Chapter 38
Louis carried his sister and hurried toward her chamber.
"She's frightened by the wind now. Let's talk tomorrow."
Without waiting for a response, Louis walked away, completely forgetting—or perhaps simply unconcerned about—her husband.
His entire focus was on his dear sister and what had just happened.
She had awakened her power.
Something completely new to Roseline.
Had she been living with such power all this while, with it merely dormant inside her? Was this what it meant for it to finally awaken? She didn't even know what to call it.
Behind them, Lucas was left to deal with the aftermath of what his king had caused.
The entire palace was in an uproar.
What could have caused such a huge disturbance?
The wind had been nothing like an ordinary breeze. It had raged like a storm, violent enough to make it seem as though the entire eastern wing was about to be swallowed whole.
Maids ran through the corridors, desperately trying to understand what had happened. Palace officials and guards hurried about, checking every corner for signs of an intruder.
Lucas walked toward the guards on patrol.
"No worries. It was only the wind. Don't fret about it. There's no intruder," he assured them. Then he turned to the prime minister. "You can ask the prime minister."
The prime minister looked like a man who wanted nothing more than to leave and deal with the mess waiting for him.
He merely nodded nonchalantly and walked away.
The people watched the weary and exhausted-looking man disappear.
What happen to this always energetic man?
His unruly daughter has gotten what she deserve, maybe the king wouldn't yield to his pleading that's why he looks so dejected. Some maids whispered to among themselves.
The prime minister was at his wits' end.
Ever since Louis had returned from Armathia, everything had changed. His attitude had become harsher, colder, and far more unpredictable.
But what disturbed him most was the ancient aura he had sensed surrounding the two royals.
The wind was not natural.
He was certain of it.
So why had it happened?
And how?
Was there something the royal family was hiding from them?
He walked briskly away, leaving Lucas behind to calm the frightened people. They were still worried that the strange wind might return—or worse, that an enemy mage had somehow infiltrated the palace.
But the king loyal knights understand, they know their king is furious. The wind will once occur if he's in rage, an overwhelming panic descend when they felt his aura earlier. They thought an enemy or intruder has entered. They were ready to be called. Only to see it's the stupid prime minister that evoke his anger.
Cant the father and daughter duo just have some senses and leave when its needed to leave. Why causing ruckus because the king had always condone the two for the country's inner peace sake?
Some people don't know when to stop when the line is drawn. What a pity., he didn't love his fragile life at all.
He still didn't know he was saved by the princess. He would have died without knowing the cause. No one will.
At the Prime Minister's Mansion**
Crash!
The sound of a cup smashing against the floor echoed through the room.
"How dare Louis speak to him like that!" Madam Felicia, Chloe's mother, spat furiously.
"He is his future father-in-law!"
Her handmaid hurried forward, trying to calm her.
"My lady, please don't stress yourself. I'm sure my lord will do something to put him in his place."
That seemed to calm her somewhat.
Moments later, her husband entered the room.
"How is it?" she demanded immediately. "Did you put him in his place? How can he treat you like that?"
Her anger only grew.
"All because of some new pumpkin girl from the—"
Slap!
The sharp sound silenced the room.
"Finish that word, and I may not be able to save you."
Felicia stared at him in shock, one hand flying to her cheek.
"You slapped me?"
He chuckled darkly.
"It may be more than a slap if Louis ever hears you speak that way. You'd better watch your mouth from now on."
He turned away, then added coldly,
"And perhaps it's time you stopped being delusional."
Felicia frowned.
"Louis won't marry Chloe."
"What?"
Her eyes widened.
"Why won't he?"
"And why will he?" her husband fired back.
Still angry over the humiliation he had suffered at the palace, he turned toward his wife.
"Do you know how he treated me today?"
He gave a bitter, sarcastic laugh.
"Ask me where your daughter is now."
Felicia stared at him, confused.
He didn't wait for her to answer.
"She's in a farmer's house in the North."
"What?"
"For six months, she will live with them."
Felicia sprang to her feet.
"What...?"
The words became trapped in her throat.
Her body suddenly went limp, and she collapsed back into her seat.
Chloe's mother had fainted.
Her husband didn't panic.
"Call the physician," he ordered the handmaid without even looking at her.
Then he walked away.
The strange occurrence at the palace was still vivid in his mind.
How could something like that be a coincidence?
It couldn't be natural.
Are the royal family hiding something from us?
He entered his chamber, still deep in thought.
Then—
An eagle landed on his window rail.
The bird remained there only long enough to drop a carefully wrapped note onto the windowsill before taking flight.
The prime minister froze.
"A mystic bird..."
His eyes widened.
"Oh my God."
He rushed toward the window, watching the strange eagle disappear into the distance.
"This is a mystic bird."
He had completely forgotten the message it had delivered.
Then, suddenly, an ancient voice echoed through the room.
"Check the letter. It will desolve in five minutes. Give your answer to the air in three days."
The prime minister stood completely still.
"And my lord will visit you."
His eyes widened.
The voice continued to echo through the room even as the mystical bird flew miles away, carrying the ancient voice with it.
Then silence returned.
The prime minister slowly turned toward the wrapped letter.
Whatever was inside it...
He knows his answer would change everything..
Did they know what happened in the palace?
