The forest was too quiet.

Selene stood at the edge of the eastern ridge, her gaze fixed on the darkness beyond the trees. The wind carried the faint scent of pine and damp earth—but beneath it, something else lingered.

Anticipation.

The trap had been set hours ago.

Now it was just a matter of who would take the bait.

Below her, Blackclaw warriors were positioned in careful silence, hidden among the trees and along the perimeter walls. No one spoke. No one moved unless necessary.

Even Kai was quiet.

Which meant this mattered.

Silas stood a few feet behind Selene, his presence steady but coiled. His wolf was close to the surface tonight—restless, alert.

Waiting.

Rowan crouched near the treeline, eyes scanning every shadow.

"They're late," Kai whispered.

Selene didn't turn.

"Not late," she said softly.

"Careful."

Silas's voice was low.

"They know something is different."

Selene nodded slightly.

"Then they'll test it."

A branch snapped in the distance.
