlier. Light glanced at the mug half-full, barely noticing the steam rising from it.

-Okay… if I take this value and plug it in here… - he murmured, scribbling again.

A subtle creak of the floor made him glance up. His eyes widened.

-Shia! How did you get in? - light asked automatically, alarmed.

Pond was standing in the doorway, hoodie on, hands in his pockets, casual as always, a small grin on his face.

-The code works, remember? - he said, shrugging. - Figured I'd check on the genius at work.

Light blinked, a little flustered, and bit his pencil again.

-…Right, the code.

-You're really biting that pencil like it's going to solve the problem for you, - Pond said with a faint grin, stepping closer.

Light froze for a second, blinking at him.

-…It's helping, - he replied, voice a little defensive but distracted.

-Sure it is, - Pond said, leaning casually against the doorframe. - Looks intense.

Light adjusted his glasses again, trying to focus on the equations. That's when Pond's voice dropped slightly, teasing but soft.

-It's my first time seeing you with glasses… you're kinda… cute, - Pond said, eyes flicking briefly to Light before returning to the doorway.

Light felt his ears heat up. He looked down at the pencil in his hand, tugging at it nervously, and then forced himself back to the page.

-Uh… thanks, - he muttered, voice low, trying not to show how much it affected him.

Pond smirked faintly, noticing the subtle reaction but not pressing further. He leaned a little closer, just enough to brush against Light's shoulder slightly.

-You know, - Pond said after a moment, - you should take a break. Maybe eat something. Or… talk to someone.

-Talking won't fix the integral, - Light muttered, chewing the pencil again.

Not the integral, - Pond replied, smiling faintly. - You.

-I don't need to be fixed I need to understand these equations- light said flipping his hair and fixing his glasses-you seriously have to stop coming into my apartment like that I almost died...

Pond grinned, leaning casually against the doorway, hands in his hoodie pockets.

-Almost died, huh? That bad, huh? - he teased, voice soft but amused.

Light groaned, tapping his pencil against the desk.

-It's not funny, Pond! You can't just… sneak in! What if I wasn't paying attention? What if something happened?

I know the code, - Pond said lightly, shrugging. - Thought I'd check on the genius at work.

-Genius at work? Seriously? - Light said, narrowing his eyes, though he couldn't hide the faint twitch of a smile. - More like a very stressed second-year barely holding it together.

Pond chuckled, stepping closer, his shadow falling over part of the desk.

-Yeah, yeah… stressed, concentrated, serious… very cute too, - he added casually.

Light froze, pencil halfway to the page.

-Cute? Me? - he sputtered, offended. - Seriously?

Pond smirked faintly, shrugging as if it were obvious.

-Yeah, you. Glasses, hair falling over your forehead while you bite your pencil… it's… kind of charming.

Light immediately looked away, crossing his arms, heat creeping up his neck.

-Charming? Hmph. I'm concentrating, not trying to charm anyone!

-Right, right… - Pond said, chuckling softly. - Just pointing out the obvious. You can keep focusing.

Light exhaled slowly, gripping his pencil tighter, forcing his attention back to the numbers. But no matter how hard he tried, he could feel Pond leaning there, relaxed and teasing, making the equations blur a little more than usual.

-Concentrated… serious… definitely not cute, - Light muttered under his breath, scribbling furiously.

-Sure, sure, - Pond said, stepping back a little but still in the room. - I'll let you get back to your precious equations.

After studying, Light was laying on his bed, still tense from all the calculations, pencil tucked loosely behind his ear. Pond was sitting on the edge of the bed as well, one foot dangling, the other tucked slightly under him, scrolling casually through his phone.

-You actually finished? - Pond asked, glancing up from the screen.

-Yeah, - Light muttered, flopping onto the bed. - For now. My brain feels like mush.

Pond tilted his head, smirking faintly.

-Mush, huh? Sounds serious. You want a snack or something?

-Maybe later, - Light said, staring at the ceiling. His hair fell loosely over his face, glasses slipping down his nose.

He absently pushed them back up with one hand.

Pond's eyes flicked to the gesture, and a quiet comment slipped out, teasing but soft:

-You with your glasses like that… still kinda cute.

Light groaned, rolling onto his side to face the wall, pretending he didn't hear.

-I said I'm not cute… concentrated, serious… not cute, remember?

&Uh-huh, - Pond replied, smirking, shifting slightly on the edge of the bed. -

-Concentrated Light. Got it.

The room was quiet except for the soft scroll of Pond's phone and Light's steady breathing. The sunlight spilling through the blinds warmed the space, and even though Light refused to look, he felt Pond's presence close enough to make his chest tighten slightly.

-You're staring, - Light finally muttered, turning just enough to glance at him.

Not staring, - Pond said lightly, eyes flicking up from his phone. - Just… observing the genius at work.

Light hugged a pillow to his chest, trying to hide the faint warmth creeping into his cheeks.

-Genius… right. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Pond laughed softly, a low sound that seemed to fill the quiet room.

-I could stay here forever watching you solve equations, you know.

Light's chest tightened, but he didn't respond. He just stared at the ceiling, realizing that even if it made focusing nearly impossible, Pond being here wasn't so bad… maybe even… nice.
