Inside the orphanage.

In the corridor outside the Director's office, Emma sat on a wooden bench with her back perfectly straight, ankles crossed at the hem of her white dress, leather shoes polished to a quiet shine. She looked calm. Composed. The kind of stillness that people noticed and remarked on in children.

But her fingers — the ones curled into the fabric of her skirt, bunching the hem into tight little folds — told a different story.

"And I have to ask — what exactly are you assuming about those people out there? Because from where I'm standing, you saw a group of Black men show up, and the first word out of your mouth was gangsters." He raised an eyebrow. "That's a pretty big assumption to make based on what someone looks like, Director. Isn't it?"

The Director's mouth opened. Closed.

Before he could recover, Rango continued — smoothly, almost casually, like he was making conversation at a barbecue. "And there were women in that group, too. So if you're painting all of them with the same brush, that's not just a racial assumption. That's gender discrimination on top of it." He spread his hands. "Just something to think about."

The Director stared at him. His face cycled through several shades of frustration before settling on something tight and controlled.

"I don't care what you say," he said, turning his body away — deliberately, pointedly, like a man refusing to dignify the conversation with his full attention. "I cannot — and will not — hand a child from this orphanage over to someone like you. End of discussion."

"Oh, come on —"

Ted's voice cut in immediately, sharp and indignant, already halfway out of his seat.

Rango's hand shot out and clamped over Ted's mouth before the bear could finish the sentence. He held Ted's gaze for a second — a single, clear look that said not now — and gave a small shake of his head.

Rango reached into his jacket, pulled out the envelope — cream-colored, heavy stock, sealed with a wax stamp that bore the museum's crest — and set it on the desk in front of the Director with a quiet, deliberate tap.

"I'm guessing you've already done your homework on me," Rango said, his tone shifting back to something easy and reasonable. "Social worker visited the museum. Checked up on my employer. So you probably already know who Carl McPhee is."

"Wait."

The Director held up a hand before Rango could move toward the door. Then he reached into his desk drawer and produced a thick stack of papers — adoption paperwork, transfer documents, the whole bureaucratic machinery of officially handing one human being's care over to another.

He slid them across the desk with a pen.

"Sign these before you leave."

Rango shrugged, took the pen, and got to work. Page after page, line after line, his signature appearing in the same clean, unhesitating scrawl each time.

The last stroke of the pen on the final page felt different from the others. Heavier, somehow. More final.

With that signature, it was official. Emma was his.

Which meant that besides Ted and M3GAN — and now Emma — the household was growing. As for the twenty-three earthbound spirits currently residing in the villa?

Rango had ordered every flavor on the menu. Since the pizzas needed to be made fresh and would take a while, he added a round of milkshakes to tide them over.

He took a long sip of his — chocolate, because he was a simple man with simple needs — and let his gaze drift across the table.

Emma nodded. "Okay."

Rango looked at the cup. Looked at Emma, who was already happily drinking his milkshake like the matter was settled.

He picked up hers, took a sip, and smiled.

Kid's got good instincts, he thought.

He glanced at his watch — the pizzas should be coming out soon — and was just about to flag down the waiter when a sound ripped through the restaurant like a blade through fabric.

A scream. Sharp, sudden, high and raw — the kind that made every head in the room snap up at the same time.

Two people on the far side of the restaurant were on their feet. A man and a woman, both young, both wired tight with adrenaline. And both of them were holding guns.

The man's weapon — a semi-automatic, black, ugly — swept across the room in a wide arc, covering every booth, every table, every exit.

"ROBBERY!" he shouted, his voice cracking with the effort of making it sound dangerous. "Nobody fucking move!"

The woman beside him — blonde, tight jaw, eyes darting — raised her own gun and pointed it directly at the nearest table.

"Any one of you so much as BREATHES wrong," she screamed, "and I will put a bullet in every single one of you! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!"
