Chapter 2 - The Ranking System

The obsidian magnified the massive auditorium drinking in the dim light from above. A slight chatter could be heard above the humming of the corded microphone. At the front of the room, a raised platform held a single podium, behind which a larger-than-life screen displayed an animated rendering of the ranking system.

Akira sat near the back with Rika, his knee bouncing as he scanned the crowd. He couldn't help but notice the sharp contrast in uniforms. Some students looked like they'd just stepped out of a catalog, while others, mostly D-rankers like him, wore frayed cuffs and faded colors.

The murmurs around them died as the headmaster strode onto the stage.

The imposing gentleman had piercing eyes and face carved of stone that seemed gaze in to the soul of every student present. His bearing alone stilled the room. His voice was that of a steel hammer resonating off the walls like thunder.

"Welcome to Chaos Realm High School," he began, his tone cold as ice. "Here, we shape the extraordinary. We separate the strong from the weak, the capable from the incapable. You are not here to be coddled. You are here to prove your worth."

The screen behind him flickered, displaying the four tiers: D, C, B, and A.

"Our ranking system is the building block of our institution. All of you are student from across Japan. Survival is dependent on your actions. Privileges and opportunities will show themselves on your journey. The pinnacle is our, A-rank students who enjoy prestige and power. They have the right to graduate one achieving that rank. Those of you who are bottom feeders…"

The screen homed in on the D-rank students, where names fluttered like dying embers.

"Failure."

Akira swallowed hard.

"Rankings are earned through challenges, duels, and contributions to the school. Each of you possesses a unique ability, called your Sigil. These abilities are the key to your advancement or your demise."

The headmaster's eyes swept the room, pausing briefly on Akira. A chill ran down his spine.

"Your first challenge is tomorrow. You will be given the chance to prove your strength. Fail, and your descent into irrelevance will be swift. Succeed, and you may rise."

With that, the headmaster stepped back, and a holographic projection of the school grounds appeared. The labyrinthine corridors Akira had stumbled through earlier were part of a sprawling complex that seemed impossible to navigate.

"The arena will test you. Prepare yourselves! The area will force you to adapt and survive."

The screen faded to black. The piercing eyes of the headmaster lingered towards the students before making his way off stage.

A cacophony of voices ranging from fear, determination, and excitement filled the arena.

Rika leaned closer to Akira. "Well, that was uplifting," she said with a wry grin.

Akira shook his head. "What's a Sigil? They talked about it like I should already know."

Rika's smile faltered. "Right, you're new." She glanced around, then lowered her voice. "A Sigil is your power. Everyone here has one, though no two are alike. Some people can summon weapons, others can control elements, and some… well, let's just say the possibilities are endless."

Akira frowned. "What about you?"

Rika dawdled, then slowly held up her hand. A faint glimmer manifested in the air around her fingers, forming a pellucid sphere. "I came up with the name Phantom Edge. When in trouble I can create temporary barriers. Not the fanciest ability, but it comes in handy when needed."

"Don't be down on yourself. That sounds useful," Akira stated, an encouraging tone to his voice.

Rika shrugged. "It's nothing compared to the A-rank Sigils. They're insane. Rumor has it one of them can bend time itself."

Akira's stomach churned. "And what about me? How do I find out what my Sigil is?"

"You'll figure it out in the arena tomorrow," Rika said, clapping him on the shoulder. "Trust me, nothing awakens a Sigil like the threat of getting your butt kicked."

Akira wasn't reassured.

The next morning, Akira woke in his dingy dorm room, the metallic taste of anxiety lingering in his mouth. He didn't sleep well. The headmaster words were a bit daunting. Where are we? Why are there high school kids all over Japan here? Do the police know about this?

Slipping on his uniform he made his way out of the door room in the gray painted hallways. When the bell rang, signaling the start of the challenge, Akira followed a stream of students toward the arena. The massive structure loomed ahead, its gates wide open like the jaws of a beast.

Inside, the biome was a unique blend of semi natural terrain and man constructed obstacles. Rough stone bulged out of the ground, surrounded by pools of a shimmering substance. Floating platforms hovered in the air, and narrow bridges spanned treacherous gaps.

The D-rank students were herded into a starting zone, their expressions ranging from nervous to grim. Rika appeared at Akira's side, offering a small smile.

"Remember," she stated, "this is survival. Stay with me, and we can face any challenge."

Akira stood speechless trying to formulate a response. Before he could, an echoing voice swept over the arena.

"The D-rank challenge now!"

The blaring of the horn invited chaos.. Students dispersed in various directions, some standing confused while others went for the high ground. Those who were thirsty with power engaged with other students dueling immediately.

What the hell is going on! This is utter madness. Rika said to keep close so I need to focus on keeping near her. Wait who's that? Akira's eyes met with a wiry young man with a cruel demeanor holding a brilliant blue spear in his hands.

"Would you look at this," the boy chuckled. "My first victim."

Victim! People are killing each other!? I need to lower my heart rate. The panic is setting in. This is madness. There's no time. Instinctively he raised his hands, bracing for the worst. The spear was a moments away from piercing his chest as something stirred in his spirit. A warmth spread through his chest, growing hotter and hotter until it felt like his veins were on fire.

The air around him shimmered, and suddenly, a glowing symbol etched itself in the space before him. The boy's smirk vanished, replaced by wide-eyed shock.

"No way," he whispered. "That's… that's a legendary Sigil!"

Akira didn't know what was happening, but his body moved on instinct. Flames burst from the floating symbol, fusing into a massive blade.

Wrapping his hand around the hilt of the fiery weapon, Akira swung on instinct.

The once cocky boy stumbled backwards his spear clanging on the ground. Filled with terror he push his hand on the ground and bolted.

Akira glared at the blade sitting in his hands, the flames flickering around his skin but leaving no scars.

"Akira!" Rika's voice broke through his trace. She jumped beside him almost losing her balance, her eyes wide in awe. "What in the world?"

"I… don't ask me," Akira professed, his heart skipping a beat.

Rika smirked, a mix of excitement and awe lighting up her cheeks. "Whatever this is you are on fire right now. Let's make use of it."
