Chapter 29 - Chapter 27 – Crossing Shadows

The outer perimeter of the Sun and Moon Academy rose like a quiet mechanical beast resting upon the plains.

Tall metallic walls intertwined with crystalline veins of soul tool formations reflected the pale morning light. Engraved runes pulsed faintly across the surface of the buildings, weaving together countless defensive arrays. From time to time, invisible waves of soul power passed through the air, slow and steady, as if the academy itself were breathing.

Lin Huang stood beneath the shadow of one of the towering pillars, his travel cloak fluttering lightly in the wind. Dust from the road still clung to his boots, reminders of the long journey that had yet to fully settle from his shoulders.

So this is Sun and Moon Academy…

Compared to the Lin Clan grounds, the air here felt sharper. Not hostile—just demanding. The density of soul tools, the constant hum of mechanical arrays, and the distant resonance of moving parts created a subtle pressure on the senses. Even breathing felt heavier, as if the air itself carried weight.

Students moved across the courtyard in small groups. Some carried soul tool components in metal cases, others discussed formation parameters in low voices. The clang of metal echoed faintly from distant workshops, blending with the soft rhythm of footsteps on stone.

Lin Huang straightened his posture unconsciously.

Since completing the transformation of his soul power and condensing his seventh tail, his aura had changed. The restless pressure that once clung to him like a storm cloud had settled into a restrained, dignified presence. It was not aggressive—but difficult to ignore.

A few passing students slowed their steps unconsciously. Some frowned slightly, sensing pressure they could not explain. Others glanced at him, instinctively keeping a respectful distance.

…Still not subtle enough.

Footsteps approached from the corridor leading deeper into the academy.

Xu Tianzhen emerged into the courtyard.

She looked different.

Her cultivation had clearly advanced. The tension that once coiled around her movements had smoothed into something steadier, calmer. Her aura flowed in a controlled rhythm, restrained yet deep, like a river that no longer needed to rush to prove its strength.

Even her gaze had changed. The sharp urgency that once lived in her eyes had softened into quiet determination.

"You came," she said.

Her voice was calm, but the relief beneath it was unmistakable.

Lin Huang smiled faintly.

"I said I would."

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

The distant sounds of the academy—metal striking metal, students murmuring, the low hum of formations—filled the space between them.

"You feel different," Xu Tianzhen said at last.

Lin Huang exhaled softly.

"Less desperate," he replied. "Turns out forcing everything only makes it worse."

Xu Tianzhen's lips curved into a faint smile.

Before their quiet exchange could continue, hurried footsteps echoed across the courtyard.

"Lin Huang!"

Meng Hongchen's voice rang out, bright and energetic.

She jogged over, her hair tied back in a practical style, loose strands framing her face. The moment she stopped in front of him, her soul power flared unconsciously—then she quickly suppressed it.

She had clearly grown stronger.

Her aura was denser than before, her movements more grounded. The impatience that once defined her presence had been tempered by discipline.

"You finally arrived," she said. "Do you have any idea how dull training feels when there's no one to compete with properly?"

Lin Huang chuckled.

"So I was your motivation?"

"Hmph." She crossed her arms, then uncrossed them. "Maybe I just wanted to see whether you'd fall behind."

Her eyes lingered on him for a moment.

"…You look calmer."

"Don't get used to it," Lin Huang replied lightly.

A third figure stood slightly to the side.

Zhang Lexuan watched quietly, her expression gentle. The loneliness that once lingered faintly in her eyes had softened. She carried herself with an unhurried grace, as if she had finally found a rhythm within the academy's pace.

The moment was broken by a subtle disturbance in the air.

The hum of the defensive formations wavered for the briefest heartbeat.

Lin Huang's spiritual sense sharpened instinctively.

Two figures approached along the outer path.

The first was a woman in flowing white robes, emerald-green hair cascading down her back. Her presence was gentle yet profound, carrying the faint scent of medicinal herbs. Her steps were light, nearly soundless.

Beside her walked a silver-haired girl.

The moment Lin Huang saw her, his spiritual sea stirred faintly.

Qiu'er.

Her silver hair shimmered softly beneath the light, her eyes colder than before, yet tinged with quiet fatigue. She looked thinner, lighter, as if she carried less of the world within her body—yet far more within her heart.

She stopped in front of Lin Huang.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Qiu'er inclined her head slightly.

"…It seems we can finally introduce ourselves properly," she said.

"My name is Qiu'er."

Lin Huang returned the gesture.

"Lin Huang."

The emerald-haired woman inclined her head politely.

"My name is Biji. I escorted her here."

Lin Huang bowed in return.

"Thank you for bringing her safely."

Biji's gaze lingered on him, thoughtful.

"You carry the aura of many soul beasts," she said softly. "Yet none of them resent you. That is rare."

Lin Huang smiled faintly.

"I try not to make enemies out of things that can swallow me whole."

Qiu'er looked at him.

"You changed," she said quietly.

"Life doesn't wait," Lin Huang replied.

Xu Tianzhen's eyes lingered on Qiu'er, evaluating, cautious. Then she turned to Lin Huang.

"This girl you brought with you…" she said calmly, vigilance clear beneath her tone.

Qiu'er met her gaze without flinching.

"I didn't come to bring him trouble," she said."But trouble tends to follow him."

Meng Hongchen let out a short breath, clearly displeased.

"Hmph… trouble, girls—either way, you're always surrounded by them," she muttered, casting Lin Huang a sidelong glance.

Zhang Lexuan smiled faintly, her tone light.

"And Su Mei isn't even here yet."

Meng Hongchen snorted softly.

"Right. And when Xiao Hongchen shows up again, I'm sure he'll find a way to stir up even more trouble for you."

Lin Huang rubbed his temple helplessly.

"You're enjoying this too much."

Biji cleared her throat softly.

"She has been wandering for a long time," she said, looking at Qiu'er. "Her body is stable, but her heart is tired."

"I'm fine," Qiu'er replied flatly.

Biji smiled faintly.

"That is what injured children always say."

Lin Huang felt a subtle heaviness in his chest.

"You can rest here for now," he said. "The academy has healers."

Biji nodded.

"I will remain nearby for a while. But do not rely on me too much."

She stepped back, gradually blending into the flow of people. Somewhere deeper within the shadows of the academy grounds, a silent presence watched unseen.

Ziji.

Meng Hongchen glanced at Qiu'er again, then looked away.

"Hmph… you're really collecting people," she muttered.

Lin Huang sighed.

"It's not like that."

The wind brushed across the courtyard.

Old ties tightened.

New threads wove themselves into his path.

Somewhere beyond the borders of the empire, flames raged through a nameless village.

And far along the road between empires.

he road stretched endlessly between the rolling hills and sparse forests. Dust rose under the hooves of their soul tool carriage, mixing with the faint morning mist.

Su Mei's heart beat faster with every step. The second Soul Ring she had absorbed glowed faintly beneath her robe, a warmth that reminded her of her own growth. Finally, she would see Lin Huang again. She imagined his calm expression, the faint smile he always reserved for her, and a subtle excitement fluttered within her chest.

How much stronger has he become since I last saw him? she wondered. And will he notice the changes in me too?

She adjusted the grip on her soul tool, her mind skipping ahead to the moment she would meet him. Every mile seemed shorter with anticipation.

Behind her, Ma Xiaotao sat in the carriage silently, her emerald and scarlet aura coiling like a restrained flame. Her eyes scanned the horizon, the forests, and the distant roads. Every flicker of movement caught her attention, every plume of smoke from the far-off villages raising her caution.

I don't know if I should trust them fully… she thought, glancing at Su Mei. This "Young Master" they speak of… is he truly reliable? Or am I just walking into another trap?

Yet, even with doubt lingering in her chest, she could not help the faint curiosity that pulled her forward. The power and aura of Su Mei intrigued her, and the girl's determination was undeniable.

If this journey can prove something… then I have to see it through. But I will not be careless.

The carriage continued, the hum of soul tool formations beneath it steady, carrying them ever closer to the gates of Sun and Moon Academy. Each of them carried their own thoughts, their own hesitations—and their own hopes—separately, yet moving toward the same destination.
