Chapter 54: Rebranding the Brotherhood; Danzo's Challenge

Hiruzen and the Sannin turned in unison.

Asuma instinctively leaned back, but the thick scroll tucked into his waistband protruded sharply through his shirt. The hard edge of the parchment was so obvious it might as well have had a neon sign pointing at it.

"Hahahaha!"

Jiraiya erupted into a fit of shameless laughter. "Caught you, kid! Hiding books under your shirt? At your age? You shouldn't be looking at 'Adult Literature' yet, you know. It'll stunt your growth!"

"Hand it over. I'm confiscating it for... research. I must personally analyze these 'corrupting' materials for the good of your soul!"

As the saying goes: If I had to suffer through the rain, I'm taking everyone else's umbrella too. When Jiraiya was a boy, Hiruzen had caught him with similar materials, resulting in a legendary level of public embarrassment. Jiraiya was eager to pass the trauma down.

Tsunade arched an eyebrow. "Asuma-kun, you should learn from me or Orochimaru. Studying under Jiraiya is a one-way ticket to being a perverted failure."

Hiruzen's face darkened. "I'd rather he didn't learn from any of you, frankly."

Between a gambling addict and a forbidden jutsu obsessive, the Sarutobi line was in enough trouble. If anyone else had the Sannin's hobbies without their god-tier talent, they'd be in prison or a gutter within a week.

As for Asuma, Hiruzen's expectations were modest. He just wanted a well-behaved "Kage-son" who didn't start a rebellion. If the boy could use his status to boost Hiruzen's popularity with the younger generation, that was a win.

"What are you bringing to school, Asuma?" Hiruzen asked, beckoning him over. "Why the cloak and dagger routine?"

Asuma shuffled forward, looking like a condemned man.

Jiraiya smirked and flicked his wrist, snatching the scroll with a shinobi's speed. "Justice time! Let's see what—"

Jiraiya's face went blank. He unrolled the first few inches and stared.

On the cover, in bold, formal calligraphy, were the words: Sovereign Fire Style: Sarutobi Clan Fundamentals.

"Wait... what's wrong with you, kid?" Jiraiya stammered, his face turning a bright shade of red. "Why are you sneaking around like a thief just to carry a textbook?!"

"The mind is a mirror," Orochimaru chuckled. "Jiraiya, you only saw 'filth' because that's all your head contains. I knew Asuma wasn't like you."

"But truly," Orochimaru added, his eyes narrowing, "where exactly are you taking a clan heirloom, Asuma-kun?"

Asuma's heart sank. He realized he couldn't hide it anymore. He looked at his father and decided to come clean.

"Dad... my friends and I at the Academy formed a... a Brotherhood. We made a pact to bring secret scrolls from our families so we could all train together and improve as a unit."

Jiraiya nearly choked on his breakfast. Tsunade burst out laughing.

A schoolyard gang? they thought. The Hokage's son is a Triad boss.

"Asuma," Jiraiya said, adopting a mock-serious tone and imitating Danzo's gravelly voice. "This is factionalism! You're building a 'mountain' within the Academy! Are you trying to stage a coup against the Hokage? Are you the anti-Kage?!"

Hiruzen caught Jiraiya's eye and gave a small, warning cough. Jiraiya immediately corrected himself: "Well, I mean... your dad isn't that old yet!"

Hiruzen looked much like a man in his prime now, radiating a youthful strength that made the "Old Man" title feel inaccurate.

Asuma looked completely bewildered. "Wait... a coup against my own dad?"

The sheer confusion on the boy's face made the table roar with laughter.

In reality, if it hadn't been the Hokage's son leading it, the Academy teachers would have crushed the Azure Dragon Brotherhood within twenty-four hours and forced every member to write a public apology. Faring clan secrets was a massive taboo.

But because it was Asuma, it was "Student Collaboration."

"Asuma, I'm not angry," Hiruzen said, his voice calm and instructional. "But you need to understand the responsibility here."

"First: safety. Mutual training is good, but high-level jutsu can be lethal if used incorrectly. If you run into a technique you don't understand, you must ask an adult. No experimenting with S-rank jutsus behind the gym."

"Second: security. You need a formal charter. You have to report your activities to the Academy staff."

"And third: inclusivity." Hiruzen leaned forward, smiling. "Don't just keep the secrets among your elite circle. Use what you learn to help the students who are struggling. The best way to master a jutsu is to teach it to someone else."

As Hokage, Arata knew that "Soft Power" starts at the bottom. By allowing this "Gang" to exist, he was effectively merging the clan heirs of the next generation into a single unified front loyal to his son.

"I understand, Dad! I won't let you down!"

"We're going to be so strong that Minato-sensei won't know what hit him!" Asuma cheered, before sprinting out the door toward school.

"Minato-sensei?" Jiraiya asked, confused.

"Kakashi told us Minato-san is coming to the Academy to 'check' our progress," Asuma called back over his shoulder.

Jiraiya chuckled. "Good luck with that. They're going to need it."

He had absolute faith in his student. If those kids could land a scratch on Minato, Konoha's future would be brighter than the sun.

"Jiraiya," Hiruzen said, once Asuma was gone. "Take Minato to the archives. Give him the application for the Flying Raijin."

"What?!" Jiraiya froze. "Are you serious, Sensei? That's the Second's masterwork!"

"I saw the kid's talent during the audit. He's ready. It has nothing to do with Asuma's little gang," Hiruzen said firmly.

"But Asuma's 'Brotherhood' name is a bit too edgy for a government school. Tell Minato to help them rebrand. Call it a 'Junior Research and Tactics Group.'"

Jiraiya sighed. Poor Asuma. You think you're a rebel, but your dad just turned your gang into a PTA meeting.

"And Jiraiya... if you're bored, spend some time at the Academy. Keep an eye on those kids. Make sure they don't blow themselves up."

"Also, I want you to give Minato some confidence. Tell him he's doing well."

"Sure, sure," Jiraiya agreed. "I don't have many missions lately anyway. I was planning on focusing on my writing."

"About that..." Hiruzen's eyes glinted. "Come see me in a few days. I have a few 'story outlines' that I think would be very popular in the capital."

Jiraiya rolled his eyes. "Since when do you know how to write romance, Sensei?"

Arata smirked. He didn't know how to write a classic romance, but he knew how to copy. He had the plots of The Legend of the White Snake and The Butterfly Lovers in his head. A little magical realism, a little tragedy, and some heavy-handed product placement for the "Sage Vitality Pills," and he'd have the Land of Fire's nobility begging for more.

"I have my ways," Hiruzen said.

He was also thinking about Minato. The kid was too fast for his own age group. He needed a rival—someone who could push him the way Danzo pushed Hiruzen.

Hiruzen's mind drifted to the secret vault.

If I can perfect that 'Uchiha vessel' for Master Tobirama... he would be the perfect sparring partner for Minato. Two geniuses of space-time, training together across generations. That would be a sight to see.

The Next Day. The Hokage Office.

Hiruzen was reviewing the morning's reports when the door was pushed open.

Danzo Shimura strode in, looking more determined than he had in years. He didn't wait for a greeting. He didn't bring any paperwork.

"Hiruzen," Danzo said, his voice sharp. "We haven't crossed blades in a long time."

"Let's head to the training grounds. I want to see if that Lightning Mode of yours is all show, or if you can actually keep up with me."
