Chapter 15 - Preparing for Ascension

The announcement of the Ascension Challenge hung over the school like a storm cloud. The days leading up to the trial were tense, with students training harder than ever. The hallways buzzed with whispered strategies and nervous speculation, while the arenas saw an uptick in fierce duels.

Akira, Rika, Kazuki, and Mira made the most of their limited time, splitting their efforts between refining their abilities and gathering information about the challenge.

"Again!" Rika barked, her barrier shimmering as she deflected Akira's flames.

Akira gritted his teeth and swung his fiery blade in a controlled arc. The heat intensified, but Rika's barrier held firm.

"You're pushing too hard," Rika said, lowering the barrier. "Focus on precision, not power. The Ascension Challenge isn't just about brute force it's about adaptability."

Akira sighed, extinguishing the flames. "I get it, but it's hard to hold back when everything about this place is telling you to go all out."

"That's the point," Rika said, crossing her arms. "If you burn through your energy in the first five minutes, you're toast."

Kazuki lounged nearby, watching with a lazy grin. "She's got a point, flame-boy. It's all about pacing. You've got to last longer than the competition—kind of like my fights. Ever seen me lose?"

"Didn't you lose to an A-ranker last month?" Rika quipped, raising an eyebrow.

Kazuki rolled his eyes. "Details."

Mira, who had been silently observing, stepped forward. "The challenge won't just test your stamina. It'll test your mind. I suggest we spend time practicing scenarios—situations where we're outnumbered, outmaneuvered, or betrayed."

The group exchanged uneasy glances at the last word.

"She's right," Akira said, breaking the silence. "The council will throw everything at us. We need to be ready for the unexpected."

Later that evening, Kazuki led the group to a quiet corner of the library. He had promised valuable information about the challenge, and though Rika was skeptical, Akira trusted him—mostly.

Kazuki leaned in, his voice low. "So here's the deal: I've been asking around, and it sounds like this year's challenge is going to be different. They're calling it The Rift Trial."

Mira frowned. "The Rift Trial? That's new."

"Yeah," Kazuki said, electricity flickering at his fingertips. "Word is, they're upping the stakes. The trial will take place in an unstable zone—one where the boundary between dimensions is thin."

Akira's chest tightened. "Thin? You mean like the boundary we saw in the vault?"

Kazuki nodded grimly. "Exactly. The council's probably using the trial as an excuse to test how much power the students can generate. They'll throw us into the chaos and see who survives."

Rika shook her head, her expression dark. "That's insane. If the boundary is unstable, it could collapse."

"Which is why we need to be ready," Kazuki said. "The trial won't just be about beating the other teams. It'll be about surviving whatever the boundary throws at us."

The night before the challenge, the four of them gathered in Akira's room, their expressions tense but determined.

"Alright," Akira said, spreading a crude map of the trial arena across the table. "Here's what we know: the trial will take place in a Rift Zone. The council will probably set up objectives to force us into dangerous areas, and we'll be competing against other teams for control of the zone."

Rika nodded. "That means we need to stick together. No splitting up unless it's absolutely necessary."

"Agreed," Mira said. "We'll also need to watch for ambushes. Some teams will be out for blood."

Kazuki grinned. "And some of us are good at giving them what they want. I'll keep the hotheads busy."

Akira smirked. "Just don't get yourself killed."

"No promises," Kazuki said, winking.

Rika groaned. "This is going to be a disaster."

"Maybe," Akira said, his flames flickering faintly around his hands. "But it's a disaster we're going to face together."

The school's massive stadium was packed with students and faculty, the air electric with anticipation. Holographic displays floated above the arena, showing an aerial view of the Rift Zone a jagged, chaotic landscape filled with glowing fissures and unstable energy fields.

The headmaster's voice boomed over the crowd. "Welcome to the Ascension Challenge. Today, you will prove your worth in the Rift Trial. Only the strongest, the smartest, and the most adaptable will advance."

Akira stood with his team at the edge of the arena, his heart pounding. Around them, dozens of other teams were preparing, their sigils glowing faintly in the morning light.

"Stay sharp," Mira said, her eyes scanning the competition. "Some of these teams have been planning for weeks."

"Let them plan," Kazuki said, cracking his knuckles. "We've got something they don't: me."

"And humility," Rika muttered, rolling her eyes.

Akira couldn't help but grin despite the tension. "Alright, team. Let's show them what we're made of."

The headmaster raised his hand, and the crowd fell silent.

"Let the trial… begin!"

A deafening horn sounded, and the teams surged into the Rift Zone, their Sigils flaring to life as the battle for ascension began.
